Chapter 46: Forever fall
Penny was now alone, as she sigehd as her left eye glows red again. "Yes I know you said this plan wouldn't work, but I had to try". She then stopped as she spoke. "Again I am not obsessed with him".
Penny stood there, her breath steadying as her red eye flickered once more, the glow intensifying slightly. She closed her eyes, as if trying to regain control of herself. The words she had spoken echoed in her mind, and she couldn't help but feel a twinge of uncertainty. It wasn't like her to get caught up in these kinds of thoughts, but something about Oscar — his calm demeanor, the way he always seemed to know what was going on — had left an impression on her.
"I'm not obsessed," she muttered again, this time with more conviction. "I'm just... trying to understand him. I have to. He's different from everyone else, and I need to know why."
Penny's mind wandered back to the moment earlier when Oscar had caught her, his words a mix of concern and curiosity. She hadn't expected him to be so... perceptive. It was almost like he could see through her layers, her walls, and it made her uncomfortable in a way she hadn't anticipated.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a low hum, a flicker of energy in the air that only she seemed to notice. She reached for her communicator, her fingers brushing over it lightly, and a voice crackled through.
"Penny, are you alright?" It was her handler, the one who had always kept tabs on her during missions.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus. "Yes, I'm fine," she replied. "Just... reflecting."
"Reflecting? On what?" the voice asked, a hint of suspicion creeping through.
Penny hesitated, glancing around the empty dock. "On the mission. And... on White Mask. He's more than just a vigilante. There's something about him."
There was a long pause on the other end. "You've been tracking him for a while now. We've all noticed. You've been obsessing over him."
"I'm not obsessed!" Penny's voice cracked just a little, and she immediately regretted raising it. She took a deep breath, steadying herself. "I'm just trying to understand him."
The voice on the other end let out a sigh, but it was laced with concern. "Penny, you're getting too close to this. You're becoming emotionally attached to him, and that's dangerous. You know better than anyone how personal feelings can get in the way of our work."
Penny's hand clenched around the communicator, but her resolve hardened. "I know the risks. But I need to know what drives him. There's more to him than just a mask and shadows. Something about him resonates with me. I can't explain it, but I have to find out."
Another long pause followed, and Penny could almost feel the tension through the line. "Just be careful. You're walking a fine line, Penny. If you get too close, you might end up on the wrong side."
"I won't," she said, her voice steady once again. "But I'm not giving up on this."
With that, the line went silent, and Penny was left alone once again, the sounds of the night and the gentle hum of machinery filling the space around her.
Her red eye flickered once more, the glow fading into a soft shimmer. She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding, staring into the distance as her thoughts swirled. She wasn't obsessed, she reminded herself. She was just... curious. After all, curiosity was part of who she was, wasn't it?
Still, as the night carried on, she couldn't help but wonder if she was getting too close to something she wasn't ready for. Something that might change everything.
For now, she would focus on her mission. But somewhere deep inside, she knew she couldn't let go of the mystery that was White Mask. Not yet.
Oscar walked through the red tree of Forever fall, it has been 30 minutes sense the whole class had arrived to this place, they were being guided by Miss Glynda Good Witch.
Glynda stopped and looked at them. "You assistant me is simple, each you will split up with your partner's and collecte sap from the trees, they look like this".
Glynda lipted a container that had red honey looking things. "Do be careful they are Grimms here, but we have next there is only Streeth Level grimms in this forest".
Ren then spoke. "So E rank Grimm basically".
Glynda nodes. "Exactly".
Yang then spoked. "So um quick question, what about me, I don't have partner".
Glynda fixed her glasses as she spoke. "You will Xaio Long, will he going with Mr Pine and Miss Belladonna, you 3 will make a trio Beacon first Trio actually seeing that you don't have partner, we would have don't this earlier but paperwork sucks".
Oscar listened as Miss Glynda explained the plan. It seemed simple enough—gather sap from the trees in Forever Fall, stay alert for Grimm, and stay in pairs or groups. However, the mention of Grimm made him tense up. E-rank Grimm were still dangerous if not handled properly. The fact that they were in a trio now, with Yang, made him feel a bit uneasy. He hadn't had a lot of direct interactions with her beyond team dynamics and, honestly, didn't know what to expect from her when they weren't in a formal setting.
Yang, seemingly unfazed by the situation, flashed a smile. "Alright, a trio it is! Just don't slow me down!" she teased, cracking her knuckles.
Blake, who was already walking ahead with Ren, turned to glance at Oscar, her eyes briefly meeting his. "Stick close, Oscar. We'll need to cover more ground together."
Oscar nodded. "Got it. I won't let you down."
They began walking deeper into the forest. The crimson trees of Forever Fall towered above them, their leaves like vibrant red flames flickering in the wind. The air was cool but thick with the scent of the forest, and Oscar couldn't help but admire the eerie beauty of the place.
Yang took point, leading the way. Her ever-present confidence made Oscar feel somewhat reassured. "This is the perfect spot for a camping trip, don't you think?" she said, looking around with a grin.
Blake, always more serious, kept a sharp eye on their surroundings. "Just don't forget why we're here. We're collecting sap, not sightseeing."
Oscar took a deep breath, steadying his thoughts. He was still adjusting to the whole "being a hunter" thing, but this was part of the experience. He had to get used to working with his team and proving himself.
As they ventured further into the forest, Blake spoke again. "Oscar, keep an eye on the sap. Some trees can look similar, but they're not always safe to harvest from."
Oscar nodded, his gaze shifting from the trees to their surroundings. Suddenly, he heard a rustling sound from behind a tree nearby.
Before he could react, Yang was already charging forward. "I got this!" she yelled, and with a swift punch, she sent a small Grimm flying from the underbrush.
The creature, a Beowolf, stumbled and snarled, but it was already down, no match for Yang's power.
"Nice," Oscar muttered, impressed by her speed.
Yang smirked as she wiped her hand on her jacket. "Just a little warm-up. Now, let's focus on the sap."
Blake walked past them, her expression neutral. "Keep your guard up. There could be more."
Oscar followed, staying alert. He felt like the whole forest was watching them. The trees swayed gently, but in the quiet of the forest, he could hear the slightest crack of branches in the distance. Grimm weren't the only danger in places like this.
After a few minutes of walking, they arrived at one of the sap-producing trees. The tree's bark had a slightly different hue, a darker red shade, and it exuded a thick, syrupy substance.
"This is the one," Blake said, kneeling down to collect the sap carefully. "We need to be precise with this."
Oscar bent down, carefully following Blake's movements. He looked around for any signs of movement, staying on high alert. Yang, as always, seemed perfectly relaxed despite the tension in the air.
Oscar couldn't help but notice the way the trio worked together, even with some of them being so different. Blake, quiet but always calculating. Yang, brimming with energy and fearlessness. Oscar, still figuring out his place, but doing his best.
Just as they filled their containers, a low growl echoed from the trees. Oscar's senses sharpened instantly. He looked around, eyes scanning for any signs of movement.
A second Beowolf lunged from the shadows, its teeth bared and glowing red. Without missing a beat, Yang charged forward, her fists flying. Blake followed closely, using her agility to sidestep and strike with precision.
Oscar stepped back, watching their teamwork. This was what being a hunter was about—working in harmony, protecting each other, and handling threats quickly.
With a final blow from Yang, the Beowolf crumpled to the ground, defeated. The forest fell silent again.
Yang wiped her brow and turned to Oscar with a grin. "See? Told you I'd take care of it."
Blake shook her head, but there was a small smile on her face. "Let's just focus on finishing this. We still have to gather enough sap."
Oscar nodded, feeling a bit more confident. He was part of this team, and they were going to get the job done—together.
As they continued to gather sap from the trees, Oscar couldn't help but think about what Glynda had said earlier. "Street-level Grimm," she had called them. He had never seen a Beowolf up close before, but now he understood the importance of staying sharp. Even "simple" Grimm could become a real threat if you weren't careful.
They continued onward, their trio strong and focused, unaware of the greater challenges that lay ahead in the depths of Forever Fall.
Yang then stabbed a tree, as they say the leafs move. "What?"
Ding!
[Blood lust detected]
Oscar saw the Notification, as he actived his [Agility Skill] he ran then grabbed Yang arms, as he moved her away as he tree then moved as it caen to like it now resembling a slender brown tree. Its shadowy black body is visible through gaps in the tree, and a single, red eye is visible through a hole near the top.
Oscar saw his system
[Name: Trevenant
Level: 20
Rank: D
Description: This Grimm looks like tree, to lore unspective people to be eaten or killed ]
Blake pulled out her own weapon and then her Ice Dager, Yang then ready her gauntlet, but the they saw green blur as they saw Oscar stabbed his Midnight Fang into the eyes the Grimm screamed as Oscar cut the arm and used Crimson Tiger to blast the tree, his shot gun making holes in the trees Grimm, as then Oscar uses [Fire Ball] as he burned the Grimm to dust, as the Grimm maded away.
Ding!
[Skill Fire Ball has been level up
Fire ball level - 10]
Ding!
[Host has leveled up 40 - 41]
Yang just looked at him as she spoke. "I mean you did take done Nevermore on our first day in beacon".
Oscar remeber the first day. "I would say that was a team effort of Me, Ruby, Weiss, You and Blake".
Yang gave a playful grin, adjusting her gauntlets as she looked over at Oscar. "Yeah, but you were the one who dealt the final blow. It's kinda hard to forget that, especially with how epic it was." Her voice was filled with admiration, but also the casual confidence that came with being in the field.
Blake, who had been observing Oscar's swift actions, nodded in approval. "You're improving. That was quick thinking with your Fire Ball. And the way you handled that Grimm... you're definitely getting more comfortable with your abilities."
Oscar couldn't help but feel a sense of pride, but he was careful not to let it show too much. He was still new to all of this, after all, and the fight with the Trevenant had been intense. The notifications from his system only reaffirmed that he was growing stronger.
"Yeah, but I still need to work on controlling my powers," Oscar said, shaking his head slightly as he adjusted his grip on Midnight Fang. "I'm getting the hang of things, but I can't let my guard down."
Yang chuckled and patted him on the back. "Don't worry, you're doing great. And you've got us to back you up if you mess up." She then turned to Blake. "Hey, we still need to get that sap, right? We should focus."
Blake nodded, though her expression remained serious. "Right. We can't afford to get distracted. We still don't know if more Grimm will show up. Let's stay sharp."
Oscar took a deep breath, his mind focused. Despite the adrenaline from the fight, he knew they had a job to do. Collecting the sap from the trees was important, but so was keeping the area safe. As he continued walking through the forest with his teammates, his senses were on high alert, and he couldn't help but feel like they were being watched. It wasn't just the Grimm; there was something else in the air.
Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled slightly. The air grew thick, and the trees around them swayed with unnatural force.
"What was that?" Oscar muttered, eyes darting from tree to tree.
Before Blake or Yang could answer, the shadows of the trees seemed to stretch and twist. They looked around, but nothing was moving—yet the eerie sensation of being surrounded by something unseen was palpable. Oscar's heart raced.
"Stay close," Blake whispered, her grip tightening around her weapons.
Oscar could feel the heat of his Fire Ball skill bubbling just beneath the surface, ready to be unleashed if needed. His eyes scanned the trees, watching every subtle movement.
Yang stepped forward. "Alright, we've fought Grimm, but something's off. This doesn't feel like just some random attack."
Blake agreed, her voice cold and sharp. "This feels... deliberate."
Then, from behind one of the trees, another Trevenant appeared. But this one was larger—its red eye glowing fiercely as it twisted its body and stretched upward, its bark-like skin cracking and breaking as it stepped into view.
It wasn't alone.
More Trevenants began emerging from the shadows of the trees, their limbs shifting and growing as their forms solidified in front of the trio. It was a trap.
Oscar quickly assessed the situation. He felt his heart beat faster, adrenaline surging through his veins. His instincts screamed that they needed to act fast.
"Blake, Yang, we're surrounded!" Oscar shouted, his hand already moving to his weapon. "We need to fall back and regroup!"
Yang immediately took her position, her gauntlets crackling with energy as she got into a fighting stance. "No way! I've been looking for a fight all day!" she shouted, her confidence unwavering.
Blake, ever the strategist, didn't hesitate. "Fine, we'll fight. But we need to make sure we don't get overwhelmed. Oscar, can you keep up with these things?"
Oscar gave a nod, his hand steady as he readied his Midnight Fang. "I'll do my best."
The first Trevenant lunged at them, its wooden limbs crashing down with incredible force. Oscar leaped to the side, narrowly dodging the swing. He didn't hesitate and thrust his Midnight Fang toward the Grimm's glowing red eye. The sharp blade met its target, but the Grimm's bark-like exterior proved tougher than expected. Still, it staggered back, and Oscar pressed his advantage.
Yang, laughing with excitement, charged forward and slammed her fists into one of the Trevenants, her explosive attacks causing pieces of its wooden body to splinter. "I'm just getting started!" she yelled, clearly enjoying herself.
Blake remained calm, her ice daggers flashing as she slashed at the Grimm's limbs, freezing them in place. With quick precision, she disabled one Trevenant's movement, giving Yang and Oscar an opening to attack.
Oscar focused on using his [Fire Ball], launching it at one of the larger Trevenants. The ball of flame exploded upon impact, sending chunks of bark and wood flying as the Grimm howled in agony. But there were too many of them. As the flames died down, the remaining Trevenants pressed forward, determined to overwhelm the trio.
"We need to take these things out fast!" Oscar yelled, his voice strained from the effort. "Otherwise, we'll be overrun!"
The trio continued to fight, the battle intense and chaotic. The forest around them seemed to come alive, the trees swaying ominously as the Trevenants attacked with a relentless ferocity. It felt as though the entire forest was conspiring against them.
Oscar's [Fire Ball] leveled up again, and with a focused effort, he released a much stronger blast, cutting down two of the Trevenants at once. Yang's fists landed powerful blows, and Blake's ice daggers continued to freeze their opponents in place, leaving them vulnerable to Oscar's attacks.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the last Trevenant fell, crumbling into a heap of splintered wood and ash.
Oscar was breathing heavily, sweat beading on his forehead. "Is that all of them?"
Blake, just as tired, scanned the area, her eyes still sharp. "I think so... for now."
Yang wiped her brow, clearly satisfied. "That was fun! But we better get back to work before more of them show up."
Oscar nodded, his mind still racing. He had survived another battle, but he was beginning to realize just how dangerous this world really was. Despite his growing strength, there was always a bigger challenge waiting around the corner.
As they resumed their task of collecting sap, Oscar couldn't shake the feeling that something even more dangerous was lurking just beyond the trees.
