Chapter 146: Chapter 146: A Request from Mirai I Can't Refuse

Looking down at the kneeling Gekko Hayate, Mirai made no further moves.

He bore no personal grudge against Hayate, but Uzuki Yugao was the woman he had his eye on. Teaching Hayate a lesson like this was simply Mirai's way of making his intentions clear.

As compensation…

Mirai would ensure Hayate survived at least until the Hayate Arc. Of course, that would only happen if Hayate stayed obedient and kept his distance from Yugao.

Mirai had no aspirations to be a good person.

Reincarnating into this world and gaining absolute power, Mirai wasn't about to hold back or compromise himself.

"Yugao, let's go."

Returning the bone blade to Yugao, Mirai firmly took hold of her slender wrist and led her away.

"Eh? Mirai-sama…" Yugao hesitated, glancing back at Hayate before bowing her head and hurriedly following Mirai out of the training grounds.

At the dango shop, Mirai bought ten skewers of tri-color dango. When he placed them in front of Yugao, he noticed she hadn't moved to eat.

"Yugao, why aren't you eating?" he asked, puzzled.

"Mirai-sama… you're still holding my hand…"

"Ha?!" Mirai exclaimed in surprise, immediately releasing her soft hand. "Yugao, I didn't even realize…"

"If you noticed earlier, you should've said something!" he added, feigning annoyance. Then, with a smirk, he continued, "But I can't blame you—very few girls can resist my charm."

"This time, let's just call it even. But don't let it happen again."

Yugao couldn't help but laugh, covering her mouth as she teased, "Mirai-sama, Anko was right—you really do have the potential to become a womanizer."

The awkwardness between them faded, replaced by a lighthearted atmosphere.

"Mirai-sama, you really scared me back there," Yugao admitted.

"Scared you? How?"

"When you confronted Hayate, I genuinely thought you were going to cut him down with a single strike," she said, shuddering as she recalled the earlier scene. "That slash was terrifying."

After a brief pause, Yugao asked curiously, "Were you really angry just now?"

Mirai scoffed lightly, shaking his head. "What kind of strong person gets angry over an insect?"

Yugao thought about it and nodded. It made sense—someone like Mirai wouldn't lose his temper over a few provocations from Hayate.

Still, she muttered under her breath, "Hayate isn't usually like this… I don't know what got into him today."

Hearing that, Mirai stopped walking and turned to her with a faint smile.

"Yugao, as long as I'm standing next to you, I'm afraid 99% of men would find me unbearable."

"…"

Yugao froze, staring into Mirai's dark, clear eyes.

Was this… a confession?

Her ears burned as the redness spread from her face to her neck.

She had never imagined that happiness would come so suddenly. The person she admired the most had said something so… intimate.

How was she supposed to respond? Should she accept right away? Or play it cool?

What should they name their future children…?

"Yugao, I want you to serve as my personal bodyguard from now on," Mirai suddenly declared.

"Huh?"

Snapped out of her daydream, Yugao blinked in confusion.

"Bodyguard?"

Mirai nodded. "That's right."

"But… I'm currently a member of the ANBU," she said hesitantly. "My duty is to follow the Hokage's orders and protect the village."

"That's not something you need to worry about," Mirai replied casually.

"But the Hokage…" Yugao trailed off, unsure.

Mirai leaned in close, his breath tickling her ear as he whispered, "The Third Hokage has been detained for endangering the village. Right now, I'm in charge of Konoha. Before long, I'll officially become Hokage."

Yugao's eyes widened in shock.

The Third Hokage… detained?

How could she not know about this? Wasn't Nara Shikaku merely acting on his behalf due to health reasons?

Mirai continued, his tone serious. "To avoid causing panic, the truth has been classified. Only a few people are aware of the situation. I'm telling you this because I trust you, Yugao."

She swallowed hard, glancing around nervously before nodding cautiously.

The Hokage, imprisoned…

What was going on?

As an ANBU, she should have been mobilized to protect the Hokage, yet neither her superiors nor her comrades had made any moves.

Such a monumental event had passed without so much as a ripple.

One word surfaced in her mind: Coup.

Mirai had orchestrated a coup against the Third Hokage without anyone noticing!

The realization left her both shocked and strangely honored.

Mirai trusted her enough to share this secret.

"Yugao, the truth will come to light soon," he assured her. "The Hokage and his faction have been working against the village's interests for far too long. You'll understand in time."

"I trust you," Yugao said earnestly. "I won't breathe a word of this to anyone."

Satisfied, Mirai nodded. "So, will you accept the role of my bodyguard?"

Yugao hesitated. "Mirai-sama, I'm afraid my strength isn't enough to protect someone like you."

"You misunderstand," Mirai replied with a faint smile. "A bodyguard doesn't need to be stronger than me. That's impossible, anyway. What I need is someone to handle day-to-day matters for me."

Yugao's cheeks flushed again as she murmured, "Day-to-day… matters…"

"I… I can't refuse Mirai-sama's request, but… please wait until I'm a little older," she stammered.

Mirai stared at her, bewildered. Why did it feel like she'd completely misunderstood him?

Could it be Anko's fault for spreading ridiculous rumors?

He sighed inwardly. The next time he saw her, he'd make sure to teach her a lesson—maybe even spank her.
