Pokemon: The Untamed Journey

Chapter 37: Fear

----

Tap, tap, tap.

The sound of Kai's slippers against the floor echoed louder in Moltres's ears than they should have. Its heart was already racing like a drum.

I shouldn't have called out! Moltres thought.

Panic crept into the legendary Pokémon's mind. 'What now? Hide the evidence? No, that won't work I'd still end up getting pummeled by all of them'

Frozen in place, Moltres maintained an awkward "one-legged flamingo" stance, its body stiff as a rock. Its face betrayed visible terror as Kai and his Pokémon burst into the backyard.

Kai paused to take in the bizarre scene: Moltres standing petrified, balancing awkwardly on one leg, and below it, the Pokémon egg inside the incubator was glowing intensely like a flashing beacon.

The tension in the air lingered for only a moment before Kai exhaled deeply. His heart, which had been pounding furiously, finally settled.

"So that's what it was. You scared me for nothing," he muttered, his voice laced with relief. Looking at Moltres's comically rigid posture, Kai couldn't help but laugh. "Relax, it's fine. This isn't some disaster it's just the sign that the egg is about to hatch."

Hearing this, the six Pokémon who had rushed in, poised for battle, eased their stances.

Realizing there was no imminent danger, they approached the egg one by one, gazing at it curiously before heading back inside for some much-needed rest.

The commotion ended as abruptly as it started, leaving Kai and a very relieved Moltres to face each other in the now-quiet yard. After a few awkward seconds, Kai broke the silence.

"Moltres, weren't you born from an egg yourself? Why are you so worked up over this?"

Moltres hesitated, recalling memories buried deep within its mind. After a moment, it shook its head and replied, "Screaahh, Screaahh..." (The first thing

I remember is opening my eyes to a sea of magma. There was no glowing egg, no hatching process. I wasn't born this way)

Kai nodded thoughtfully. "So you're saying you were naturally born, probably in a volcanic environment... Interesting."

Approaching Moltres, Kai crouched and picked up the incubator. The third bottle of nutrient solution inside had been fully absorbed, its contents now completely transparent.

"In just over a week, this egg has already absorbed what would normally take a standard Pokémon egg 21 days. Incredible," Kai murmured. His curiosity about the Pokémon inside grew stronger.

He straightened up and said, "Let's move this into the house. It's getting colder out here, and a warm environment will be better for the hatchling."

Moltres silently agreed and followed Kai. Its movements were sluggish after days of doing little besides eating and sleeping.

At the farmhouse door, Kai opened both doors wide to let Moltres through. Before stepping inside, Moltres reassured him that its flames were under control and wouldn't accidentally burn the wooden floors or furniture.

Inside, Kai led Moltres to the fireplace in the living room. Tossing a few logs into the hearth, he turned to Moltres expectantly.

"What?" Moltres tilted its head, confused.

"Light it," Kai said, exasperated. "You're a Fire-type, aren't you? Just a few small flames will do. Don't burn the house down."

Moltres huffed, feeling slightly insulted to be reduced to a glorified lighter, but complied nonetheless.

It spat three small orange flames into the fireplace, igniting the logs instantly. Warm yellow light filled the room.

"Great control," Kai praised, clapping his hands. Moltres lifted its head proudly, clearly pleased by the compliment.

Kai carefully placed the incubator near the fireplace, close enough to bask in the warmth without overheating. With the radiant Moltres nearby, the conditions for hatching were perfect.

Next, Kai prepared for the hatchling's arrival, setting out bottles of Moomoo Milk, warm water, and soft towels. He and Moltres then settled by the fireplace to keep watch over the egg.

The hours stretched on as they waited, the glow from the egg growing stronger with each passing moment.

Other Pokémon returned from their duties around the farm, gathering around the egg in silent anticipation.

By the time the sky darkened to twilight, the egg's glow had become almost constant, flickering like a pulsating light bulb.

The air was thick with tension, even the normally playful Cottonee sitting quietly by Eldegoss.

Finally, as the glow reached its peak, a sharp cracking sound pierced the silence.

Crack! Crack!

The eggshell fractured, splinters falling away as the life inside struggled to break free. Encouraged by the energy it had absorbed, the Pokémon inside pushed harder, using the small horn on its head to pierce the shell.

Everyone, even Moltres, watched with bated breath. The legendary Pokémon, once dismissive of the weak, found itself silently rooting for the tiny creature to succeed.

The egg wobbled, the cracks widening with each push. Though Moltres couldn't explain why, they felt deeply invested in this moment.

It realized that during its time with the egg, something had changed within it a connection had formed.

Three minutes felt like an eternity, but finally, the moment arrived.

"Pew~~~!"

As darkness fell completely, a short, clear cry broke the tension. A faint light illuminated the room as the Pokémon emerged from the shell, blinking at the world for the first time.

Kai smiled warmly, his voice soft as he spoke. "Welcome to this beautiful world, little one."
