It's a sunny day, clean air and dense forest all around. And the good thing was that there were no random gawkers to be seen all around. I'd chosen the most remote spot to avoid such a thing. It made it harder to keep an eye on Becca and Ryan, but I wasn't worried about myself. My eyes could see bugs and tracking devices from miles away if I wanted to look for them. And I keep a close eye on my territory.
- And you've gotten faster," I dodged the long claws, protecting myself from poking my beautiful eyes out. - But not fast enough yet.
But I couldn't leave such a dangerous trick unanswered. So I grabbed my opponent by the arm and threw her over me. What was my surprise when she not only landed lightly on her feet, but managed to twist around so that she was able to kick me in the head. Given the awkward position Becca was in, such a move took me by surprise, causing me to even let go of the hand I had grabbed earlier.
The girl took advantage of the hitch and ran, trying to get away from me. A grin touched my lips, she'd never been able to do that before, and that was even without the use of X-ray vision. I ran after her, keeping up with her pace to keep her in suspense, even being slightly faster. And just as I was about to catch up with her, Rebecca turned left, hiding behind a thick tree for a moment. I couldn't take that chance, so I went to intercept her, to be right in front of her.
Except she didn't come out of there, which surprised me again. But what surprised me even more was the extremely powerful impact of my chest colliding with Becky's graceful legs, the force of which pushed me backwards, dragging me slightly across the slightly damp ground. Before I can get up, the girl is already on top of me, just marking the impact with her claws. While they certainly can't hurt me in any way and she knows it, it spoke volumes that her instincts were in control. She usually didn't hold back.
- Я... won. - Breathing heavily, the predator announced, taking her time to get up from her defeated opponent.
- Admitting defeat. - Smiling my brightest smile, raising my hands in surrender.
- Shut up. - She smiled back, leaning in and giving me a gentle kiss. Unfortunately, it was too quick, our lips barely touching each other for me to savour it.
- Are you going to starve me like that? - I snorted, watching her smoothly get up off me.
- Dinner will be in a couple of hours, tonight it's meatballs in gravy. - As if nothing had happened she replied, fixing her clothes and shaking off the dirt. She even turned away, hiding her face and didn't notice the fact that I was already behind her.
- You know what I mean.
I covered her shoulders with my hands, making her wince but then relax as I began to slowly massage them. A light moan escaped her lips, making my whole being stir. How I wished I could hear that sound more often, louder and in the bedroom.
- You said something about Ryan's training.
She tried to change the subject, rather ineptly, by the way.
- Yeah, I want to teach him how to fly.
- Isn't that dangerous? Are you sure he's ready?
My mother turned to me with a look of concern that made me stare for a few seconds. She's much more attractive at times like this than when she's wriggling her body in battle.
- John?
- He'll be fine. At his age, I've already broken the sound barrier, he'll be fine," I assured the young mum, grinning. - If you want, you can be there during the training. Although you won't see much if we're in the air today.
- Ryan's afraid of heights," Becca warned. - Just don't start at a high altitude.- How can you imagine that? What if he just doesn't make it to the ground in time? You'd be the first one to run to him, even though his skin can already stop bullets.
- What do you suggest? Fly up to bird's-eye level and just let him go into freefall? - Becca asked indignantly, her claws out of nervousness without even noticing it.
- That's what I'm suggesting," he shrugged, looking at the woman's shocked face. - Do you know how cats, dogs, even people learn to swim? At the moment of danger their instincts tell them what to do, the same with flying. He's ready, he's been ready for a year. It's in his blood. You'll see, you'll be running after him and shouting at him not to fly round the house.
- I'm not yelling at him," the woman replied with a frown and sighed. - Just promise me you'll keep him safe.
- I promise.
That was the end of the conversation, and we hurried back to the house, where Ryan was patiently and even excitedly doing his homework. He's a smart kid, and he's also diligent. Although I suspect that the first one was not without my genes, which give me an almost perfect memory. I wonder what would have happened if such a person was also interested in science. Ryan didn't have that, but superheroes do have hobbies. Well, he kind of liked Seven, but I don't know about the others.
When we entered the house, he was distracted from what he was doing. Becca called him into the living room and sat her son on the couch. The boy looked at us with a question in his eyes, waiting for an explanation.
- Ryan, I...I mean we, have something to tell you.
- Okay?
The boy asked hesitantly, looking at his mother with confusion. His gaze moves to me, to which I only smile confidently, winking at him. Ryan smiles back uncertainly, calming down.
- I think it's time to reveal to you whose son you are. - I smile softly at my son and take off my glasses. - I'm a Homelander.
- Where's the suit? - First thing the sly one said after only a few seconds.
You could tell by the look in his eyes that he knew, and that funny smile. He knew and didn't say anything. He kept quiet the whole time. Although it should be understood that I didn't get my glasses from a Kryptonian so that I could fool everyone. And if passersby just do not notice and pass by, then an extremely perceptive boy will quickly notice the resemblance between my father and the most famous superhero in the world.
Next we left the house and headed for the place we had prepared in advance. The wasteland in the middle of the forest looked a little foreign, perhaps because of the almost invisible holes that had not yet had time to grow grass. And there were enough of them to realise that there were not small trees in their place at all. Took me nearly an hour to clear this place out.
- This is where we'll start.
- What do we do? - Ryan is looking round the place we've come to.
- You're gonna fly.
- But I don't know how.
- You'll learn, and you'll learn fast.
I'm gonna take my son in my arms.
- Just be careful.
I just nod at the worried mother's words, words are unnecessary. Ryan, on the other hand, is extremely concerned about his situation, having no idea what's going on. I grin and lightly push my feet off the ground before flying upwards smoothly. The boy watched with all his eyes as Becky's silhouette grew smaller with each passing second. He tensed as he felt us speed up slightly and continued to do so. There was fear in his eyes now, instead of excitement, and his hands clutched at me, not wanting to let go.
- Dad?
- Dad? Yeah?
- Can we go downstairs now?
- Yeah, we are. Soon enough.
Slowly but surely we were approaching cloud level, and soon we reached, stopping at that level.
- Did we?
A quiet voice, almost a whisper, came to my ear.
- Really.
My hands easily pushed away the light body of the boy who was watching me in shock, drowning very quickly in the clouds and drifting further down. I imagine what he feels now, indifferently watching his flight to the ground. Then I let myself go too, letting gravity do its thing. My body dived into the clouds as well, soon reaching the level of the screaming boy. Perhaps I shouldn't have started from such a height? It doesn't matter anymore, though.
- How are you doing?
Such a casual question definitely caught him off guard, as he even stopped screaming. Ryan was still staring at me with those same big eyes, not seeming to know if I was laughing at him or asking a serious question.
-You left me! - His eyes lit up with anger and injustice, showing that his feelings were genuine.
- Yes.
I even nod, with a wry smile on my lips. Anger is still much better than fear and panic, especially when you're falling from a bird's eye view and above. At least I've learnt that the superhearing is in place, since it can hear me quite clearly. That's good, I'll have to look into that. But the boy didn't know what to say to my nonchalant reply.
- Calm down? Now listen carefully if you want to learn to fly.
I flew up to him and turned him over so that he was lying belly down. The wind whipping in his face made Ryan squeeze his eyes shut, trying to protect them. By the way, it's almost impossible to harm either my eyes or his, unless we try, of course.
- Listen to my voice, Ryan. Focus on it and do exactly as I say.
The boy nodded, still afraid to open his eyes.
- Relax. Breathe deeply. Feel the air, feel the wind in your face. Feel it in your gut, trust your instincts. Fly!
The smooth, confident voice had an effect on him that I didn't expect. Ryan really pushed off and literally flew forward and upwards, picking up speed. The kid definitely had a talent for it. I quickly caught up with him, flying next to him.
- Open your eyes. See what you can do.
My quiet whisper was heard and the boy opened his eyes, seeing the incredible views before him. A majestic picture of clouds that covered the heavens. Panic and then anger had hindered him greatly before. But now, he could look at his surroundings with clear eyes and this view definitely appealed to him.
- I'm flying... I'm flying, Dad! - Ryan shouted excitedly, throwing his arms forward.
Then he fell down sharply with a smile on his lips. Now his attitude towards such an extreme fall was drastically different, judging by the slight recklessness. Snorting at such a prank of my son, I too fell down following him.
- Mum, look!
The woman watched in a kind of stupor as her son spun around her and took off, doing pirouettes in the air. I, meanwhile, landed next to her, also watching my son. Somehow his behaviour reminded me of the behaviour of chicks that had just flown out of the nest and felt a bit of freedom. There was something mesmerising about it, like a child's first steps.

The girl walked confidently into her room and sighed quietly as she closed the door. Her gaze travelled through the interior of the spacious, bright apartment. All the furniture was stylised in one way or another to match the gold of her colour. She liked the way things were arranged, but there had to be a limit to it. She would have liked less gold and more warm colours, so that she would feel more at home than under the spotlight.
She reached the make-up table with the mirror and undercolour and sat down opposite, fixing her golden hair. Then with careful movements she took off that lush hair, leaving only the pressed short hair of the same colour on her head. Except it wasn't lush and long, which was the reason why she had to wear a wig. She spent the next ten minutes rinsing off all the make-up that had become like a second skin to her.
Only then did she make it to the bed and sat down, taking off her high-heeled boots. A quiet groan of relief escaped her lips as she got rid of the unloved element of her superhero wardrobe. Sighing, she simply fell back onto the bed, finally relaxing. Yeah, this wasn't how she had imagined the life of the number one heroes. One consolation - she wasn't the only one suffering.
Her hands habitually fumbled for her smartphone and switched it on, habitually unlocking the screen. She immediately came across messages that linked to some sort of video. And for some reason, more and more of the comments on her page were about her being a fake. This riddled her with anxiety and made her quickly click on the video to see what was up.
- What the... - Mumbled Annie, barely stopping herself from profanity. - "Drug V?"
