Chapter 15: Commoner Ninjas Rising
What can a commoner ninja achieve? Orochimaru and Jiraiya understood this question well. Both were born as commoners and later rose to become two of the legendary Sannin of Konoha. In front of Uchiha Tatsumi stood another example—Namikaze Minato.
Minato's parents had died early, and neither were ninjas. He joined the Academy by chance and had no prior knowledge of ninja skills. Minato had always been groping and exercising by himself. The Academy was only responsible for teaching the Three-Style Jutsu, along with theoretical knowledge of ninja techniques, basic Taijutsu, shuriken, and physical strength training. High-Rank Ninjutsu was not part of the curriculum. This often put commoner ninjas at a disadvantage compared to clan ninjas during their student years.
However, Namikaze Minato shattered this notion. In the class, his strength was only surpassed by Uchiha Tatsumi and Nawaki. Now, he stood facing a child of the Sarutobi Clan.
With a swift movement, Minato's right hand drew several shuriken, throwing them at Sarutobi from tricky angles. Without wasting a moment, Minato rushed towards his opponent. As Sarutobi dodged, Minato threw more shuriken, forcing Sarutobi to substitute with a log midair.
Bang.
Undeterred, Minato stopped suddenly and punched behind him. Sure enough, Sarutobi's targeted attack had arrived. Minato's fist connected with Sarutobi's face, but Sarutobi leaned back slightly, evading a direct hit. Taking advantage of the opening, Minato threw his kunai at Sarutobi, forcing him to retreat.
Sarutobi looked solemnly at Minato, realizing that this commoner ninja was proving to be a formidable opponent.
"Huh!"
In an instant, Minato and Sarutobi clashed again. The sound of kunai colliding echoed through the air as their silhouettes flashed rapidly, neither giving an inch. Jiraiya, watching from the audience, showed a surprised expression, clearly impressed by Minato's skill.
Finally, Minato, riddled with scars, stepped off the field, while Sarutobi lay unconscious on the stage.
"Not bad, not bad. You did well," Jiraiya praised, patting Minato on the shoulder, clearly optimistic about his potential. "Let's get you to Tsunade for treatment. You might feel a bit unsteady."
"Okay, thank you, Lord Jiraiya," Minato replied, grateful.
The next two games were uneventful. Soon, it was Uchiha Tatsumi's turn on the fourth stage.
"Tatsumi, keep it up!" Mikoto cheered, her clenched fists and cute expression showing her support.
"I know," Tatsumi replied with a hearty smile.
He shook his Uchiha brand windbreaker slightly, causing a loud cheer from the surrounding crowd.
"Tatsumi, you're so handsome!"
"I like you so much!"
The screams were endless. Jiraiya looked around at the screaming girls and curled his lip.
"This is far worse than my popularity during childhood," he muttered.
"…"
Tatsumi, who had wandered onto the stage, snapped his fingers lightly. A feather appeared on the platform. His opponent, staring at the feather, suddenly froze, then slowly fell asleep on the ground.
Tatsumi had easily defeated his opponent. Cheers erupted from the audience once more.
Jiraiya stared wide-eyed. "This Uchiha kid is not simple."
The Genjutsu Tatsumi used was called Feather Sleep. Unlike the technique of Nirvana Abode, which dropped a large area of phantom-like feathers to put enemies to sleep, Feather Sleep was a single-target Genjutsu. This technique was related to the user's Chakra Reserves and spiritual energy. The larger the Chakra output, the longer the target would sleep. This technique was sufficient to deal with a second-year student.
Although Tatsumi couldn't perform more profound Genjutsu yet, he could easily launch Genjutsu through sound or motion. This made it difficult for opponents to guard against his attacks.
Compared to Minato's injuries, Uchiha Tatsumi appeared much more composed and stylish.
"Tatsumi, are you okay?" Mikoto ran to him, her concern evident.
"It's nothing, really," Tatsumi replied, patting Mikoto's head affectionately.
This public display of affection caused a stir among the onlookers. Jiraiya felt as if he had received a critical hit, roaring internally as a single dog.
"Why…why," Jiraiya roared towards the sky, silently asking the heavens. "What did I do wrong?"
"Now kids can publicly show love like this, and I'm already a Jonin, yet I haven't found a girlfriend. Why won't Tsunade agree to my dating requests?"
Uchiha Tatsumi's mischievous side from his previous life emerged, and he suddenly wanted to tease Jiraiya.
"Lord Jiraiya, Lord Jiraiya," Tatsumi called, motioning for him to come closer. "Want to know how to chase Lady Tsunade?"
Tatsumi put on a serious face, preparing to spin a tale for the eager Jiraiya.
"Yes, yes, is there a way? Hurry up and tell me…" Jiraiya leaned in, his curiosity piqued.
"I have a trick that works. Now, go to Lady Tsunade, grab her hand, push her to the corner, and kiss her directly," Tatsumi advised, his tone confident.
"Follow my method. While she may not change her relationship with you immediately, she'll definitely understand your intentions. The relationship will improve gradually. What you lack is just an opportunity."
"Will she hit me?" Jiraiya asked, his fear of Tsunade's violent tendencies evident.
"Lord Jiraiya, to be honest, I've always had the impression that 'Lord Jiraiya is afraid of Lady Tsunade.' No, you really aren't scared, are you?"
"Uchiha student, you're so wrong about this. If you think so, I'll be disappointed in you. You might earn another nickname: 'Idiot.' Tsunade always listens to me during missions. If you don't believe me, ask Orochimaru," Jiraiya boasted, trying to sound confident.
"Is it really useful?" Jiraiya's uncertainty lingered.
"Of course it's true. Think about it: if you take Lady Tsunade's first kiss, how could she not react? The first time will always be memorable," Tatsumi said, flashing a knowing smile.
"Okay, okay, I understood." Jiraiya nodded vigorously. "If this method works, even if you don't make the top three, I'll give you personal guidance, little demon!"
"Hehe," Tatsumi chuckled ambiguously, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
"Tatsumi, you shouldn't joke about such things," Mikoto scolded gently.
"It's okay. After all, for a single dog who hasn't found a girlfriend for almost twenty years, it's good to share some life experience," Tatsumi teased.
"…Stop talking, I have to take my turn now," Mikoto said, her face turning bright red as she pushed Tatsumi playfully and ran onto the stage.
"Keep it up," Tatsumi encouraged.
As for Jiraiya, he had been beaten by Tsunade more than once or twice. It wouldn't make much difference this time, right?
"Tatsumi, what are you thinking about?" Minato asked, having returned after being healed by Tsunade. Tsunade's medical skills were impressive, and Minato, who had been seriously injured moments ago, had almost fully recovered, save for a few bandages on his face.
"Nothing much. Minato, is your injury healed?" Tatsumi inquired.
"Lady Tsunade healed me," Minato replied with a smile. "She said the wound on my face wasn't deep, so a few bandages would suffice. She also mentioned it might attract the girls' attention."
She's just being lazy, Minato. She healed your major injuries but couldn't be bothered with the small ones, Tatsumi thought, curling his lips.
"Has Mikoto already participated yet?" Minato asked, looking around for her.
"No, she just got on stage now,"
