Chapter 51: Chapter 51: The Happo Navy
"Jon, you're finally awake."
As soon as Jon opened his eyes, he heard Dragon's voice.
"What happened to me?"
Jon patted his head, feeling a bit dizzy, and asked with confusion.
Dragon quickly explained:
"You've been asleep for two full days and nights. If I hadn't seen that you were otherwise fine, I'd have been seriously worried about you."
"I slept for two whole days?"
Jon was shocked—he'd never slept that long before.
"Yeah, it's obvious you were completely exhausted; that's why you slept for so long," Dragon said.
"We've reached the West Blue, right?"
"Yes, we're currently on our way to find the Happo Navy."
Jon struggled to stand up and, after a moment, already felt somewhat better. His head no longer spun as it had moments ago.
After stretching his body, though still a bit sore and numb, it was no longer severe and didn't hinder his movements.
"Jon, your recovery speed is unbelievable. You had so many wounds, and yet you've already completely healed!"
Dragon was amazed by Jon's recovery ability. When Jon had fallen asleep, his body had been covered in injuries. But after sleeping for two days, most of his wounds had healed, without even needing treatment—they'd simply healed on their own.
Jon smiled; he was well aware of his own healing capabilities. Unless he suffered serious injuries, minor wounds would heal quickly for him.
Even in the case of serious injuries, by absorbing life energy from plants, he could recover rapidly.
In terms of endurance and recovery, Jon was definitely resilient.
After waking up, Jon devoured enough food to feed seven or eight people. After eating, he felt completely rejuvenated.
Familiar with his own body, Jon could distinctly feel that he had grown stronger—both his physique and his strength had improved.
He felt a surge of emotion. The brutal battle with the Sea Kings in the Calm Belt had been torturous, but there was no denying that it had improved his progress far more than any solo training could.
However, that type of training was too dangerous. If Garp hadn't been there as a powerful safeguard, he would've died countless times.
The method was effective but impractical—it wasn't as if there would always be a strong person by his side to protect him.
Shortly after Jon woke up, Garp came to see him. Seeing that Jon was fine, Garp burst into laughter and made a few jokes.
Even though Jon's recent suffering was due to Garp's rigorous training, Jon bore no resentment—in fact, he was grateful. All his progress was thanks to Garp's guidance.
After half a day of rest, Jon couldn't hold back and resumed training.
"This kid… with such dedication and talent, he's destined for greatness."
Garp admired Jon's hard work. As one of the world's strongest fighters, Garp understood the importance of both effort and talent. Jon had both, which meant it was only a matter of time before he became a formidable figure.
Upon entering the West Blue, Garp's search became much more efficient. On the second day after Jon woke up, Garp located the Happo Navy.
Once the Happo Navy was found, Garp led his soldiers to confront them. The Happo Navy, led by Chinjao, immediately engaged them in battle.
For Jon, this was the first time he witnessed Garp fight a powerful adversary—especially a pirate with a bounty of over 500 million Berries.
The Chinjao of Thirty Years Ago, with his indestructible Drill Head, was far stronger than the Chinjao depicted later in the storyline. In his prime, he was at the peak of his strength and fought fiercely against Garp one-on-one.
The clash between these two powerful figures was earth-shattering.
Although Jon was also fighting against members of the Happo Navy alongside the other Marines, part of his attention remained focused on Garp and Chinjao's intense battle.
The Happo Navy wasn't short of skilled fighters, but most of them were held off by Garp's officers. Jon's opponent was a skilled swordsman with considerable strength.
However, with his improved physical abilities, Jon wasn't at a disadvantage against the sword user's aggressive attacks. Using his Devil Fruit ability, Jon gradually gained the upper hand and forced his opponent into a desperate retreat.
The battle didn't last long.
Once Chinjao's Drill Head was shattered by Garp's iron fist, the battle ended. The rest of the Happo Navy was also defeated one by one, and the Marines emerged victorious.
By standard protocol, a pirate of Chinjao's caliber should have been sent to Impel Down, the infamous underwater prison.
However, what happened next took Jon by surprise.
After the Marines captured the Happo Navy, the king of the Flower Country in the West Blue personally approached Garp, asking him to release them.
To Jon's astonishment, Garp agreed to release Chinjao and the Happo Navy in exchange for substantial compensation from the Flower Country.
Jon was stunned.
Chinjao and the Happo Navy were pirates who had committed numerous misdeeds. Capturing pirates like them only to release them contradicted Jon's perception of Marine Justice.
"Surprised?"
Dragon, who had been paying close attention to Jon's reactions, noticed his shock and said:
"This is how the world works. The Marines may carry the banner of justice and seek to eradicate pirates, but in the face of absolute interests, they can compromise with pirates.
"By releasing the Happo Navy, the Marines gain the support of the Flower Country. Capturing them would yield no additional benefits. In this situation, if you were the Marine Admiral, what would you choose?"
Jon glanced at Dragon—this guy sure wasn't afraid to speak his mind.
"The adult world runs on interests. Do you really think I don't understand that?"
Dragon laughed.
"Wow, Jon. I didn't expect you to say something like that."
Jon rolled his eyes.
"You think I'm a three-year-old? If I can't even grasp something that simple, how would I survive in this world?"
Dragon chuckled.
"I used to think you'd turn out like Sakazuki. But now I see you're much more pragmatic than him."
"By releasing the Happo Navy, the Marines both demonstrate their power and gain real benefits. But they forget that those harmed by the Happo Navy are the real innocent victims."
Hearing Dragon's remark, Jon keenly sensed Dragon's disillusionment with the Marines.
This future leader of the Revolutionary Army had likely long since seen through the corruption within the Marines and the World Government—and was already beginning to stir.
Jon knew Dragon's future but had no intention of stopping him.
In Jon's view, even if Dragon didn't rebel, someone else eventually would. Besides, Dragon was not someone Jon could stop.
Moreover, the existence of the Revolutionary Army might not necessarily be a bad thing. At the very least, it could force the World Government and the Celestial Dragons to recognize that the world was changing and that people were rising to challenge their oppression.
As the anime once said, "This era is running wild."
Jon's only goal was to make himself strong enough to survive this chaotic era—strong enough to fear nothing.
"Perhaps… it's not the Marines who are wrong—it's this world itself."
With the Celestial Dragons and the corrupt World Government in power, even their subordinate organization, the Marines, could hardly avoid being tainted.
Dragon's pupils shrank as he stared at Jon in shock.
Jon's words gave him a sense of finding a kindred spirit.
"Jon… what you just said…"
Jon noticed Dragon's intense gaze and felt his heart skip a beat. He quickly replied:
"It's nothing—just a passing thought."
While Jon didn't dislike the Revolutionary Army, that didn't mean he wanted to join them. He didn't want Dragon recruiting him.
Being a Marine wasn't bad—why would he throw that away to become a revolutionary? Jon had no grand ambitions like Dragon's.
