Chapter 344: 343-Excuses

The sunlight filtered through the tall windows of the Raikage's office, casting long streaks of golden light across the polished floor, but the warmth of the day was lost in the oppressive tension that filled the room. The advisors, a mix of seasoned shinobi and veteran strategists, stood silently, their eyes flitting between each other like trapped animals.

At the head of the room sat the Third Raikage, A, his colossal frame radiating barely restrained fury. His piercing gaze swept over the group like a hawk scanning for prey, and his voice exploded like a lightning strike.

"What do you mean we have lost a Jinchūriki?!" the Raikage roared, his voice reverberating through the chamber with the force of thunder.

The gathered men froze, each one instinctively holding their breath. The only sounds were the shuffling of sandals on the wooden floor. Even the rustling of papers on the shattered remains of the desk seemed subdued under the weight of the accusation.

Finally, Ay, the Raikage's son, stepped forward. Despite his impressive stature and composure, even he seemed smaller in the shadow of his father's rage. His deep voice carried evenly, though a slight edge betrayed his unease.

"Father," he began, "we haven't lost her. She's still alive, but… her condition is critical. Our healers… they've done everything they can, but she isn't responding to their treatments."

The Raikage leaned forward, his immense hands gripping the edge of his desk so tightly that the wood groaned under the pressure. His golden bracers gleamed in the light, their intricate designs doing little to soften the menace radiating from him.

"What is the difference?" he growled, his tone low but as sharp as a blade. Without waiting for an answer, he slammed his hand down on the desk.

"Crack!"

The desk shattered instantly, the force of the blow sending shards of wood flying across the room. Several advisors flinched violently, instinctively stepping back. One man even let out a muffled gasp before quickly silencing himself.

Ay, though unshaken outwardly, felt the crackle of tension ripple through his body like a jolt of electricity.

"How is it possible," the Raikage bellowed, "that Kumogakure, the mightiest of the great villages, allowed a Jinchūriki—a weapon—to be brought to this state?!"

One of the advisors, a wiry man with a receding hairline, hesitated before speaking. His voice was quiet but carried a quaver of nervousness. "Lord Raikage… she was a new Jinchūriki. It's possible she wasn't yet fully adept at wielding Matatabi's power in battle."

"An excuse!" A snarled, his fiery gaze locking onto the man, who immediately looked down, cowed by the intensity of the glare. "She was trained, was she not?"

"Yes, Lord Raikage," the man replied quickly, his words tripping over themselves. "She was."

"Then how," A thundered, his voice crashing over the room like a storm, "did this happen?"

The oppressive silence that followed was deafening. The advisors glanced at one another, their faces betraying their uncertainty. No one wanted to meet the Raikage's gaze, let alone step forward with an answer. Finally, Sakiko, a battle-worn shinobi with streaks of silver in his hair, took a step forward. His voice, though calm, carried the weight of experience.

"May I speak, Lord Raikage?"

The Raikage's burning eyes locked onto Sakiko. For a moment, the room was still. Then, with a curt nod, A gestured for him to continue.

Sakiko squared his shoulders. "I was the one who found her, my lord. I also witnessed the battle."

A's expression darkened further, his jaw tightening. "You stood back and watched as your own daughter was attacked by a Konoha scum?"

Sakiko hesitated, the faintest flicker of pain crossing his face, but he held his ground. "I had faith in her abilities, Lord Raikage. She has trained for this moment. While I am disappointed she couldn't prevail, I must acknowledge the truth: her opponent was far stronger than we anticipated."

The Raikage's brow furrowed as intrigue began to temper his rage. He leaned forward slightly, his massive frame casting a long shadow over the room. "How so?"

"The opponent," Sakiko continued, his voice steady, "was an Uchiha, my lord. Not just any Uchiha—he was able to control Tani, even if only for a brief moment. And he wielded chains that suppressed Matatabi's chakra entirely. It was a bad match for her… perhaps for any Jinchūriki."

A ripple of unease spread through the room. The advisors murmured amongst themselves, their expressions ranging from disbelief to fear. The mention of an Uchiha brought with it the weight of a dark history, and though no one spoke the name, the specter of Madara lingered in everyone's thoughts.

The Raikage drummed his fingers against the remnants of his desk, his sharp gaze locked on Sakiko. His voice, though quieter, carried a chilling weight. "Chains… Ay, does this sound familiar to you?"

Ay stepped forward, his expression grim. "Yes, Father. The intelligence we received from that source mentioned a figure matching this description. He was last seen heading toward the Land of Lightning."

"And the squad we sent after him?" the Raikage asked, his voice like the crackle of distant thunder.

Ay hesitated for a fraction of a second. "We haven't heard from them, my lord."

The Raikage leaned back in his chair, his massive hands resting on the armrests as his expression hardened further. "Then they're dead," he concluded, his tone leaving no room for argument.

The room fell silent once more, the weight of the Raikage's words pressing down on everyone present. After a long pause, the Raikage spat, "Konoha now has a bastard strong enough to take on a Jinchūriki, survive, and nearly kill them. This cannot go unanswered."

Sakiko stepped forward again, his voice calm but purposeful. "Lord Raikage, while this situation is far from ideal, there is a way we can turn it to our advantage."

The Raikage's eyes narrowed, and a faint smirk began to tug at the corner of his lips. "I'm listening."

High above the Land of Fire, Renjiro rode on Tenjin's back, the cool wind rushing past him. The vast expanse of the sky stretched in all directions, the clouds rolling by like waves on an endless sea.

Renjiro's thoughts lingered on his recent discovery—his chakra reserves had increased. A sense of satisfaction warmed him despite the soreness that still racked his body.

"Still basking in your newfound strength, are you?" Tenjin's voice broke through his thoughts, laced with dry amusement.

Renjiro blinked, brought back to the present. "Can you blame me? My reserves increased by half—it's not every day something like this happens."

Tenjin chuckled. "True, but don't let it get to your head. We're approaching Konoha."

Renjiro straightened slightly, his gaze sharpening. "Already?"

"Yes," Tenjin replied, his wings flapping powerfully. "We'll be there soon."

Renjiro frowned in thought. "I still want to keep my summoning ability a secret. Can you drop me off a few kilometers from the gates?"

"As you wish," Tenjin said, his voice tinged with pride. "But don't think I'll let you summon me just for transport next time."

Renjiro smirked. "Noted."

Tenjin descended gracefully, his massive wings stirring the air as they approached the edge of a dense forest. Renjiro leapt off as they neared the ground, landing with a wince as his sore muscles protested the movement.

"Take care, Renjiro," Tenjin said, his voice softer now.

With a burst of smoke, Tenjin disappeared, leaving Renjiro alone in the forest.

Renjiro reached into one of his storage seals, retrieving a mask and a dark cloak. The mask was simple but effective, concealing his identity. Draping the cloak over his shoulders, he took a deep breath and activated his chakra, flickering forward despite the dull ache that coursed through his body.

As the familiar gates of Konoha came into view, a wave of relief washed over him. He stepped through the gates, the bustling village greeting him like an old friend.
