Chapter 428: Chapter 428: Old Thief, Lend Me Your Head

The Third Hokage questioned himself: What do I owe him? But Shimura Danzo had no doubt.

"What do you owe me? You owe me too much!"

"I will come back," Danzo declared after a long, hard look at the Third Hokage. Gritting his teeth, he turned and left.

Danzo was filled with worry. He hadn't secured what he valued most, and even though this was an opportunity to escape, he knew trouble awaited him. The rift between him and Shinki had grown irreconcilable. If he stayed, Shinki would undoubtedly come for him.

Moreover, as one of the key beneficiaries of the corruption in the village, Danzo knew he'd be sacrificed to placate the anger of the villagers and the Daimyo.

Damn it, he cursed inwardly. I wanted to be Hokage, not the scapegoat!

Danzo's departure seemed to loosen the last string of tension within the Third Hokage. Now, all he had to do was wait for Tsunade to return and deliver her judgment. Danzo's parting words didn't weigh heavily on him.

He understood Danzo's ambitions, but it was clear that those dreams were never going to come to fruition.

The Third Hokage also doubted Danzo's ability to escape unscathed. Shinki's influence ran deep within Konoha, and his puppets were likely stationed at every key exit.

Still, the Hokage had done all he could. Warning Danzo in advance was the extent of his help. Actively assisting him would only invite retribution upon the Sarutobi clan.

Family or Danzo? The Third Hokage chose his family. Helping Danzo escape was too great a risk; it would mean certain retaliation from Shinki or Tsunade.

The Sarutobi clan would be targeted, in the open or in the shadows. I've seen it happen to other clans, and it would happen to mine too.

The Hokage sighed. Danzo's survival was now entirely up to him.

Meanwhile, Danzo fumed as he navigated the village's secret passage.

Damn you, Sarutobi. You'll regret this!

Danzo couldn't believe the Third Hokage's indifference. Why hadn't he arranged for an escort or an excuse to get him out safely? Instead, he was forced to flee alone, like a rat.

Fine. If I must go, I'll return stronger. This isn't the end.

As he approached the hidden exit, Danzo carefully observed his surroundings. This secret passage had been his creation, meant for emergencies. He couldn't risk using routes monitored by ANBU or the Hokage's guards.

Danzo lifted a thick wooden board covering the passage and slipped through, carefully replacing it behind him. He moved quickly but cautiously through the night, his thoughts racing.

But then, several pairs of glowing green eyes appeared in the darkness.

Damn it! Shinki!

The distinctive green flames of Shinki's puppets lit up the night. Danzo froze, his instincts screaming at him to flee, but the eyes multiplied, surrounding him.

"Danzo, where are you going?"

At the entrance of the hidden passage stood Shinki, smiling faintly as he watched Danzo flounder.

"You made preparations? So did I. Did you think I'd let you escape?"

Danzo's heart sank. Shinki's puppets had been lying in wait, stationed strategically throughout the village. There was no way out.

"Shinki! Do you mean to kill me?" Danzo shouted, his voice trembling with a mix of fear and rage.

"The villagers' anger needs a scapegoat. I'll lend them your head," Shinki replied coldly, his eyes glinting like a predator toying with its prey.

Danzo's face twisted with fury. "I should have killed you when I had the chance, you wretched brat! You lowly branch family scum!"

A gasp echoed from the darkness.

Danzo stiffened. He realized too late that Shinki's puppets weren't the only ones present. There were others watching—listening.

Several figures emerged from the shadows: Nara Shikashin, Hyuga Hiashi, and Uchiha Fugaku.

Hiashi coughed slightly, stepping forward. Danzo's eyes narrowed, trying to process what he was seeing.

"You insult the Hyuga branch family while running from the consequences of your actions?" Hiashi's tone was icy, his expression severe.

Shinki tilted his head, feigning surprise. "Did you just call me lowly? Me?" He pointed at himself with mock incredulity.

Danzo glared, his mind racing for a way out. He was surrounded, not just by Shinki's puppets but by Konoha's elite.

"Danzo," Shinki said, his voice dripping with disdain. "This isn't a trial. It's an execution. You've betrayed the village for the last time."

Danzo's hands clenched into fists. He knew there was no escape. Still, he refused to go down without a fight.

"This village will regret letting you take charge," he spat, his voice shaking with anger. "Mark my words, you'll destroy everything Konoha stands for!"

Shinki's expression didn't waver. He simply gestured to his puppets, their green eyes burning brighter in the dark.

"Goodbye, Danzo."
