Chapter 7: A Place from the Past

I'm Sam, a middle-class citizen who just wants to be rich. I'm 16 and yesterday I ran into this weird guy, his name was Kanji or Kalenji or something and I was so kind to be and helped him and he repaid my kindness by slamming his door in my face! As the middle class's best pickpocket, I take major offense to that so here I am in front of his house. I'm ready to confront him for what he did. Just once I gain the confidence to knock on his door… What am I talking about! He wasn't even scary, j-just tall, and muscular. Never mind I can't do this. No! I never back down, here I come Kanji! Knock, Knock. N-now when he answers, I'll give him a piece of my mind. The door began to unlock, and I felt myself swallow, I saw it start to creak open and I felt a bit nervous. That's when, I saw him… wait that's not Kalenji. Wait! Am I at the wrong house?

"Oh, you're the little boy Kenji was with yesterday! Are you guys' friends." I had to quickly respond!

"No sorry ma'am I believe I'm at the wrong, wait? You said the boy with Kenji? Y-you know Kenji." The women nodded.

"I'm Kenji's mother, sorry he's not home right now but he should be back soon if you would like to come inside." So, his name was Kenji? Better yet, he lived with his mom. I nodded and went inside; I looked around the townhouse. It was a regular house except some of the pictures inside their picture frames were ripped and some of the glass on some frames were shattered and glued back together. I think Kenji's mom noticed me staring.

"Oh yes, sorry about those. I usually hide them when we have guests, but I had no idea you were coming." I looked at her, I didn't want to be rude, but I was too curious.

"What happened to them? Like the pictures and the glass?" She looked a little sad but smiled.

"Kenji just came home one day, and he took a hammer and smashed them. The other frames he took out the photos, ripped them, and burned a part of them. Never knew what drove him to do it." He was already scary enough but to do something that crazy. I followed Kenji's mom into the kitchen and sat down.

"So, dear, what's your name? What would you like to eat?" She was a lot sweeter than him.

"I'm Sam, you really don't need to offer me any food." I was originally here to give Kenji and piece of my mind and maybe scam him for some extra cash, but I can't do that to this poor woman I mean she already has to deal with Kenji. She sat down with me and smiled so softly.

"Well, I never told you my name how very rude of me, you can call me Mis. Osoto." She looked so young, and I knew it was rude to ask but I needed to know.

"Mis. Osoto, how old are you? May I ask because you seem quite young." She laughed a little.

"Why thank you, I don't mind you asking at all. I'm 38 years old and my son Kenji is 21. Yes, I know what you're thinking. I was 17 when I gave birth to Kenji." It's like she could read my mind.

"Yeah, I was thinking about that. You're very kind Mis. Osoto." She was so kind and willing to answer questions.

"Well, of course you are one of Kenji's friends after all… right?" I couldn't tell her no after how nice she was.

"Yeah, me and Kenji are friends. Though we met recently there was an instant click." I couldn't believe I was lying to her.

"I'm so glad, Kenji doesn't really make friends ever since-" Slam.

"Mom. Please, could you not." We hadn't even noticed Kenji had come back.

"Kenji hon, I was just telling your friend Sam about you while he waited for you." Kenji looked at me the moment she said friend and I felt myself go pale.

"He's not my friend, and I think it's time he goes home." Kenji began to walk upstairs when his mom called out.

"Kenji at least walk him home he's been waiting for you for a while." Kenji sighed but reluctantly walked out the front door and waited for me outside. I thanked his mom one last time before leaving outside. Me and Kenji walked in silence for a while until he stopped.

"Where do you live anyway?" I turned to him; I hadn't even realized that we were walking with no end goal.

"I… I don't want to go home right now." Kenji looked away from me and began walking away, I started to follow him.

"Can I go wherever you're going Kenji?" He took his time before responding.

"It doesn't matter. You're already following me anyway." I kept following behind Kenji and he stopped in a flower store. Was he getting flowers for a girlfriend?

"Who are you buying flowers for?" Kenji turned to me.

"No one I'm just looking. What's it to you anyway." I shook my head.

"No, I ju- "

"ARAHHH! LET GO" There was a sudden high pitch scream, Kenji didn't react, but I looked out the flower store window. There was a little girl and a young woman and the there were castle guards pulling them apart. A crowd began to gather, and no one was helping. I can't let this happen!

"Kenji! We have to help those girls!" Kenji turned to me with an annoyed expression.

"What, why?"

"What do you mean what why?! They're in danger! That's why!" Kenji looked out the window then rolled his eyes.

"No, I already have to put up with you." There's no way this guy is serious. Whatever I don't need him I'll go on my own.

"Come on let's leave- Wait, kid where are you going?" I left the store and ran in between the guard and the younger girl.

"L-l-leave her alone man! She's j-just a kid!" The little girl fell on the floor.

"Are you serious? How dare you try and defend me when you're out here stuttering!" Was this girl being for real? I just saved her! The guard punched me, and my vision began to narrow and go dark…

If I had known this kid would have been so stupid, I wouldn't have let him come with me… but damn, I can't just leave some kid get the daylights knocked out of him. Mom would kill me if she found out. God damn it. I walked out of the store still not showing my face. These people don't know my secret move so this should be easy. I slightly took my sword out with one hand and kept the other one behind my back.

"Kid you really think you can single handedly beat us with some sword. Haha."

"I bet I could actually beat you with this sword… but I don't want a bounty on my head." I pulled out my smoke gun and shot it at the guards. It caused a huge dark smoke cloud to cover their vision. I turned around and they just sat on the floor like idiots.

"Now's our time to run dumbasses!" The older girl got up and pulled Sam by the hand since he was closer to her.

"Follow me, I know somewhere we can go." She began to run and the younger girl trip while running. God damn it.

"Hey, are you ok? Can you run?" She looked up at me and I noticed her ankle was twisted, Jesus my life sucks. I picked her up and threw her over my shoulder while following the older girl, the smoke was already clearing from the guards that were waving their hands around.

"Hey! I have my own two legs I don't need to be carried."

"Shut your mouth." I hadn't even noticed where we were headed until we arrived. Seeing that building brought so many memories to mind. None of which I wanted to remember. The younger girl began to punch my back.

"What's with the sudden stop, keep going slowpoke." So annoying, I dropped her headfirst onto the floor.

"There, this is where you wanted to go right? I'm leaving." I turned around to leave but the older girl stopped me, she grabbed my hand.

"Wait, don't leave just yet." I pulled my hand away.

"Why? I don't know you." The older girl seemed surprised by my response.

"I'm Iris, oh and this is Ivy" She spoke as she helped the little girl up.

"So? I don't care who you are." I began to walk away again when the Iris called out.

"Fine, do what you want but I bet the guards are still out there searching for us." I turned around and she had a smug smile on her face. I could just kill them, but I didn't want to cause a scene, guess I really didn't have a choice.

"…" The little girl rolled her eyes.

"Fine, what building are you staying in."

"The old academy dorm room." I felt a shiver go down my spine, I didn't want to go, but going back without killing the guards they could track me and hurt mom.

"Fine…" I picked up Sam who was still knocked out and I followed Ivy and Iris until we reached the room. Room 803, I looked at the nameplate *Iven Raskolnikov* my nametag was gone, the night I left the hospital I snuck up and ripped out my name tag and left the apartment untouched. I couldn't stand looking inside the apartment, our beds were messy as if those girls had been sleeping on them. The apartment was a mess and most of the stuff had been moved around or thrown in a corner of the room, it made my blood boil. They had added a mini stove and other kitchen stuff also small hanging lights and they changed the old posters for new ones. Ivy jumped on to Iven's bed. "Ugh, finally I can go to sleep in my bed." I felt my body shiver again, there Iris spoke.

"You can't go to bed before eating, let me make you some food first." I felt my eyes go bloodshot, I dropped Sam on the floor knocking him conscious again. I grabbed Ivy's wrist and pulled her off the bed throwing her on to the floor. Her head hit the floor and she began to bleed, she looked at me with terror in her eyes and Sam and Iris came running. Iris yelled.

"What is wrong with you?! Who the hell throws a little girl against the floor?!" My vision was shaky and I just ran out of the apartment, it was already night and I just went to the roof, running up the stairs. Then lied down closing my eyes. I took out a cigarette and lit it. Smoking here reminded me of the time I had smoked with Iven on his birthday, I regretted getting mad at him so much I wish I never yelled at him ever. While thinking I hear footsteps, I sat up and my hood fell off.

"Wow, you have white hair? It's really pretty, why'd you dye it?" I turned and looked over at Ivy as she sat down next to me, her head all bandaged up.

"Its not dyed, its my natural hair color, I hate it."

"Why would you hate it, it looks good, and why do you wear contacts? What color are your eyes?" How the hell could she tell I had contacts; I didn't respond and just slowly took them out of my eyes.

"Thought so, you have purple eyes. You're Kenji Osoto, you attended this soldier academy in room 803 with a roommate named Iven. That's why you were so shaky and wanted to leave, you showed signs of PTSD from being here. When you saw me throw myself on the bed, which I would have to guess was the person named Ivens bed you couldn't stand it and reacted before thinking. You and Iven left the dorm one day and are said to be dead in the school system but you're sitting right in front of me alive and well. Tell me how come?" I was shocked, how did she know so much. Why did she know so much about me, how did she know who Iven was. So many questions were running through my mind.

"How do you know me." I put my hand on my knife just in case.

"When I first came here… I found the room strange, it was the only room that looked like the people who had lived there had just up and left one day. I found letters addressed to a person named Kenji. Sam told us your name after you left and though Kenji is an uncommon name I still needed more proof, but your reaction to seeing the building and your reaction to me on the bed was enough to confirm." I held on to my knife and slowly took it out.

"So, how do you feel sitting next to someone who's supposed to be dead." Ivy looked a little nervous.

"I believe that you never died obviously, and I don't know why you would be marked as dead, but I have a feeling something happened while you attended this academy." I put my knife back and sat back down picking up my cigarette to keep smoking.

"What happened here shouldn't concern someone of your age. You're too young to have problems." Ivy looked down.

"I have my own problems you dick." A tear rolled down Ivy's cheek, I wasn't very good with kids so I tried to think of what Iven would have done. I put my cigarette out on the ground and wiped her tear.

"Look… I don't know what you've gone through, but it's in the past now and you shouldn't have to worry at such a young age." Ivy shook her head.

"No! You don't know anything! I'm all alone, I've lost everybody." I couldn't beat her at that, I at least still had my mom waiting for me with open arms. I wrapped my arms around her awkwardly and hugged her.

"You're right, I haven't lost everyone. And I couldn't imagine losing anyone else. I can't bring back the people you've lost but I can stay here for a bit, and I can promise to protect you."
