Just as a major battle was about to unfold, a yellow figure flashed through the sky, moving like lightning, effortlessly penetrating the Sandstorm created by Tyranitar.
In the next moment, a booming "Hyper Beam!" echoed through the air.
A blinding light descended from the sky, sweeping toward Carr and Orm's Pokémon with tremendous force. The attack was swift and unexpected.
Before Carr and Orm could even react, their Pokémon were already struck down, incapacitated by the overwhelming power of the beam.
Explosions followed in quick succession, sending black smoke billowing from the ground and spreading into the distance.
Chris looked up in awe, his eyes locking onto a familiar yet imposing figure.
A middle-aged man with striking red hair and a blue combat uniform stood on the back of a Dragonite, his cape billowing dramatically in the Sandstorm winds.
It was Lance.
Lance, the Champion of the Johto Region!
"Time's up!" Chris murmured, recalling his Pokémon.
With Lance now on the scene, Chris felt his intervention was unnecessary. Thankfully, he had captured the red Gyarados before Lance's arrival.
As the smoke cleared, the six Pokémon that had been ready to fight Chris lay motionless on the ground, all defeated.
"Darn it! How did the Johto Champion get here so fast?" Carr growled, glaring at Lance hovering above.
When Carr turned to Orm, he saw him bolting toward the forest.
"Seriously?! You act so trustworthy, but when it matters, you just run away!" Carr shouted in frustration.
Orm, however, had no intention of sticking around. "I may be honest, but I'm not dumb! This is Lance we're talking about—someone even Giovanni might struggle against. If I don't run now, I might as well surrender myself!"
Carr hesitated briefly but decided to flee as well. However, Dragonite had already locked onto him. Swooping down like a dark green meteor, Dragonite's massive form crashed to the ground, halting Carr in his tracks.
Carr froze, raising his hands in surrender as Dragonite loomed over him, its colossal fist stopping mere inches from his face.
Terrified, Carr surrendered completely, muttering under his breath, "I'm still just a grunt..."
Lance dismounted from Dragonite, ignoring Carr entirely as Dragonite cuffed him with its own claws. Instead, Lance walked directly to Chris.
"Well done, young Trainer. I heard reports of a Gyarados causing chaos here. Where is it now?" Lance's tone was calm but commanding.
"I've already caught it," Chris replied, holding up a Premier Ball.
Lance nodded slightly, his attention on the Pokémon rather than the subdued Rocket members. He seemed satisfied that the red Gyarados incident had been resolved.
"What about that Rocket who got away? Aren't you going after him?" Chris asked hesitantly.
"Don't worry," Lance said with a slight smirk. "When the rats return to their nest, I'll deal with them all."
"Oh, by the way, it was Pryce from Mahogany Town who alerted me to the Gyarados issue. Have you seen him?" Lance added.
"He's over there," Chris pointed in the direction he had come from.
"Got it," Lance said, mounting Dragonite once more. Without another word, he flew off.
Chris stood there as the scene before him began to collapse. He blinked and found himself back in his dormitory.
The quest was complete.
The handheld game console displayed the mission's settlement screen:
[Quest "Lake of Rage" (Completed). Rewards obtained:]
Random advanced Pokémon item Smooth Rock
Rainstorm Scarf (Bonus reward)
A glimmering piece of rock fell into Chris's hands.
The random premium Pokémon item obtained was revealed to be a secret treasure-level Smooth Rock.
Erosion · Smooth Rock: Extends Sandstorm weather to 15 turns. Each time Sandstorm damage is inflicted, physical and special defense is reduced by 1%, and this effect stacks up to 20 times.
The normal Smooth Rock extends Sandstorm weather from five to eight rounds. A treasure-level Smooth Rock increases it to eleven rounds, while the secret treasure-level Smooth Rock boosts it to an incredible fifteen rounds.
In the game, each round represents a turn, but in reality, it reflects the intensity and control of the weather!
Chris knew that Tyranitar had already digested the effects of a treasure-level Smooth Rock, so its bonus was no longer applicable. However, with the newly acquired secret treasure-level Smooth Rock, Tyranitar's weather-controlling abilities would advance to a whole new level!
As for the Rainstorm Scarf, it was a Item Chris had never encountered before, making it an exciting surprise.
Rainstorm Scarf: Changes the weather to heavy rain when the Pokémon holding it enters battle. During rain, water-type moves do not consume PP. (Exclusive to Magikarp and Gyarados; invalid when held by other Pokémon.)
Since Haunter's exclusive item, the Gastly Barrier, this was the second exclusive item Chris had seen. The Rainstorm Scarf's effects were astonishing.
An endless supply of water moves during rain? The implications were terrifying.
In games, PP refers to the number of times a move can be used. However, in reality, it's more like an indicator of how much physical energy is required to perform a move. Without sufficient stamina, even the strongest Pokémon couldn't keep attacking indefinitely.
With the Rainstorm Scarf, Chris began to wonder if the red Gyarados could be used as the core of a rain team.
Pocketing the items, Chris made his way back to Mahogany Town.
Without the red Gyarados, the rainy weather had cleared.
After stopping at the Pokémon Center to heal his team and swapping to his main Pokémon, Chris headed to the Mahogany Town Gym to see if Pryce had returned.
Pryce was back, but he declined Chris's challenge to the Gym.
"The red Gyarados caused a lot of destruction in Mahogany Town," Pryce explained. "I need to focus on helping with repairs and preparing defenses in case Team Rocket strikes again. Come back in a few months."
"Come back in a few months?" Chris muttered, feeling a mix of disappointment and understanding.
It seemed like a good time to head back to the Hoenn Region.
Leaving Mahogany Town, Chris decided to fly to Olivine City to check if Jasmine had returned. If not, he'd make his way back to Hoenn.
As soon as he stepped outside, Chris spotted Lance and his Dragonite heading toward a small house nearby. They entered quickly, and moments later, a loud bang echoed from inside.
Startled, Chris moved his character toward the house and found a large hole blasted into the right corner of the room. A staircase leading underground was revealed.
As Chris stepped closer, a notification appeared before him:
[Yes/No: Enter the quest "Rocket Hideout" (Special rewards for first completion)]
[Recommended Level: 70]
Chris hesitated for a moment before grinning. This was going to be an adventure.
