Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Diverting Conflicts
"What big trouble could we get into?" Tom asked, confused.
"Tom, it's not unusual for criminals to commit organized crimes... And besides, it's impossible for a single human trafficker's hideout to accumulate this much wealth," Wade explained.
"You mean that the human trafficker hideout is just a part of some criminal organization, and the gold we took was money stored there by a larger criminal group?" Tom began to understand.
"If it were just that, it wouldn't be the worst," Wade said, furrowing his brows. "Think about it—who would be entrusted with guarding such a large sum of money? It's likely someone very important within their organization. And we've scared someone who might be extremely important to them..."
"This is my fault... I should have thought of this earlier, I should have handled it more cleanly!"
Wade seemed a bit frustrated.
Tom nodded slightly. "Now that I think about it, we really have made some serious enemies."
Then he shook his head and said, "But what does it matter? How would they even know this is connected to us?"
Wade sighed, "You've forgotten about the children we set free, haven't you? As long as they find those children, they'll definitely get our information from them..."
"Once they have our physical descriptions, they can easily learn from others where we're from..."
"A criminal organization that's managed to accumulate this much wealth definitely has that kind of ability."
"Sigh... I shouldn't have said a single word to those tied-up children... No, I should have made sure they never even saw us!"
This was Wade's first time doing something like raiding and stealing, and it was clear he lacked experience.
Tom scoffed, "No matter how big their power is, they're just Muggles. We're wizards, why should we be afraid of those Muggles causing trouble for us?"
In Tom's eyes, no Muggle could threaten him. They were all no match for his "basic attack"—no matter how many there were, they posed no real danger. He didn't understand why Wade and Dumbledore seemed to think this was such a big deal.
"Tom, we might not be afraid, but what about Mrs. Cole and the others? What about the other kids at the orphanage? These people will find their way here sooner or later. Think about it—if these people can't find us, what will happen then?" Wade stared firmly at Tom. "This is our mistake, we can't just ignore the lives of others and let them suffer the consequences for us."
Tom was at a loss for words.
In truth, he really wanted to nod and say that he didn't care about the lives of the other children at the orphanage.
But as his mindset had changed unknowingly, the coldness in his heart seemed to flicker with a faint light, ignited by Wade's words. In the end, he couldn't bring himself to say something as heartless as, "It's none of my business."
"So... So we just need to get ahead of them and capture these guys first, right?"
After a moment of hesitation, Tom murmured softly.
Wade quickly rejected Tom's suggestion.
"Even though we have the ability to bring them to justice, we still can't accurately locate these people," Wade said calmly.
"Even if just one person slips through the net, it could lead to endless trouble."
"Besides, even if we send them to prison, they have so much money, they'll definitely be able to reduce their sentences as much as possible."
"And when they're released... do you think they won't come back for revenge, even worse than before?"
Tom snorted, "Then we'll just take them all out!"
"That's not a good idea, Tom. We can't just kill everyone who's wronged us!"
Wade said, throwing a casual glance at Dumbledore.
Although Wade also thought it would be best to just get rid of them all—after all, every one of them had blood on their hands—how could he say something like that directly in front of Dumbledore? Wouldn't that just make Dumbledore suspicious?
Tom, you fool! You're still too young!
At that moment, Dumbledore had been quietly observing their conversation for quite a while.
In Dumbledore's eyes, both Wade and Tom were very intelligent and decisive children.
However, these two seemed to possess completely opposite personalities.
The kind-hearted Wade and the indifferent Tom...
Dumbledore's greatest concern was Tom. He knew the nature of this kind of child all too well.
He couldn't predict what kind of frightening person this cold-hearted and power-hungry child would grow into as he grew older.
But now, Dumbledore was relieved to see that under Wade's influence, even this solitary and indifferent child, Tom, was starting to show a glimmer of humanity in his heart!
This discovery filled Dumbledore with joy, and he was also filled with hope for Wade.
He hoped that Wade's presence would help Tom gradually return to the right path.
Taking a step back, even if Tom eventually lost control, Dumbledore believed that Wade would be able to subdue him...
At this moment, Wade had no idea what Dumbledore was thinking. He was just quietly considering how to resolve the big mess he had created.
"Professor... do you have any way to keep the other children at the orphanage safe?" Wade turned to Dumbledore and asked.
Wade believed that since Dumbledore had come, he must have a solution.
Because Dumbledore had always been a person who carefully planned before acting.
"We just need to shift the blame," Dumbledore said, not disappointing Wade.
"You told the children you rescued that those kidnappers were captured by the adults in your family, right?"
"Yes, at that time it was just the two of us, and it was hard to explain to them... so I just said that the adults in my family had subdued the criminals," Wade nodded.
"Good... so, since you told the children this, they will definitely know this as well," Dumbledore said calmly. "In this orphanage, what adult could so easily subdue those vicious kidnappers? It couldn't have been Mrs. Cole, could it?"
Wade suddenly understood, "So, as long as we are not linked to the orphanage at all, they will never suspect the orphanage, because the orphanage doesn't have that kind of capability..."
"They will only suspect that we are from another black-market crime organization, and the so-called clues leading to the orphanage must be fake."
"Heh~ As long as we fabricate some more evidence of this fake organization and let them investigate it, diverting their attention, the orphanage will be safe."
"Exactly, that's the idea," Dumbledore said with a smile, clapping his hands.
Tom frowned and said, "But, we really are from the orphanage... how can we completely erase all traces of us there?"
"Leave that to me, Tom," Dumbledore said with a smile. "We are wizards, aren't we? The magic lies in its ability to turn decay into something marvelous..."
Wade suddenly seemed to have thought of something. "Professor, after all the traces of us in the orphanage are erased, will Mrs. Cole and the others completely forget about us?"
Dumbledore sighed. "Unfortunately, Wade, I must do this. Of course, if you don't want this, I can come up with another plan."
Before Wade could say anything, Tom waved his hand repeatedly and said, "I don't know what Wade thinks, but I don't mind at all. Anyway... in Mrs. Cole's eyes, I was always a trouble... a nuisance. If they forget about me, it would actually be a good thing for them..."
Dumbledore gave Tom a deep look, then turned to Wade.
"I have no objections. After all, even if she forgets about me, I won't forget the kindness she showed me..." Wade said firmly.
In reality, Wade had been in this world for less than a month.
Although he was indeed grateful to Mrs. Cole for not letting him end up on the streets, if he were to say he would grow fond of this place, it would be somewhat pretentious.
"Alright, then. Let's do it this way. You both pack your things. Someone will come to pick you up in the morning... I also need to go make some preparations."
