Chapter 283: The Mystery Behind the Bizarre Incident
Wan Jun, feeling the intense pain in his chest and the terrifying sensation of his heart being grasped by someone else's hand, suddenly understood the fear Lei Zhen must have felt at the moment of his death. The terror, the fear, and yet such helplessness. What matched most between them was the shock and disbelief they both experienced right before death.
Lei Zhen couldn't believe that Lei Hu, whom he considered a brother, would actually strike at him, delivering a fatal blow no less. Lei Hu's disbelief stemmed from his astonishment that Lei Lie was willing to sacrifice his own life just to kill him. "Impostor, did you really think I would stake my own life just to kill you?"
As Lei Hu was filled with incredulity, Lei Lie—who was clinging onto him tightly—suddenly spoke. The voice seemed strained, and with Lei Lie's words, a mouthful of blood mixed with broken organs spurted out. However, despite the blood filling his mouth, Lei Lie's face revealed a thick smile.
"To live or die isn't for you to decide. You invaders should all die. Even if I can't kill you myself, your deaths are inevitable!" Lei Hu had just finished speaking when Lei Lie burst into laughter. "If you've not transcended life and death, what right do you have to participate in the trials of the Patrolling Celestial World? Now, let me show you how I will survive! Thunder Secret Arts—Soul Swap!"
Upon hearing Lei Lie's words, Lei Hu initially showed disdain, but when he heard "Soul Swap", something seemed to suddenly click in his mind. However, before he could process it further, he felt the arm that had pierced his chest retract, and along with it, his own heart was ripped from his body.
Lei Hu, having lost his heart and with his organs almost completely destroyed by Bai Yi's Lightning Strike, didn't last more than five breaths before he truly died, never to live again. Before his death, however, he saw Lei Lie—who had been holding onto him firmly—blink and suddenly transform into Lei Zhen, who was already dead. And as he slowly collapsed, using all his remaining strength, Lei Hu saw that Lei Lie, who had also been impaled through the chest by Bai Yi, was now standing perfectly fine where Lei Zhen's body had been.
"Lei Zhen, this counts as avenging you, right?" Seeing that Lei Hu was truly dead, Lei Zhen slowly approached. He reached out to check the pulse on Lei Hu's neck, knowing well that he was gone, but needing to confirm it personally for peace of mind, especially since this Lei Hu clearly wasn't the original anymore.
Feeling no pulse in the artery, Lei Lie knew that Lei Hu was indeed dead. Although moments before he had wanted to tear Lei Hu apart, now that he was truly dead, Lei Lie was overwhelmed with grief and fell to his knees with a thud. Not long ago, these two had been alive and planning celebrations after the Patrolling Celestial World was over. But in an instant, they had both become cold corpses, each having died at the hands of their own people.
Although there was definitely something wrong with this Lei Hu, and it was even possible that his soul had been exchanged, this body was certainly Lei Hu's own. Therefore, Lei Lie couldn't let them simply be abandoned in the wilderness. Perhaps he couldn't bring them back to the Transforming Thunder Ancestral Realm, but at least he had to try to take them to the Transforming Thunder Palace.
Taking a deep breath, Lei Lie forced himself to calm down. He turned to glance at Bai Yi, who nodded at him, then prepared to use a secret technique to locate the owner of that mysterious voice. With Bai Yi's consent, Lei Lie slowly stood up and bent down, picking up both bodies with an arm each.
Just then, a black beam shot explosively from between the two corpses. At the same time, Bai Yi's complexion changed drastically, "Lei Lie, stop, retreat quickly!" Bai Yi's voice was loud, but it was too late. As he screamed, Lei Lie's head was already soaring skywards, and his body was left in a kneeling position.
Following this, a hot geyser of blood spouted from Lei Lie's severed neck. The black beam had been so fast that it matched Lei Lie's thoughts in speed, and when Lei Lie's head landed on the ground, he only then felt a sharp pain in his neck. But that pain vanished in an instant, because I, Lei Lie, was already dead.
And Lei Lie never saw what that black beam that killed him was.
"Lei Lie, Lei Lie, Lei Lie!" Three heart-wrenching roars erupted. Bai Yi was nearly driven mad. If Lei Zhen's death was sudden and unexpected, Lei Hu's death was vengeful. But Lei Lie's death was something Bai Yi had never anticipated.
Four had set out to explore, and now three were dead, leaving only him. This feeling, it was terrible. Especially since Bai Yi knew for certain that the owner of that mysterious voice had been hiding nearby, but he had still been negligent. Because of his incompetence, the three Lei brothers had perished. "Who are you? Why have you maliciously attacked us?"
After letting out that gut-wrenching roar of rage, Bai Yi quickly regained his composure. However, his body, which trembled slightly from extreme anger, proved that Bai Yi's heart had not calmed as swiftly as it appeared on the surface.
"Hahaha, damned invaders. Good riddance, good riddance indeed, this scalding fresh blood, ah, it's been too long since I've seen such beautiful blood!" Accompanied by a shocked exclamation, a mysterious figure dressed in a black robe slowly emerged from below. When the figure fully revealed itself, Bai Yi saw that the black light which had killed Lei Lie was actually a huge black scythe.
"I'm asking you again, who the hell are you!" Bai Yi spoke again. This time, his voice was filled with intense murderous intent. Yet, the figure, shrouded entirely in a black robe, still did not answer Bai Yi's question but slowly crouched down, wiping a hand across Lei Lie's neck which was still oozing blood, and then tasted the blood from his hand, savoring it in his mouth.
"The taste is too good, indeed human blood is delicious, far better than that of those uncivilized beasts!" After tasting the blood, the figure in the black robe seemed very satisfied and was about to bend down and drink directly from Lei Lie's severed neck.
"I'm asking you, who are you, exactly!" This time, Bai Yi's voice came from right behind the robed man. At the same time, a thin, curved blade made of pure white lightning pierced toward the back of the black-robed person. However, as if completely unaware, he continued with his actions, his mouth almost touching the broken neck.
Although Bai Yi felt something was off, his hand did not hesitate, and the long knife pierced through the black-robed man's back and out his chest. Despite his successful strike, there was no joy on Bai Yi's face. This was because the sensation of the knife did not feel like it had pierced flesh and blood.
Despite the strange feeling of the stab, Bai Yi did not care and moved to the right rear. The sword, originally embedded in the person's chest, sliced the black-robed man's body in half with a horizontal cut as Bai Yi turned.
"Oh right, I almost forgot, there's another one! Alas, it seems the deliciousness will have to wait." The figure, who was about to drink the blood flowing from Lei Lie's body, had his chest sliced open by Bai Yi. The black-robed man had to stop his action, then wiped his hand horizontally across his chest, stood up, turned around, and muttered to himself as he looked at Bai Yi.
Bai Yi was shocked, for he realized that this robed figure was not human, or rather, definitely not a living person.
Having a similar realization was Wan Jun, the second strongest contender from the Annihilation Demon Nation participating in the trial. After sacrificing his team to kill the ten impostors, Wan Jun did not retreat immediately because he had felt from the beginning that there was another person somewhere around them.
Indeed, a young man dressed in blue appeared before Wan Jun. Seeing the man, Wan Jun lifted the Seven-Star Dragon Abyss and charged. The man in blue did not hesitate or waste words; the two immediately engaged in combat.
However, after a few exchanges, Wan Jun's mind mirrored Bai Yi's thoughts. This person was definitely not a living human. In just a short exchange, Wan Jun had inflicted at least seven or eight wounds on the man, yet he showed no sign of injury, and no blood flowed from his wounds. Most importantly, Wan Jun sensed an intense resentment on the man, an aura only present in tormented spirits.
If Wan Jun and Bai Yi had the chance to share their experiences, they would undoubtedly realize that the bizarre situations they faced, and the non-living beings they encountered, most likely originated from the same place or power. One thing was certain: in the eyes of both their opponents, Wan Jun and Bai Yi were identified as invaders. Although it was unclear what exactly this term "invaders" meant, it was unquestionably not said without reason.

Despite sensing the abnormality of their enemies, neither Bai Yi nor Wan Jun saw any possibility of retreat. Though not allies, both stood as the absolute strongest in their respective camps. They knew that in this world, which so far seemed utterly incomprehensible, any clue might become the key to victory, not to mention that these mysterious and eerie enemies might be linked to a massive secret.
