Chapter 415: Soulless
"You should ask yourself…"
"Why, after absorbing so many superpowers, are you still just at the pinnacle of the seventh dimension?"
Zane spoke calmly, raising his palm in midair.
Swoosh!
All the remnants of black liquid on Jaspers' body flew into Zane's hand.
Then, with a gentle squeeze, Zane formed it into a small black sphere.
"Next time we meet, I won't let you go!"
The small black sphere let out a final screech.
Snap!
As the words fell, Zane lightly pinched the sphere, and it instantly exploded.
Fragments scattered and quickly turned to dust in the air, disappearing without a trace.
"Huh?"
"So, this Venom doesn't have a soul after all."
After crushing the black sphere condensed from the black liquid on the Venom, using the power of death, Zane fell into a momentary meditation.
He found no trace of a soul within the Venom.
"I don't know much about the Venom of this ultimate universe," Zane said.
"But in other dimensional universes, Venom is essentially an unconscious material entity.
"Only when it possesses a host does it start absorbing the host's emotional consciousness, generating more negative emotions to influence the host."
"So, whether it has a soul or not has never been seriously studied."
Roma conjured an exceptionally thick ancient book with magic. As she opened it and examined its contents, she explained to the group:
"Another theory suggests that it's an intelligent alien organic symbiote, often appearing in liquid form."
"It needs to bond with a host to survive, granting the host immense strength and abilities."
"When the venom symbiote bonds with a host, only then can the two life forms together be called Venom.
"If the host is a good person, it strengthens their resolve and helps them become a superhero. But if the host is evil, it turns them into a supervillain."
"Since the symbiote itself is an alien single-celled organism, it naturally wouldn't have a soul."
"This is also why it can generally resist soul-based attacks. For instance, Earth's superpowered hero Ghost Rider's Penance Stare isn't very effective against it."
"It's said that it has bonded with over a thousand hosts."
As Roma finished, she closed the thick book and used magic to make it disappear.
She glanced coldly at Jaspers, who had been in a soul-state for over half an hour, lying on the body Zane had driven the Venom from, wriggling ceaselessly.
With a look of disdain, Roma furrowed her brow and said icily, "Zane, if you don't use the Phoenix Force to help the guy behind you, he might truly bid farewell to this universe."
Hearing Roma speak on his behalf, Jaspers' soul glanced at her gratefully, wanting to say thank you.
But he saw her walking away without looking back.
Hearing Roma's words, everyone suddenly remembered that the primary objective of this mission had yet to be fully completed.
They then saw Zane extend a finger, pointing at Jaspers' soul and body in turn.
In an instant, a flicker of fiery red flame ignited simultaneously in the heart of Jaspers' body and the corresponding area in his soul.
The flames sizzled, crackling as they emitted sounds, then erupted into a chain of fire that formed a thick, blazing connection.
Boom!
A dazzling burst of fiery light exploded in the void, enveloping Jaspers' entire body.
Moments later, the group witnessed Jaspers' soul flash and disappear, merging back into the body below.
Not long after, the previously rigid form began to stir.
"Thank the heavens, thank the earth… and thank the mightiest Grim Reaper!"
"At last, the handsome and dashing Jaspers once again shines on the grand stage of the Ultimate Universe!"
Jaspers spoke exuberantly, his face glowing with pride. Then, they saw him furrow his brows toward the space ahead.
Suddenly, a nearby pyramid transformed into a towering statue of Zane.
"Unfair! This is so unfair!"
"Jaspers, my brother, you're laying it on thick for Zane!"
"Let's not forget, the rest of us went through hell and back for you! We abandoned everything in the main universe, Earth-616, to come to this backwater Earth-1610 in the Ultimate Universe."
"Let's talk about the recent sacrifices. Baby Groot and I haven't had even eight hours of sleep, pulling all-nighters and sitting on cramped planes for hours."
"And here we are, stuck in this godforsaken place, fighting a pitch-black psycho."
Rocket, cradling the half-meter-tall Groot, sniffled theatrically as he clutched the tree-like figure, sneaking glances at Jaspers to gauge his reaction.
Rocket had always been fixated on the idea of having his own statue. Ever since seeing Zane and Bastis' statues in the Divine Realm, he'd secretly resolved to get one of his own someday.
Later, when Zane destroyed all his statues in the Divine Realm after renouncing the need for faith energy, Rocket had given up the idea.
But now, Jaspers' actions reignited Rocket's determination, the smoldering ashes of his wish flaring back into a roaring blaze.
Swoosh!
Swoosh!
Swoosh swoosh swoosh!
In high spirits, Jaspers, hearing Rocket's protests, proceeded to conjure statues for Lorna, Roma, and the other ladies after Zane.
Finally, he got to the men.
When it came to Rocket and Groot, however, there were no pyramids left, so he had to use the surrounding desert sand to mold their statues.
Unlike the radiant, majestic statues of the women, Rocket and Groot's sandy statues appeared somewhat shabby, with drooping heads and lackluster expressions.
As Rocket put it, they lacked the heroic grandeur a statue deserved.
