Chapter 149: Chapter 149: Interrogating Sasuke
Leaving the Hokage's office and strolling through the lively streets of Konoha Village, Kirito carefully pondered the details of the "Orochimaru Prison Escape Incident."
First of all, Kirito was skeptical about the claim that "Orochimaru is dead."
For one, the curse mark on Anko's neck was still present, and since she was still wandering around eating sweet dumplings, it was clear that Orochimaru wasn't completely gone.
Tsunade and the others concluded that Orochimaru was dead for three main reasons:
They found Orochimaru's corpse, which had transformed into a white phosphorous snake at the scene, indicating that his body was indeed destroyed. Kabuto and the others, who had come to rescue Orochimaru, believed he was dead and hastily retreated from Konoha, leaving behind most of their subordinates, who were captured or killed. Sasuke, who chose to stay in Konoha, also confirmed Orochimaru's death.
These factors led Tsunade and the others to believe that Orochimaru, who had caused so much havoc in Konoha Village, had finally met his end there—a poetic form of retribution.
However, thanks to his knowledge of the original story, Kirito knew that Orochimaru had prepared an unusual backup plan.
Knowing this, Kirito wasn't overly concerned about Orochimaru's supposed death. What intrigued him more was why Sasuke had chosen to stay in Konoha.
Sasuke's reasoning was straightforward:
"Those people are useless. Compared to them, if Konoha can help me achieve my revenge, I don't mind staying in the village."
When Kirito saw this statement in the report, he couldn't help but silently commend Naruto's persistence: "Classic Naruto!"
Ever since Kirito and Team Seven brought Sasuke back to the village, Naruto had made it a point to visit him between training sessions, always bringing along the bento that Sakura prepared.
Although Sasuke remained aloof and distant, Naruto's daily visits eventually seemed to leave a mark. Sakura, unable to visit Sasuke herself, poured her concern into the bentos she asked Naruto to deliver, showcasing her nurturing nature.
It was likely this consistent care that ultimately influenced Sasuke's decision to stay in Konoha.
[Absorbing Orochimaru's power must have lessened Sasuke's immediate thirst for strength. Otherwise, he might have chosen to leave the village again, as he did two years ago.]
[Still, staying in the village could make him more susceptible to Konoha's kindness, dulling his resolve for revenge.]
When Kirito arrived at the temporary detention facility, he was quickly led to Sasuke's cell after explaining his purpose to the stationed ninja.
Although Sasuke had chosen to stay in Konoha, the village still kept him in confinement under the previous security measures. For Konoha, this was a generous compromise, given Sasuke's prior affiliation with Orochimaru.
During the recent attack, Kabuto's forces had unleashed numerous experimental subjects cursed with the Curse Mark. These subjects wreaked havoc across Konoha, killing many ninjas and civilians. Sasuke, by association, had drawn considerable resentment.
[If it weren't for his connection to Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi, and Tsunade, Sasuke's treatment would likely have been far harsher.]
When the cell door opened, Kirito found Sasuke sitting cross-legged on the bed, his face calm and composed.
Sasuke's room was simple—a bed, a chair, and a table with some lunch boxes on it. The plain walls were illuminated by a single incandescent lamp on the ceiling, making the cell resemble a tidy, windowless bachelor's apartment.
[This is better than the dorm I had in my previous life…] Kirito mused.
As Kirito entered, Sasuke opened his dark eyes and spoke first, breaking the silence.
"As expected, if there's someone here without a Chakra signature. It must be you," Sasuke said.
Without hesitation, Kirito pulled up a chair, sat in front of Sasuke, and met his gaze with his Byakugan. "I'm here to investigate Orochimaru's death."
Sasuke, who respected strength, especially from someone his age, responded without hostility. In fact, Sasuke seemed eager to measure his newfound power against Kirito.
"It's simple. Orochimaru is dead, and I've absorbed all of his power," Sasuke said confidently.
Orochimaru was someone Sasuke had once regarded highly, leaving the village to seek his tutelage. Orochimaru's training not only made Sasuke stronger but also exposed him to the Sannin's cunning and resilience. Now, having absorbed Orochimaru's abilities, Sasuke was brimming with confidence.
"Any more details?" Kirito asked.
Rather than explaining further, Sasuke activated his Sharingan, the three tomoes glowing blood-red.
The simple room dissolved before Kirito's eyes, replaced by the scene of a battle-scarred chamber.
In the memory, Sasuke stood before a frail, pale figure—Orochimaru, battered and visibly weakened.
"Sasuke, I need your body," Orochimaru hissed. "It's time for you to fulfill your end of the deal…"
Orochimaru's condition was pitiful, the result of prolonged torture and his weakened state before a planned body transfer.
"You're useless to me," Sasuke said coldly. "Coming here just saved me the trouble of finding you."
Zzt! Lightning crackled as Sasuke formed his Chidori Blade, thrusting it through Orochimaru's chest.
Blood dripped from Orochimaru's mouth as he grasped the blade. Sasuke sneered, "You can't even dodge this attack anymore."
"Sasuke!" Orochimaru roared, angered at his vessel's supposed betrayal. Weak but unwilling to submit, Orochimaru enacted his plan.
A massive white phosphorous snake burst from Orochimaru's mouth, lunging toward Sasuke. Sasuke attempted to swing his blade to cut it down but found the Chidori Blade pinned by Orochimaru's body.
Dodging the snake's attack, Sasuke narrowly avoided being swallowed. But as the snake slithered past, its body erupted into countless smaller serpents, coiling around Sasuke like living chains.
Zzt! Sasuke discharged lightning to cut through the serpents, but the floor was soon littered with snake corpses.
Hovering in the corner, Orochimaru grinned. "Sasuke, become part of me!"
"Keep dreaming!" Sasuke spat, slashing through more snakes. But as the battle dragged on, his movements faltered, his body weakening.
"Hahaha… My blood carries a paralyzing toxin," Orochimaru gloated. "Now, surrender yourself to me!"
As Sasuke struggled to resist, countless serpents coiled around him, ensnaring him completely.
