CHAPTER 1
Chapter 1
The child’s door was firmly shut.
“… … .”
Beyond the thick door, an awful silence lingered, as if no one were inside the room.
“Claude, Claude? Please open the door, yeah?”
The servants of the Duchess of Ambrosia knocked anxiously, calling out their master’s name.
However, the child stubbornly locked the door and showed no response.
“Claude!”
The servants, who were growing more anxious, called out the child’s name in a firmer voice. Then, a faint, tearful voice was heard from inside.
“I hate it… … .”
“Oh my God, Claude!”
The child’s first response brought the servants a fleeting sense of relief, but it didn’t last long. Soon, the heart-wrenching sobs of a child who had been holding back his emotions filled the air.
“No, no, no! Waaaaah!”
The servants could sense the strong determination in their young master’s voice.
Perhaps that heavy door would not open today.
“You’re not my mother…”
“Because my mother hates me…”
“What are you saying, Claude? That’s not true.”
“I don’t need anything but my mom! I don’t need a nanny!”
“Claude!”
“Huh! No, no!”
The once-quiet room was now filled with the sounds of the child’s sorrowful cries. The servants, unable to do anything, swallowed their frustration and despair.
Claude, who had never cried so much before, made the unfamiliar situation even more difficult for the servants. Eventually, their gazes fell upon one particular maid.
‘Why did you say such nonsense to Claude?!’
The maid, now the subject of their resentment, merely snorted and turned her head away.
“Hmph!”
Her name was May Chenballion, the seventh daughter of Baron Chenballion, a vassal family of the Duke of Ambrosia.
Unlike the other servants, May’s pride was sky-high. She stuck closely to the young master, constantly whispering in his ear.
It was obvious what she must have said this time.
‘Someone is coming to replace Claude’s mother!’
The servants shook their heads regretfully.
If only the butler and the head maid were here, May wouldn’t dare act so arrogantly.
However, they had gone to meet the Duke of Ambrosia, who had left for the Imperial Palace meeting, and had yet to return.
For now, the servants could only try to persuade Claude despite their rising frustration.
“Go away. I… I hate you!”
Sob, sniff.
The child’s heartbroken sobs continued behind the closed door, leaving the servants helpless.
“… … .”
Sarah Millen silently observed the entire situation.
‘This is difficult from the start.’
She had been tense and unable to sleep since the previous night. Fighting through a throbbing headache, she raised her hand.
“It seems young master Claude is not yet mentally prepared. Perhaps I should come back another day?”
“…!”
The servants violently shook their heads, their desperate eyes pleading with Sarah.
‘Please do something!’
It was as if they were looking at her for salvation.
After all, Sarah Millen was no ordinary woman. She was known as the “Lady’s Textbook” in the Crombell Empire, and even the Emperor had bowed his head to request her help in educating the princess.
Despite being unmarried, she had been personally promised the title of count by the Emperor himself, an honor unheard of for an unmarried woman.
That was Sarah Millen.
“Count Millen, we are ashamed to ask for your help. Our young master, Claude, is not usually this stubborn, but he must be feeling nervous.”
The servants forced an eager smile, hoping for Sarah’s assistance.
Their pride was wounded, but fulfilling their master’s orders to introduce Sarah to Claude was more important.
“…”
Sarah sighed quietly.
She understood the servants’ predicament, but she was equally perplexed.
‘The novel has changed. Why now?’
Claude Ambrosia.
The unfortunate male lead who, according to legend, “ate his mother” at birth.
He was the male protagonist of Flower of Darkness, destined to grow into the darkness that would one day destroy the empire.
That was the fate of the weeping child who now locked himself behind the door.
Claude Ambrosia was doomed to succumb to the cursed power of darkness inherited from the Duke of Ambrosia, only to be saved by Elena Prieston, the heroine who would appear far in the future.
Until then, he would despise himself and descend further into madness, ultimately leading to his father’s tragic death.
Claude Ambrosia was supposed to be unhappy, becoming engulfed by darkness to satisfy his twisted desires.
At least, that’s how it was written in the novel Flower of Darkness.
Sarah had come here to prevent Claude from succumbing to darkness.
‘It’s okay. Claude hasn’t completely despaired yet. But why?’
In the novel, the male protagonist craved blind affection from his nanny, Sarah, due to his hunger for love.
Sarah had expected Claude to run into her arms today, but instead, he rejected her so sorrowfully.
‘Why did the story change so suddenly?’
She sighed and rubbed her aching temples.
“Since young master Claude has rejected me… … .”
Just as she was about to leave, May, who had been observing with her sharp snake-like eyes, stepped forward with a smug smile.
“Well, I suppose it’s my turn now?”
The servants looked at May uneasily, wary of her arrogance.
No matter how much she had ingratiated herself with Claude, they feared she might overstep her bounds with Sarah Millen.
Their concerns were soon confirmed.
“But what should I call you? Miss Millen? Lady Millen?”
“May!”
The servants shouted her name in shock, but May paid them no heed and continued speaking.
“Claude only listens to me, after all. So why not leave the nanny’s role to me? Then things wouldn’t have been such a pain. Right, Lady Millen?”
May deliberately ignored Sarah’s prestigious title, likely feeling confident after Claude’s rejection.
“May! Watch your words!”
The servants were appalled at May’s disrespect.
Sarah Millen was not someone a mere maid should insult.
In the duke’s household, May might hold some favor with the young master, but outside these walls, she had no standing against Sarah Millen.
“Do you really think you can do better? If so, go ahead and try!”
“…!”
Sarah watched silently as May confronted the desperate servants. Slowly, she straightened her posture, realizing that the person who ruined her first meeting with Claude stood before her.
“How amusing.”
A soft laugh escaped Sarah’s lips. The servants and Mei turned to look at her.
“…?”
Sarah’s serene, smiling face appeared before them, her jewel-like blue eyes glimmering.
May and the servants fell silent, sensing an eerie atmosphere behind Sarah’s gentle expression.
“What now…?”
“I said, it’s amusing.”
Sarah took a leisurely step forward. May instinctively backed away.
Once face-to-face, Sarah looked down at May with a calm yet authoritative gaze.
“I never thought the people of the prestigious Ambrosia family would be unaware of a title personally bestowed upon me by His Majesty, the Emperor of Crombell.”
The servants’ expressions hardened instantly.
Ambrosia’s pride was their highest honor, and May had inadvertently insulted it.
“I-It’s common sense that an unmarried woman cannot inherit a title!”
Sarah smiled gracefully.
“Well, it was His Majesty himself who allowed the impossible. If you have complaints, should I arrange for you to voice them before him?”
“H-How dare you…!”
May stammered, overwhelmed by Sarah’s presence.
