Chapter 99: 99 Don't You Ever Stop!
The BGM Warrior skill had an extensibility beyond Altair's imagination.
Among the skills Altair currently possessed, Wolf Wisdom had the greatest extensibility, as it provided various knowledge, allowing Altair to craft a variety of things as long as he had enough materials.
While BGM Warrior might not be as comprehensive and exaggerated in its extensibility as Wolf Wisdom, it was packed with an abundance of fun. Each influential piece of music brought different buffs, full of unpredictability. Constantly adding more songs made Altair feel like he was drawing cards from a low-repeat-rate system, where you never knew what the next card would be.
This sense of mastering the unknown excited Altair so much that he couldn't stop.
With Hestia's help, he continued recording new songs... some provided beneficial buffs, some had little effect, and others even brought negative outcomes. For instance, one of the more intriguing BGMs he paid attention to had some peculiar results.
Take, for example, the BGM from a certain dragon movie. Just as the description suggested, after triggering the buff, Altair could unleash a golden dragon special effect. And there was also a BGM from Yu-Gi-Oh, God's Anger.
This buff gave Altair special damage against divinity. What a coincidence... it seemed like fate was guiding him toward a certain war in the future.
There was also the famous Passionate Duelist from Yu-Gi-Oh! Its buff was quite interesting; it could only be activated when in a desperate situation. Once triggered, the enemy would be unable to speak, leaving only Altair able to talk... perfect for a card battle. The world where only he can monologue is complete!
Another track, Freesia, could be activated when teammates were present, lowering Altair's stats by 90% and forcing him into a weakened state while boosting his teammates' stats by 200%. A self-sacrificing buff that enhances the whole team.
If Altair used this BGM while adventuring with Saeko in the dungeon, she'd probably shout, "Captain, what are you doing?!"1
Luckily, the buff only lasted for the duration of one song, just like all the others. Aside from a specific invulnerability buff, which lasted for only 5 seconds.
At first, Altair thought the buff was a bit of a joke, but after reviewing some of the earlier buffs, he came up with a combo strategy.
In a large-scale battle, if his side started to lose, Altair could activate Freesia, giving his team a powerful boost, then trigger... which would throw him into a 90% stat reduction, rendering him helpless... surely enough to qualify as a desperate situation. He could then activate the second BGM, instantly restoring himself to full power and granting a 200% attribute boost for a one-shot counterattack!
This combo would be ideal in a group fight... if they still couldn't win after that, then they were truly doomed.
However, Altair doubted it would come to that.
From morning till night, Altair and Hestia had been busy recording music, so much so that they didn't notice when Saeko came home. Saeko, seeing the two busy, didn't disturb them. Instead, she went straight to the kitchen to make dinner. After the meal was ready, Saeko called them out of the recording studio to eat.
During dinner, Altair and Hestia shared the progress they had made on the new skill that day, explaining the various buffs triggered by the BGMs. There were so many skill effects that Altair couldn't possibly go through them all. He only mentioned some buffs that might require teamwork so that they could coordinate in future battles.
Saeko was quite amazed by how many quirky buffs Altair's BGM skill could offer, but overall, she found it very amusing since many of the conditions for triggering the buffs were rather unique.
"Saeko, you've probably reached your stat cap by now, right?"
Altair shifted the conversation toward her after discussing his skills.
"Yeah, I feel like I'm close to the limit for an upgrade, but not quite there yet."
Similar to Altair, Saeko was a speed and agility-focused adventurer. Unlike Altair, who could grind out experience by slaughtering monsters en masse, Saeko had to earn her stats by cutting down enemies one by one.
"I previously fought the floor boss, Goliath, on the 17th floor. Based on the intel I got, it's set to respawn in three days. When the time comes, I'll take you there to ambush it. When I took down Goliath before, that's what pushed me to level up to Level 2. I think if you defeat it, it might max out your stats as well."
Altair was planning to help Saeko level up quickly by taking her to fight Goliath.
Goliath was a great monster, especially during the transition from Level 2 to Level 3, when most weapons ran on magic stones. Goliath provided the stones needed.
It was perfect timing, as Altair had just finished setting up a new system for recording music... one modified to run on magic stones to generate electricity. He needed a fresh batch of magic stones, so it was time to pay Goliath a visit.
"And it'll be a good chance for me to test out my new skills."
Altair is eager to see how the Freesia buff could boost Saeko's stats.
"Great!"
Saeko nodded enthusiastically. She had been losing interest in fighting regular monsters between floors 1 to 17. Without the pressure of the deeper floors, it just wasn't the same. But now that Goliath, a monster equivalent to a Level 4 opponent, was on the menu, her excitement was rekindled.
"A battle with a floor boss will help me level up!"
Saeko, with her Sword Demon skill, thrived in these high-pressure, life-or-death situations. This was the perfect opportunity for her growth!
"Oh, by the way, I ran into the Loki Familia when I was coming back."
Saeko shifted topics after they finished talking about the upcoming fight.
"What about the Loki Familia?"
"Loki was there, accompanying Ais Wallenstein on a shopping trip. She saw me and approached, asking when you'd be free to come to help boost her Familia's strength. It's been over a month since you promised her."
"Uh..."
Altair froze for a moment.
After spending over five months in the Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, he had completely forgotten about that promise!
