Chapter 363: Chapter 363: Mitokado Homura – "I Don’t Owe You Anything, Danzo"

No one listens when I talk. Once I finish, everyone changes the subject. Even when I allow myself to interrupt, decisions are made as if I'm not even here.

Do you really think I'm just a decoration?

Koharu Utatane was fuming.

Seeing her anger, Mitokado Homura stood up and quickly left the office.

How considerate of you, Homura!

The Third Hokage watched his old friend leave with an exasperated expression. Unfortunately, Homura showed no intention of staying and walked away even faster. Left with no choice, the Hokage turned back to comfort Koharu himself.

"Ahem, Koharu, is there something else you'd like to discuss?" he asked cautiously.

"Yes, Hiruzen! You've disappointed me too! You act as though I'm unqualified to sit in the council meetings, that my suggestions aren't worth considering. Are you ignoring me as well?" Koharu lashed out.

"No! Absolutely not! I promise!" Hiruzen Sarutobi denied quickly, knowing he was treading on dangerous ground.

When a woman is angry, logic goes out the window, he thought helplessly.

Mitokado Homura's Exit

As Koharu ranted on, Hiruzen sat silently, his patience wearing thin. Meanwhile, Homura had already left the Hokage's office and glanced back at the building with a look of pity.

"Sorry, old friend," he muttered under his breath. "You deal with her. I'm out of here."

Pulling his cloak tighter, he quickly made his way home.

An Encounter in the Shadows

On his way, Homura sensed someone watching him. He stopped in his tracks, alert.

"Your awareness has improved, Homura," said a familiar voice as Shimura Danzo stepped out of the shadows.

"Danzo? What do you want?" Homura asked, surprised that Danzo had sought him out.

Danzo ignored the question and asked instead, "Do you feel safe, even in the village?"

Homura chuckled dryly. "After being ambushed by an entire squad of enemies, including a Kazekage, and barely escaping with my life, anyone would become more cautious. But if you're asking whether I feel threatened by you, the answer is no. You wouldn't dare attack me—not here in the village, surrounded by Shinki's surveillance puppets. The consequences would be disastrous, even for you."

Danzo's face darkened. He knew Homura was right. Any attempt to harm him within the village would backfire spectacularly.

"You've changed," Danzo said after a long pause.

Homura adjusted his glasses and replied, "People change, Danzo. You, Hiruzen, and Koharu included. Your ambition has grown, while Hiruzen has become more indecisive. Koharu? She's the same—arrogant and unreasonable."

Danzo's expression remained blank, though Homura's words clearly hit their mark.

A Favor Denied

"Enough of this. What do you want from me?" Homura asked, cutting to the chase.

Danzo hesitated before stating his request. "I need your help. Just this once."

Homura immediately shook his head. "No. I've already helped you enough. I don't owe you anything, Danzo."

"Are you just going to let Shinki take control of the village?" Danzo snapped.

Homura raised an eyebrow, amused. "Control? Is that what you think this is? Hiruzen is still the Hokage, and Shinki is merely the ANBU Commander. Perhaps you should think carefully about what you want to achieve, Danzo. And let me warn you—if you continue with your reckless schemes, Shinki won't hesitate to eliminate you. Not even Hiruzen will protect you then."

Danzo bristled but said nothing.

"Ambition must be tempered with caution, Danzo. Remember that."

A Parting Shot

As Homura walked away, Danzo called after him. "Your family has benefited from the village. Do you think Tsunade will let you go when she becomes Hokage?"

Homura stopped, turned, and smirked. "The ones who benefited the most are Sarutobi and Shimura. If Tsunade decides to revisit old accounts, your family will be the first in her sights. As for my family, we can repay any debts to the village treasury at any time. Can you say the same?"

Homura's words left Danzo speechless.

"Instead of threatening me, Danzo, you should be worrying about your own house. That is, if you even care about the Shimura clan's future."

With that, Homura walked away, leaving Danzo to stew in his own thoughts.

A man with ambition must learn to restrain himself. Otherwise, his ambition will be his undoing.
