Chapter 343: 342-Failure

The faint glow of Renjiro's green flames lingered on the battlefield, licking the charred ground like restless phantoms as dawn began to stretch its golden fingers across the horizon. Amidst the remnants of chaos and destruction, a solitary figure stood, watching. The figure's face was obscured, shrouded in shadows even as the light crept closer. Silent and unmoving, he surveyed the scene with an air of cold detachment.

From the distance came a piercing scream, raw and desperate.

"Aaaargh!"

The voice belonged to Tani. Her cries cut through the stillness, filled with agony and frustration as the burning adamantine chains coiled around her body. Her massive Matatabi form, once a fierce and imposing sight, now lay restrained and flickering. The chains pulsed with green flames, each flare siphoning away her chakra and weakening her further.

The figure turned his head slightly toward the sound, his posture deliberate, and began walking. His steps were measured, echoing softly against the scorched ground as he approached the pinned-down Jinchūriki.

Tani thrashed against her bonds, her feline eyes blazing with fury and desperation. She channeled chakra in frantic bursts, trying to break free, but the chains only tightened their grip.

"Come on… Come on!" she growled, her voice tinged with both determination and despair.

Her three Matatabi clones, crackling with remnants of lightning, shimmered and buzzed. With a final, faltering flicker, they disintegrated into harmless sparks, leaving Tani alone.

"No… No, no, no!" she whimpered, the realization of her plight dawning upon her.

The immense strain of maintaining her Matatabi form began to take its toll. Her fiery aura dimmed, her form flickering like a candle in the wind. Slowly, against her will, Tani reverted to her human form. She slumped forward, her body trembling, yet the chains refused to relinquish their hold.

Her screams subsided into broken sobs, her voice hoarse and weak. As she lifted her head, her tear-streaked face caught sight of the figure now standing over her. Relief washed over her features as recognition dawned.

"P-please…" she croaked, her voice barely audible. "Help… Help me…"

The figure remained still, his gaze cold and unfeeling. His eyes, hidden in the dim light, bore into her, offering no solace, no warmth.

Tani's breathing hitched as his silence stretched into an eternity. Finally, with deliberate slowness, he raised a hand. A surge of chakra coursed through the air, sharp and commanding.

"Clang!"

The chains shattered like brittle glass, dissolving into faint embers that scattered on the breeze.

Tani gasped as the pressure binding her disappeared. She pushed herself onto her knees, trembling but grateful.

"Th-thank you—"

Her words were cut short as the figure struck her nape with a swift, calculated motion. Tani's body went limp, her consciousness slipping away before she could finish her sentence.

"Failure," the man muttered under his breath, his voice low and brimming with disdain.

He bent down, lifting her effortlessly and draping her over his shoulder. His movements were efficient, devoid of care or concern. For a moment, he stood there, gazing down at the battlefield with a mixture of disappointment and calculation.

"Her control over Matatabi is pathetic," he murmured, his tone sharper now, almost as if addressing himself. "But Kumogakure will recover. If we must replace her, we will. Perhaps Yugito Nii will suffice. Though she is only a toddler now"

He turned his gaze to the horizon, where the first light of dawn illuminated the distant peaks.

"But first," he added, a faint sneer curling his lips as he glanced at Tani's unconscious form, "I need to deal with this."

With that, he disappeared in a blur, leaving the battlefield behind.

The warmth of the mid-morning sun roused Renjiro from his unconscious state. His eyelids fluttered, the brightness piercing even through closed eyes. A gentle breeze tousled his hair, carrying with it the faint scent of the open sky.

"Ugh…" Renjiro groaned, squinting as he slowly opened his eyes. The world around him was a blur, soft shapes and shifting colors dancing in his vision. He could make out the vast expanse of the sky and the tufts of clouds moving alongside him.

"Where… am I?" he muttered, his voice groggy.

His entire body ached, every muscle protesting even the slightest movement. The soreness was all-encompassing, a reminder of the battle he had barely survived. A dull pain throbbed behind his eyes, and though his Sharingan was inactive, he could feel its lingering strain.

Renjiro blinked several times, his vision gradually sharpening. He realized he was atop a massive bird, its powerful wings slicing through the air with rhythmic grace.

Then it hit him.

Memories of his fight with Tani flooded back with vivid intensity. The swirling chaos, the relentless attacks, the oppressive weight of the Susanoo—each detail surged into his mind like a tidal wave.

"I was stupid," Renjiro muttered, smacking his forehead with the palm of his hand.

Why had he pushed himself so far? The fight had been reckless, borderline suicidal. He had willingly faced a jinchuriki and Tailed Beast, a force of nature that could obliterate entire landscapes.

"What was I thinking?" he berated himself, his voice tinged with self-reproach. "I should've just escaped when I had the chance."

Renjiro clenched his fists, frustration bubbling within him.

'It was a Tailed Beast,' he thought bitterly. 'What made me think the odds were in my favour?'

He sighed heavily, allowing the thoughts to settle. There was more to fighting a Tailed Beast than the immediate danger. Engaging with one, especially a Jinchūriki from another village, was fraught with political ramifications.

'Messing with her wasn't just about risking my life,' he reflected. 'It could've sparked something far worse—a political nightmare for Konoha. Killing her would've been out of the question.'

Pinning her down had been the best option, even if Renjiro could do more as he was on his last breath. Subduing her without taking her life had minimized the risk of escalating tensions between their villages.

Renjiro exhaled slowly, calming his racing thoughts. "Still…" he murmured, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "At least I know I can use Genjutsu on a Tailed Beast, even if only for a short while."

"Huh? What was that?"

The voice startled Renjiro, pulling him from his thoughts.

"Tenjin?" he asked, immediately recognizing the familiar tone.

"Yes, it's me," the lightning eagle replied, a trace of amusement in its voice. "Have you already forgotten about me?"

Renjiro frowned, confused. "How…?"

"What do you mean, 'how'? You were the one who summoned me!" Tenjin replied with mock indignation.

Renjiro opened his mouth to protest but stopped abruptly. Something felt… different. He closed his eyes, focusing inward, and then he felt it—a surge of energy coursing through his body. His chakra reserves were fuller than before.

His eyes widened in realization. "My reserves…" he whispered, awestruck.

Tenjin chuckled. "You're not imagining it."

Renjiro flexed his fingers, feeling the renewed flow of chakra within him. "They've increased…"

He stared at the horizon, the corners of his mouth lifting in a mixture of relief and disbelief.

"My reserves have increased by half," he muttered, the weight of his words sinking in. He could not believe it!
