Genshin Impact: I Became The Son Of Greater Lord Rukkhadevata

Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Underground Scholars

"Ei, are you sure you don't want me to help you take care of that snake?"

"No need. I'll handle my own matters."

"I hope you won't regret this. I'd hate to see you worn down."

"Thank you for your concern."

Sumeru

Ever since the return of the Scarlet King and Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, things quickly settled into a working rhythm. Rukkhadevata began imparting knowledge to her people and established the Akademiya. Yu remarked that it was necessary to keep them occupied—there was no room for idle hands.

At Yu's request, the Scarlet King set up a… well, a desert technology company. You could call it "Scarlet King Tech." Yu tasked him with researching all sorts of peculiar things. The Scarlet King didn't mind; it was related to his expertise, and it gave him something to do.

However, there was something else on the Scarlet King's mind. After consulting with Rukkhadevata, she offered her opinion.

"Yu is already a mature ruler. He will not tolerate anything that harms his nation."

"But I'm not satisfied with that answer."

"There will always be opportunities. Haven't you noticed? Yu's power has never stopped growing. Even among the many gods, he's unique. He's like a tree growing inside a house—one day, he'll break through the roof."

"Let's hope so. Honestly, I'm curious about the source of his power."

"I think it's something from beyond this world. It's so gentle that the world hardly notices, yet vast enough to encompass everything—even capable of swallowing the sun."

"Beyond this world? Could he be…?"

"Exactly. Otherwise, how would he possess such an all-encompassing power?"

"Aren't you afraid that he's a seed cast into our world from beyond, meant to drain it of its vitality?"

"It does seem plausible, but if that's the case, wouldn't he have a natural opponent?"

At that moment, the Scarlet King suddenly realized something.

"You foresaw this long ago, didn't you? But even so…?"

"Unfortunately, he isn't."

"What do you mean?"

"He's simply a collection of unyielding wills. Not even the stars and seas could tear them apart. The World Tree accepted him and allowed him to merge with Teyvat. That's all."

"What's the purpose? The world wouldn't accept an outsider so easily, even if they were just fragments."

"Perhaps it wants him to become like a beast of burden for a caravan, forced to tread through muddy swamps just to ensure the safety of the cargo it carries."

"Didn't expect you to be such a gambler. This is a double-edged sword. Since that's the case, I'll make sure to stay alive—I want to see what it looks like when the raging beast strikes back at its master."

---

After sparring with Ei nineteen times today, Yu was starting to feel a twinge of regret. But pride wouldn't let him back down, though that didn't stop him from thinking, If I can't win, I can at least avoid further trouble. So, he decided to leave. Xiaochen was visibly disappointed—there hadn't been any chance to get close, and now Yu was leaving.

After escorting them back, Yu returned to Sumeru with a grand plan in mind.

Sumeru City

"Young man, I see you have great potential. How about joining me on a grand journey of learning?"

A massive billboard stood at the entrance of the Akademiya, featuring a caricature of Yu's face.

Greater Lord Rukkhadevata had no objection to this idea. After all, things had been rather peaceful recently, and it wouldn't hurt for Yu to take a group out on an educational excursion.

But Yu had a goal beyond mere busyness—he wanted to take three thousand disciples on a journey around the world and, incidentally, visit Ei.

However, Yu wasn't about to take just anyone. Weak constitutions were a no-go; traversing mountains and rivers would be too much for them. The candidates also needed proficiency in outdoor survival and basic self-defense skills.

In the end, Yu selected a few dozen students—all of whom turned out to be hulking brutes. While the numbers fell short of his goal, Yu figured it might be better this way. After all, appearances mattered. Since he didn't want to lose face by parading around with such a small group, he decided to start with a domestic tour as a trial run.

Their destination: the heart of the desert, where they could witness the grandeur and danger of nature firsthand.

---

Desert Camp

Gathered around a campfire, the group reflected on the day's harrowing experience. They had encountered a quicksand pit, and the only girl in the group had almost fallen in. She was practically their treasured mascot, so when she was in danger, a few of the muscular students had rushed in to save her, only to end up falling into the pit themselves. It was only when Yu intervened that they were saved from certain doom.

"We must always hold nature in reverence," Yu told the students. "Though it's cruel and unfeeling, everything we depend on comes from it. Even its harshness is something we humans have defined, so we should be grateful."

"Headmaster, I don't quite understand why we're traveling through such a dangerous place. There's nothing here but sand," the girl said, raising her hand.

Yu was nominally the headmaster of the Akademiya, so the students had the privilege of addressing him directly as such.

"The desert isn't as empty as it seems."

"Then what's here?"

"Why do you think you sank today? Beneath your feet was nothing but sand, yet it gave way."

"Huh?"

"Maybe there's an ancient tomb underneath."

"Really?"

"Who knows? You'll never find out unless you explore. Get some rest. If you want to check it out tomorrow, I'll take you back."

The students were visibly excited. Yu sighed internally. Such an adorable bunch—they take everything I say at face value.

But Yu hadn't expected his casual remark to turn out true!

---

Quicksand forms when water infiltrates sand, reducing friction between the grains. Yesterday's quicksand pit was caused by an underground river. Beside that river, they discovered an ancient tomb, its age immeasurable. Inside were murals and burial artifacts, though Yu couldn't decipher the writing on the murals.

Excited, the students explored every corner of the tomb, eager to find something extraordinary. They weren't there to loot; Yu decided they would bring everything back to set up a museum.

Just as they were examining the artifacts, they accidentally disturbed a guardian beast of the tomb—a strange, massive creature that sent the students into a panic.

Yu seized the opportunity for some hands-on teaching, instructing them on how to take down large beasts, identify their weak spots, and gather information on unknown creatures. Whenever they hit a knowledge wall, they could contact Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, who always had the answers.

---

To Yu's surprise, the rest of their journey turned into a streak of extraordinary luck. Wherever they went, they stumbled upon ancient tombs. One student even started recording patterns in their locations.

Upon returning, a few students became obsessed with tomb exploration. After graduation, they roamed Teyvat in search of ancient ruins. Their deep understanding of mechanisms, natural phenomena, and tomb placement eventually led them to form the most distinctive treasure-hunting group in Teyvat.

They called themselves the "Underground Scholars."

Unlike common treasure hoarders, they disdained working with such rabble. Operating in small teams of three to four, they located ancient tombs with precision and skillfully disarmed traps. They never stripped tombs bare, often leaving valuable relics behind and even performing rituals out of respect.

True to their scholarly roots, they documented their expeditions and passed down their knowledge to future generations. Their emblem? A token crafted from the claw of the guardian beast they had slain during that fateful journey.

Yu never expected his students to turn out this remarkable—first assassins who shocked the world, and now tomb raiders who traversed the land.
