Quirkless Hero

Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Walking the Line of Illegality

"All Might, do you believe what that guy said?"

"No, I don't!"

On the way back to the police station, inside the police car, Officer Tsukauchi asked the now-thin All Might, who firmly rejected the idea.

"Based on the logic of what he said, and the way everything appears on the surface, it all seems completely normal. But things being *too* normal—that's exactly what doesn't sit right."

"The League of Villains wouldn't do anything meaningless, and my instincts as a hero tell me that Chisaki is lying."

"I agree that this situation is very suspicious, but right now, [Shie Hassaikai] looks clean. We have no grounds to arrest them."

"Hmm..."

All Might and Officer Tsukauchi had no choice but to back off. As a yakuza organization, [Shie Hassaikai] hadn't been found guilty of any crimes yet. Under Japanese law, they had no authority to make arrests or force confessions.

After returning to the police station, the heroes and police split up to take action. Midoriya Izuku, Togata Mirio, and Hado Nejire accompanied the police to take Eri to the hospital. According to Chisaki, the girl's Quirk was extremely dangerous, so she needed to be safely secured.

They also informed Eraserhead to meet them at the hospital. With Eri's unpredictable Quirk, only his "Erasure" ability could prevent any sudden, dangerous incidents.

Meanwhile, All Might and Officer Tsukauchi headed to the Nighteye Agency. They had received a call from Sir Nighteye, who hinted at a larger conspiracy involving [Shie Hassaikai].

---

At the hospital, Midoriya Izuku sat by the little girl's bedside, unwilling to leave her alone.

"Big brother... do you believe in Eri?"

"Yes. Eri is a good girl. We all believe in you, and that's why we're working so hard to bring the bad guys to justice."

Gently patting the girl's head, Midoriya tried his best to smile and comfort her. Even though their operation against [Shie Hassaikai] had failed, all they could do now was trust All Might and the police.

Togata Mirio and Hado Nejire, being third-year students with plenty of experience, were busy with their hero duties. Mirio waited for doctors to analyze the data they had collected from [Shie Hassaikai], while Hado worked on finding Eri's mother.

The girl had been abandoned by her mother, then taken in by her grandfather, only to endure this ordeal. Right now, her only family who might care for her was her mother.

"Midoriya, is this the child?"

"Yes..."

Aizawa Shouta arrived at the hospital right on time. After hearing about the situation, he had left U.A. High School immediately. By the time he arrived, Midoriya and the others had already brought Eri to the hospital.

Seeing Midoriya peeling an apple for the little girl, Aizawa sighed. Why was this kid always in the middle of trouble? Could it be that the League of Villains had truly marked him as a target?

"Midoriya, leave this to me. You should head back to school."

As a pro hero and a teacher at U.A. High, Aizawa felt it was his responsibility to keep his students out of overly complicated situations. It would be better for Midoriya to stay away from Eri's case.

"Okay..."

Midoriya nodded quietly, following Aizawa's advice. He headed back to school, intending to prepare some necessary gear.

"Eri, listen to this uncle, okay? Big brother will come visit you tomorrow, all right?"

"Okay!"

The little girl nodded obediently. She knew she had already caused a lot of trouble for the kind big brother. Even though she didn't want him to leave, she didn't want to burden him any further.

"See you tomorrow!"

After gently patting Eri's head one last time, Midoriya stood up and left.

"Taking care of a little girl... All Might sure knows how to assign troublesome tasks."

Though he complained, Aizawa sat in the chair Midoriya had just vacated. He cut the peeled apple into small pieces, making it easier for Eri to eat.

Inside the "Night Eye Agency":

"Are you saying that all those gang members have teamed up?"

"That's right!"

All Might and Officer Tsukauchi sat on one side of the office, while Night Eye stared intently at the computer screen. The information he had gathered clearly pointed to this outcome.

"What do those guys want to do?"

"This is probably easy to guess..." All Might said, his expression full of suspicion. Officer Tsukauchi, rubbing his forehead, explained the reason:

"Since you debuted as a hero, All Might, Japan's crime rate has steadily dropped to its lowest point. Many young people admire you and dream of becoming heroes, and the reality is that this has happened."

"Nowadays, we can say we live in a hero society. There are thousands of hero agencies across the country, not to mention many lesser-known professional heroes."

"With so many professional heroes in society, the criminal gangs have been struggling. According to our police records, more than 20 gangs have disappeared in the last decade. The ones still remaining are facing the risk of being disbanded."

"So, you mean!?"

All Might suddenly understood. Tsukauchi nodded and said seriously:

"The gang members have organized and are planning something big."

"This is bad..." All Might thought. Even though the remaining gangs in Japan had weakened, if they were to unite and take action, the damage to ordinary citizens could be very severe.

"You don't need to worry about that," Tsukauchi said, waving his hand to reassure All Might when he saw his worried expression.

"These gang members, even though they have a bad reputation, actually rely on the support of ordinary citizens to survive. They won't engage in illegal acts like the villains."

"That's true..."

All Might relaxed a bit. As long as they didn't harm ordinary citizens, he could tolerate the situation.

Night Eye, who was still scanning through the information, suddenly slammed his hands on the table and stood up, startling All Might and Tsukauchi. What happened to Night Eye!?

"They've moved! The gang members, they've made their move!!"

"What!?"

Today, Japanese news outlets were broadcasting a major story. It was about what happened at *Shie Hassaikai*.

The young lady from *Shie Hassaikai*, Eri, has a very dangerous Quirk. When it first awakened, it caused her father to disappear. She was sent to live with her grandfather, and her Quirk went out of control again, causing another caretaker to vanish.

*Shie Hassaikai* kept this a secret. Under the orders of Eri's grandfather, the old leader, the group worked hard to "treat" the young lady. However, since she was just a child, she didn't understand right from wrong and ran away, spreading false claims that her grandfather was abusing her.

When someone encountered Eri and called the police, All Might and the police investigated *Shie Hassaikai*. It turned out that it was just a lie that the girl spread because she didn't listen to anyone, and the heroes and police had wasted their time.

Moreover, this time, All Might and the police didn't go undercover. Many people took photos along the way and posted them online, and several citizens witnessed the heroes and police return empty-handed.

The online discussion was heated, with most people criticizing Eri:

"She has such a dangerous Quirk, and she ran away on her own. What if she hurt someone else?!"

"Shie Hassaikai is really loyal. They sacrificed their own people for this troublesome young lady, and they're still working so hard for her."

"Now, All Might and the police don't seem to get it. Can a 7-year-old girl's words be taken seriously? They didn't investigate properly beforehand, and now they've wasted time and effort."

"The comment above is right. All Might could've stopped so many crimes with the time he spent on this. It's just not worth it."

...

The online comments were full of nonsense, and All Might's face darkened. He finally understood what those guys were trying to do: they were using the media to attack Eri, an innocent child!

"We can't let this slide. Prepare for the second operation! Night Eye, you're in charge this time!!"

All Might's anger flared, and Night Eye adjusted his glasses. He wasn't going to just let these guys do whatever they wanted!

---

Back at school, Midoriya Izuku saw the flood of news articles on his phone. They were all blaming Eri, with negative comments attacking a 7-year-old girl.

He turned off his phone, silently heading to his destination. By now, the sky had darkened, and the students were returning to their dorms.

After reaching his dorm in the Support Department, Midoriya packed some things he might need into his bag. He said nothing and left.

"Midoriya-chan..."

Hatsume Mei noticed Midoriya Izuku's actions but didn't say anything to stop him. She had seen the news about Eri too.

That night, Midoriya Izuku arrived at the B-class dormitory. By now, the students were all staying quietly in their rooms. Midoriya quietly approached a door and knocked.

"Midoriya?"

The person who opened the door was Shinso Hitoshi. He was surprised to see Midoriya Izuku and called out in shock.

"Shinso, there's something I need your help with, but the consequences could end your future as a hero."

"Okay, can you help me...?"

Midoriya Izuku bowed his head, feeling guilty. He knew he was being selfish—this wasn't something he should drag Shinso into, but he was the only one who could help him now.

"Sure, no problem!"

Shinso Hitoshi answered without hesitation, and Midoriya looked up in surprise. He had prepared himself to be rejected.

"Midoriya, you just need to tell me—just like before—we're doing this to help others, right?"

"Yeah..."

Midoriya nodded. The only way to get the evidence they needed was by using illegal methods. This was the only way to help Eri, the innocent child.

"Then let's go!"
