Harry Potter: Return From Future

Chapter 66: Snape's Golden Rule

Tracey gave a stiff nod and Daphne mumbled the password and entered inside the Slytherin common room.

The duo stepped into the gloomy, dark and suffocating Slytherin common room- all these features were a part of its identity. Small sculptures and engravings of snakes which denoted the symbol of the Slytherin house marred the walls of the common room.

The atmosphere inside the common room was as one would expect of a place named the dungeons. The lighting in the common room was not sufficient- dim pale yellow light flickered in the common room and only the slight reflection of faces was visible in the light.

As Daphne entered inside, she felt her fears coming true. Standing in the centre and all around the common room were a number of Slytherin students.

As she and Tracey and Daphne entered, every eye was set on the duo. Despite having anticipated and being mentally well prepared for what was about to come, Daphne felt a chill in her spine.

She had not even taken few steps and was frozen at her place and anxiety had taken over face.

"Well... well... look who we have?" One of the 7th years boys sneered as he stepped forwards inching closer to Daphne Greengrass.

The boy was Quifol Wenton, one of the most prominent individuals in the Slytherin house. He was like a king in the Slytherin house and though his 'pure blood status' was not very high, he was extremely talented in magic and heralded close relations with the Malfoy family.

"Friends with Harry Potter," he laughed sarcastically. "The boy who lived... the boy who defeated the dark lord… the star of our generation."

"Does it feel special, Miss. Greengrass?" He asked as he stared at her. "To give such ideas to the star boy which not only made him think about his relation with the Slytherin house but he also offered a friendship in return."

Daphne was about to respond- what exactly, even she was not sure when the doors of Slytherin common room opened with a bang.

All eyes were drawn towards the door and in walked Severus Snape, head of the Slytherin house, with his ever perpetual sneer on his face.

"Professor," Quifol muttered in a confused tone.

Snape never made visits in the common room at this time of the night.

"Mr. Wenton," said Snape. "Miss. Greengrass."

Snape moved slowly and no one dared to even breathe loudly. Snape though was very benevolent towards his house and acted in their favour especially in public, his presence commanded respect and fear. And every Slytherin standing in the common room could feel that something was wrong.

Snape with his slow steps arrived near and sat down on the couch in the centre of the room.

"First day of every Hogwarts' session... the first day of every first year students at Hogwarts," Snape drawled slowly. "There is a golden rule which I engrain in their brains."

"Mr. Walse," Snape said as he turned as faced the student who had been victim of Harry's anger. "Can you please recite the golden rule?"

"Yes...professor," Rion Walse said with a stammer.

"Due to various reasons like- our association with the traits of Salazar Slytherin, the happenings of the previous war, our exalted status as pure bloods and seat holders of Wizengamot and our superior performance compared to the rest of the house; almost all the other 3 houses ostracize us... discriminate against us and look at us with eyes full of suspicion… probably hatred."

"In such a situation... we need to place a united front in front of entire Hogwarts," he continued. "We may have internal differences, struggles and squabbles but all those things must never come out in open."

"For when we are outside this common room, we all are one. If we do not act as one, we would be the ones who would suffer at the hands of the other houses."

"What happens in this house does not go outside the gates of the common room," Rion finished.

"Good..." Snape said. "It seems you all remember the rule."

"Then can I perhaps ask," Snape asked in an intense voice as he leaned forward. "That how come a certain thing which happens in this common room is now known by two very special and interesting person - Harry Potter and Hermione Granger."

"And Miss. Granger has already lodged a complaint about this to madam Minerva McGonagall," Snape said as he looked towards Daphne.

He was clearly indicating, that it was Daphne Greengrass who had revealed the knowledge of the happenings of the compartment to Harry.

The indication was neither lost on the students nor on Daphne.

Even so, she did not respond. She did not even attempt to clarify that it was not her who told anything to Harry. But it was Harry and Hermione themselves who had walked in on her, immediately after, when she had been bullied and beaten.

Her mind instead reeled in surprise. When Harry had not mentioned anything about the incident, she had felt a bit sad... and broken, but now the fact that Hermione Granger had complained to Minerva McGonagall changed a lot of things.

Maybe Harry had not really ignored her crisis. Maybe he was trying to find a solution for her. And that was enough for her.

For her, till she was at Hogwarts, things would remain in a certain limit and was somewhat bearable. Her life would turn the real hell, when she would leave Hogwarts and if things worked well, Harry Potter… Lord Potter would be her support.

Seeing no reaction forthcoming from Daphne, Snape thinned his lip in frustration. He really was curios what happened for that brat to come and propose friendship at the Slytherin table.
