Chapter 64: First Quest II

"This is our destination," Leon said, gazing ahead at a worn-down and crumbling castle. The structure loomed before them, its ominous aura casting long shadows in the fading light.

"This is the first quest location," he explained. "It's a dungeon called Red Skeleton King's Hall. Our task is simple: kill the Red Skeleton King and bring back its crown as proof."

Roselia nodded, her gaze fixed on the eerie castle. The faint sound of distant whispers and the occasional clatter of bones added to the ominous atmosphere.

Having left the town where they began their journey, the duo had trekked for hours to reach this place. The path leading here was desolate, with little sign of life other than the occasional scavenger bird circling overhead.

The dungeon entrance stood wide open, an archway covered in moss and age-old carvings. The faint glow of red light spilled out from within, pulsating like a heartbeat.

"Seems straightforward enough," Roselia said, stretching her arms as if preparing for a light workout. "Do you think this King will pose any real threat?"

Leon smirked, adjusting the weapon strapped to his side as the faint glow of runes on his wrist pulsed rhythmically. "It's an A-Rank quest, so we shouldn't underestimate it. But it's nothing we can't handle."

"It's an A-Rank quest, which means it's around Level 40, right?" Roselia asked, her tone curious yet confident.

Leon nodded. "Yeah, it's near that level range. Specifically, the Red Skeleton King is a Level 45 King-class monster. And as you know, monsters like that are roughly equivalent to Level 60 in human standards."

Roselia nodded in understanding, her hand resting lightly on the hilt of her weapon. Monsters, like humans, had classifications and potential ranks. The standard hierarchy included Common, Uncommon, Elite, Rare, Lord, Noble, Prince, King, and Saint-class monsters. Beyond these ranks were legendary classes, but they were typically only found on floors exceeding Level 100.

"Good to know," Roselia said with a smirk. "Makes this more exciting."

Leon chuckled. "Just don't let your excitement get us killed."

With that, they stepped into the dilapidated castle, its eerie silence broken only by the faint clatter of shifting bones. The air inside was heavy with the stench of decay, and faint crimson light illuminated the hallways, casting long, ominous shadows.

The adventure had officially begun.

As Leon and Roselia moved deeper into the castle, their footsteps echoed against the cracked stone walls. The air seemed to pulse with a faint energy, a sure sign of the dungeon's magic at work.

"This place reeks of death," Roselia muttered, wrinkling her nose. "And I mean that literally."

"Typical for a dungeon tied to skeletons," Leon replied, his voice steady. He glanced at the glowing runes on the wall, etched in an ancient language he partially understood. "The Red Skeleton King thrives on death energy. The more undead minions we face, the stronger he might be."

Roselia gripped her weapon tighter, her fiery aura sparking faintly to life. "Then let's clear them out before he gets too cocky."

Suddenly, a clattering sound echoed from the shadows ahead. Emerging from the darkness were skeletal warriors, their eyes glowing an ominous red. Each held rusted weapons that looked fragile but radiated dark energy.

"There's our welcoming committee," Leon said, drawing his blade. The runes on his wrist flared brighter, and his weapon crackled with energy. "Let's make this quick."

Roselia smirked, summoning a flicker of her violet flames. "Don't slow me down."

The skeletons charged, their hollow cries reverberating through the hall. Leon darted forward, slashing through the first two with precise strikes. His blade left arcs of glowing energy, and the skeletons crumbled to ash on contact.

Roselia, meanwhile, moved with a dancer's grace, her flames igniting the air as she swept through the remaining skeletons. Her flames weren't just destructive; they burned with a purifying intensity that left no trace of the dark energy animating the undead.

As the last skeleton fell, the castle trembled slightly, a low rumble reverberating through the ground.

"Looks like he knows we're here," Roselia said, flicking a strand of hair from her face.

"Good," Leon replied, sheathing his weapon briefly. "Let him prepare. It won't make a difference."

The two pressed forward, encountering increasingly dangerous traps and stronger undead as they delved deeper. Poison darts fired from walls, floors collapsed to reveal bottomless pits, and spectral entities tried to drain their life force.

Leon's quick reflexes and Roselia's destructive power carried them through each obstacle. Yet, the deeper they went, the heavier the atmosphere became, as if the dungeon itself was testing their resolve.

Finally, they reached a massive double door adorned with crimson runes. The skeletal motif carved into the doors left no doubt: the Red Skeleton King awaited them inside.

"Ready for the main event?" Leon asked, placing a hand on the door.

Roselia grinned, her flames flaring brighter. "Always."

With a shove, the doors creaked open, revealing a massive throne room bathed in a blood-red glow. At the far end sat the Red Skeleton King, a towering figure clad in decayed armor, with a crown of jagged bone atop its skull. In its bony hands, it held a colossal greatsword that radiated malevolent energy.

The creature's hollow eyes locked onto them as it stood, its bones creaking ominously. When it spoke, its voice was like a cold wind blowing through a graveyard.

"Foolish mortals," it intoned, its voice echoing through the chamber. "You dare challenge my domain? Your bones will serve me for eternity."

Leon smirked, drawing his weapon. "Big talk for a bag of bones." Stay updated through My Virtual Library Empire

Roselia's flames ignited fully, encasing her in a fiery aura. "Let's see how long that arrogance lasts."

The Red Skeleton King roared, raising its greatsword high before slamming it downward.

Slice!

A massive arc of crimson energy erupted from the blade, slicing through the air toward Leon and Roselia with deadly precision. The power of the slash cracked the stone floor beneath it, sending chunks of debris flying.

With practiced ease, Leon sidestepped the attack, his movements fluid and calculated. Roselia mirrored him, stepping just out of range as the energy crashed into the far wall, leaving a deep, smoldering scar.

Leon smirked, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the attack. "Level 45, huh? Big swings, lots of power... but nothing we can't handle."

Roselia spun her spear in her hands, her flames flickering as she prepared to strike. "Let's not get cocky. That was just a warm-up."

The Skeleton King didn't wait for them to make the next move. It lifted its greatsword with surprising speed for its massive frame and charged forward, the ground trembling beneath its skeletal feet. Its sword cleaved through the air in a wide horizontal arc, aiming to cut them both down in one swing.

Leon ducked low, rolling to the side as the blade whooshed over him. Roselia leaped into the air, using the momentum to launch a fireball directly at the King's skull.

The flames exploded on contact, but the Skeleton King didn't even flinch. Its hollow eye sockets glowed brighter, and with a guttural growl, it retaliated, swinging its sword in a vicious upward slash aimed at Roselia.

"Roselia!" Leon shouted, his body already moving.

Before the blade could reach her, Roselia twisted mid-air, narrowly avoiding the attack. She landed gracefully, her spear now wreathed in violet flames. "Thanks, but I don't need saving yet."

Leon chuckled, drawing his blade as the runes on it began to glow. "Good, because I'm about to make this thing regret swinging at you."

The Skeleton King growled again, raising its hand to summon reinforcements. From the cracks in the ground, skeletal warriors began clawing their way to the surface, surrounding Leon and Roselia.

Leon's smirk widened as he readied his weapon. "Ah, reinforcements. Perfect. I was just getting bored."

Roselia stepped closer, her flames flaring to life in a circle around her. "You take the grunts. I'll handle the big guy."

"Deal," Leon replied, his blade crackling with energy. He dashed toward the skeletal warriors, cutting them down with swift, precise strikes.

Roselia, meanwhile, focused on the Red Skeleton King. "Let's see how you like this!" she shouted, unleashing a torrent of violet flames. The fire engulfed the King, forcing it to shield itself with its greatsword. The heat scorched the throne room, but the King emerged from the flames, its armor glowing red-hot but otherwise unharmed.

"Stubborn, aren't you?" Roselia muttered, gripping her spear tighter.

The Red Skeleton King roared again, its eyes blazing with fury. It raised its greatsword, and this time, dark energy began to swirl around it, condensing into a massive, malevolent aura.

Leon glanced back, finishing off the last skeleton. "Roselia, watch out! That attack's not just for show!"

"I noticed," she replied, her own aura intensifying. "Let's see which burns brighter—your death energy or my flames."

Leon, after blasting apart some skeleton heads with his sword, shifted to Aether Magic. With a flick of his hand, he unleashed small bursts of concentrated energy at the undead minions. Aether, being a highly destructive form of magic, worked wonders as the skeletons' heads popped like balloons with each strike.

After dealing with the minions, Leon calmly stood to the side, observing Roselia as she engaged the Skeleton King. He crossed his arms, watching her precise movements and fiery attacks, but something caught his eye—something unusual.

His brow furrowed as he scanned the throne room again. There was something off, something that hadn't been mentioned in the quest details or the information they'd received beforehand.
