Chapter 256: Last One
"Hello."
With Kyle delivered, all I wanted right now was to get the fuck out of here.
"Kill all three of them."
Regardless of what came after, the word kill didn't sit right with me at the moment.
After managing to escape one entrapment, I had fallen into another and this one, unlike the last, was backed by the government of the most powerful state.
I had literally just watched two missiles fly past me.
"Can you repeat that?"
"I don't trust the three of them. This is for both your safety and the governor's."
Hearing Ninja Momma talk about trust, my eyes narrowed. Ever since I entered the Dome, I had been building a case against her.
How could she now say she didn't trust the people she had sent me to, the ones she had me risk my life with?
"Are you aware you were fooled?"
True, I had been suspicious of Ninja Momma, but my interrogation in the basement had cleared her of setting me up. Instead, she had fallen for a fake SOS.
"I suspected. That's why I sent you."
"Are you aware of what's going on here now?"
"Yes. Apologies, I..."
"Crap," I muttered, staring at the phone in my hand. Then I crushed it.
"Hey....." Diego began.
Bang!!
Bang!!
I ended Diego instantly, then dealt with Farak. Taking a step back, I dodged and delivered a slap.
The back of my hand connected with Betty, sending her flying into the wall on the left.
As she dropped from the point of collision, her feet touched the ground for a second before she tried to flee but a swift kick took her off her feet, and she fell flat to the ground.
Ending Farak and Diego had been easy, but with Betty, I was willing to allow room for error.
"You can't escape me. What can you say to save yourself?"
"Fuck you."
Whether she thought I was asking her for information, or she realized I was giving her a way out and simply didn't care, her response was good enough for me.
Any guilt I felt disappeared, and a smile came to my face as I pulled the trigger.
With my Desert Eagle vanishing, I turned on my heel and focused on Kyle's body with a contemplative expression.
"What do I do with him? Perhaps I shouldn't have destroyed the phone."
With three gunshots fired, staying hidden was no longer an option. I didn't have time to think. Once more, I threw Kyle over my shoulder. Bending my knees, pressure built within them, and the stored momentum surged from my head down into my body.
Haaaaaa!
I let out a long breath, and just as three approaching soldiers rounded into the alley, I shot up.
Though powerful, my jump was light and precise. It took me exactly where I wanted to go, not the rooftop, but a window several stories high, which happened to be open.
Placing my hand on the edge of the window, I pulled myself in. Dropping to the ground, I stood and observed the room.
"This should do."
It was an old, abandoned bedroom. I placed Kyle on a dusty bed and took a seat on a stool behind it.
With my speed and abilities, I could escape the entrapment but my fear and respect for the military still held strong, especially after seeing what one of their toys could do.
The fact that the fighter had left after delivering just two payloads meant the remaining zone wasn't considered hostile. Even if it was, it clearly wasn't much of a threat.
I had moved a good distance away from the destruction boundary and now sat comfortably, waiting for the alert line of soldiers to pass me by.
It took several minutes, but eventually I was able to open the window on the opposite side. Taking a last look at Kyle's still sleeping form, I whispered:
"Home free."
I left the building unburdened but it didn't last long.
The Dome still held firm.
Logically, if the military had stormed the area and even brought in a fighter, they should've conquered it both on land and in the air. But the barrier remained.
"There are no witches, though," I quickly noted.
I figured the witches were the reason there were no helicopters in the air, but now I had a bad feeling in my gut as I got closer and closer to the barrier.
Readying myself for any surprises, I jumped from rooftop to rooftop, soaring toward the barrier. Relief washed over me as my body passed through it but just as my foot touched the next rooftop, my head snapped back.
This wasn't caused by Echo, I hadn't activated it yet. Rather, it was the intense gaze I suddenly felt land on me.
My eyes caught a blurred image of a figure floating more than a hundred meters away, alone at the top of the Dome's center on her broom. The multiple witches that had been circling it earlier were nowhere in sight.
"She's powerful."
Lifting her hand, which held what looked like a wand, a book floated before her. Pages flipped automatically. While staring at me, she waved the wand.
By my estimation, she was over 500 meters away. Yet, as soon as she waved, a powerful burst of air exploded in front of her.
In the blink of an eye, that air closed more than 50 meters. Mid-flight, a blue translucent bullet the size of a missile formed.
My heart pounded in fear at the sight but a second later, Spell Breaker appeared in my hand, and I opened fire.
Bang!!
Bang!!
I took no chances. The powerful explosion that rippled through the air said all I needed to know about what would have happened if I got hit.
As the sky lit up, I dropped to the ground to escape the blast and, without delay, took off at my fastest speed.
Thankfully, the high-level witch, whoever she was, chose to remain at the top of the Dome rather than chase me. After running through Los Angeles and circling several areas for about 20 minutes, constantly wary of pursuit, I finally returned to my apartment.
