Chapter 147: Chapter 147: False Hopes
"You're next!" Two Akira closed in from opposite sides, surrounding Nagato with precision.
Nagato's expression darkened. This battle... he'd lost.
Uchiha Akira's ocular techniques were terrifying—whether it was his space-time jutsu or those clones indistinguishable from his true body. Each was an overwhelming force in its own right.
Nagato understood clearly—if the fight continued, the one to die would undoubtedly be him.
"Enough," Nagato thought bitterly. "Although I failed to destroy Konoha, the objective of collecting the Tailed Beasts has been achieved." As the two Akira advanced, Nagato's eyes flickered with determination. He had made up his mind to retreat.
Fixing a cold glare on Akira, Nagato sneered, "Fine, I'll concede this round to you!"
"Heh..." Akira chuckled. "You sound reluctant. If that's the case, why not stay and finish me off? Wouldn't that guarantee your victory?"
Nagato let out a cold snort. "I'll kill you eventually. That day isn't far off."
"Fire Style: Hiding in Ash and Dust!"
In the next instant, Nagato opened his mouth and spewed out a thick, dark gray cloud of smoke, quickly enveloping a radius of hundreds of meters.
"Wind Style: Gale Palm!"
The two Akira acted in unison, conjuring fierce winds that swept across the battlefield. Within mere breaths, the smoke dissipated.
"Shinra Tensei!"
A visible shockwave, shimmering faintly with white light, burst out from Nagato and Hanzo at its epicenter, rippling outward in all directions.
Grabbing Hanzo's shoulder, Nagato utilized the repulsive force of the Shinra Tensei to launch them skyward. The pair shot through the air like streaks of light, vanishing from Akira's sight in the blink of an eye.
Watching them escape, Akira felt no significant disappointment.
(T/N: In case anyone forgot - The left eye governed the summoning of past selves, a power distinct from the right.)
In a situation where Nagato had chosen to retreat, killing him was exceptionally difficult.
The reason he hadn't summoned his Future Body alongside his Past Body to aid in battle was simple—his ocular power couldn't sustain such consumption. Just summoning the Past Body had already pushed him to his limit.
"Still," Akira thought, "this battle served its purpose." He glanced around the ravaged battlefield with satisfaction.
Taking out a flare, he ignited it and fired it into the sky before beginning to clean up. Severed body parts scattered from the intense battle were absorbed into his Kamui space.
When he reached the spot where the Eight-Tails had been, his face darkened.
Amid the rubble, a hidden tunnel came into view.
"Did Killer B escape?" His expression grew stormy. Neither he nor Nagato had noticed this.
Then again, even Otsutsuki Momoshiki, with his Byakugan, couldn't detect it in the original timeline.
The Eight-Tails' ability to sever its own tail and survive was both extraordinary and well-concealed.
Akira was certain he'd killed the real Eight-Tails earlier. If it had merely severed its tail, its true form would have been revealed the moment it died.
In other words, the Eight-Tails had left a portion of its tail within Killer B, ensuring his survival. Under the Eight-Tails' cover, Killer B had likely escaped through the underground passage.
The flare exploded high in the sky, and soon, numerous Konoha shinobi arrived on the scene.
A Jonin from the Uchiha clan approached Akira.
"Akira, how did it go? Were the enemies eliminated?"
"No," Akira replied, shaking his head. He gestured toward the tunnel. "Killer B might have escaped. Head toward Kumogakure and see if there's any trace of him. Capture any surviving Kumogakure ninja if you can."
A group of Uchiha shinobi immediately rallied.
"Let's go! Capture those brats from Kumogakure!"
"Hah! Beating them while they're down is the best!"
"Move, move! Maybe we'll even nab someone important!"
The Konoha shinobi charged toward the direction of Kumogakure with enthusiasm.
Earlier, they'd witnessed Uchiha Akira's Perfect Susano'o unleash a devastating slash on the Kumogakure forces. Such an attack was bound to leave countless casualties.
Against such overwhelming power, most ordinary ninja stood no chance.
Meanwhile, Hiruzen, supported by medical-nin, approached Akira with a warm smile.
"Akira, how did the battle go?"
"The Fourth Raikage's status is unknown. The Two-Tails was absorbed by the Gedo Statue summoned by Nagato. The Eight-Tails severed its tail to help Killer B escape, but the beast itself is dead. Part of it was also absorbed by the Gedo Statue. Nagato and his puppet have withdrawn from the battlefield," Akira summarized.
"Good, good!" Hiruzen nodded repeatedly, his face lighting up with relief.
Suddenly remembering something, he asked, "Akira, are you all right?"
"I'm fine," Akira replied calmly. "Just chakra and ocular fatigue. I'll recover soon."
"That's good to hear. Rest up. Leave the cleanup to us," Hiruzen said firmly.
"Understood." Akira nodded before disappearing into thin air.
Watching the spot where Akira vanished, Hiruzen sighed.
"Space-time ninjutsu… the speed is incredible."
Inside the Kamui dimension, Akira's face was clouded with frustration.
"How could such a massive Gedo Statue vanish just like that?"
"So even the Kamui dimension can't prevent Nagato's summoning jutsu? Tch!" Akira was irked. He had thought this battle would be a decisive victory.
Even if Nagato survived, securing the Gedo Statue would have been a significant gain.
But to his astonishment, despite transferring the statue to his Kamui space, it had still been summoned away.
"Summoning jutsu surpasses my expectations... The Kamui dimension is essentially another world entirely," Akira muttered, shaking his head in frustration.
In the spot where the statue had stood, scattered fragments of flesh and debris remained.
Among them were three sizable chunks:
One was a leg from the Two-Tails, severed by his Kamui Shuriken.
Another was the hind portion of the Eight-Tails, cleaved off by his Kamui Raikiri.
The last was an arm from the Gedo Statue, along with part of its shoulder, cut off during his attempt to interrupt its absorption.
"So the only ones who suffered from this battle were Kumogakure?" Akira chuckled dryly, looking at the remnants.
"I need to recover my chakra first. Then, I'll head to Kumogakure and bring this war to an end," he thought.
It wasn't that he didn't want to move now. His exhaustion was simply too great—he had to recover first.
