Chapter 4: Chapter 4 Does Your Conscience Hurt?
Through the previous interaction, Cheng Qiaobei felt that Chen Ningxi was not very cooperative, so just in case, he planned to prepare for both possibilities.
Just as he was about to start the car, he saw Chen Ningxi hurrying out of the main gate and trying to hail a taxi by the roadside, but, coincidentally, there were no cabs available. How could Cheng Qiaobei pass up the opportunity to offer a courtesy? Determined, he started the car and pulled up in front of her.
The car window rolled down, and Chen Ningxi looked into the car, tilting her head.
"Mr. Chen, where are you going? I'll give you a lift."
Chen Ningxi wanted to refuse, but knew that Guo Heming would definitely not be home at noon.
Pressed for time, Chen Ningxi opened the car's back door and sat in, saying, "Thank you, I'm troubled to ask you to take me to Jiangnan Royal Residence."
Cheng Qiaobei noticed her urgency, and while driving, he joked, "I'm not very familiar with the roads here, so I'll need you to navigate."
Only then did Chen Ningxi remember that he had just mentioned it was only a month since he came to Danjiang City.
"Turn left at the next intersection."
Cheng Qiaobei merged into the leftmost lane, "Do you live there?"
Hesitating for a moment, Chen Ningxi replied, "...Yes."
Guided by her directions, they arrived outside Jiangnan Royal Residence, and Chen Ningxi thanked him again before getting off.
"Thank you for your trouble. I'm really sorry for delaying you, please let me transfer you the fare."
"Hey..." Cheng Qiaobei raised his hand to interrupt her, "Even if we need to avoid suspicion, it wasn't necessary. It's just on my way, no big deal. Don't mind it. If you transfer me the fare, it would seem like you're looking down on me. Bye."
Chen Ningxi too felt it inappropriate and nodded embarrassingly, "Goodbye, Manager Cheng."
After getting off the car, she took a few steps and looked back to find Cheng Qiaobei's car still parked there. She drew back her gaze and quickened her pace.
She had speculated that Cheng Qiaobei would take the opportunity of giving her a lift to bring up the topic of capacity expansion again, but she had guessed wrong, he didn't mention a word.
At that moment, inside the car, Cheng Qiaobei withdrew his gaze, the smile on his lips profound and meaningful.
The quickest way to break the ice is to create intersections.
…
The power company held a meeting for the mid-level and above leaders, which was exhausting after an afternoon. Upon returning home, Chen Ningxi was too lazy to cook dinner and simply ordered a portion of crab roe fried rice from a food delivery app.
While waiting for her meal, Chen Ningxi watered the flowers at home, and her phone on the coffee table chimed with two WeChat notification tones.
After unlocking the screen, she saw 2 unread messages on WeChat and clicked to find a prominent red number 2 above the avatar of north.
north: Mr. Chen, hello, I am Cheng Qiaobei.
north: When it's convenient for you, I would like to discuss the installation location with you, please respond when you see this.
The messages were polite and respectful, Chen Ningxi put down the watering can she was holding and sat on the sofa to reply:
[Good evening, please briefly discuss the proposed location for the site.]
The chat interface indicated the other party was typing…
Cheng Qiaobei had marked a total of 13 installation locations on the map, followed by his message filled with text and images, providing photos, installation plans, and routine maintenance methods for each corresponding point. His analysis was well-founded and very detailed.
However… all 13 installation locations were rejected by Chen Ningxi.
Cheng Qiaobei glanced at the clock, it was already eleven o'clock.
He tiredly took off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose, no longer wanting to type. He picked up his phone and pressed the voice message key:
"Mr. Chen, let's call it a day, thank you for your effort," and... "Thanks."
From the plans he had provided, it was clear that he had put in a great deal of effort. Many of the handwritten comments were meticulous. Now that all 13 locations had been rejected by her, Chen Ningxi felt somewhat apologetic.
She sent a message to Cheng Qiaobei.
Notification pop-ups appeared on both her laptop and phone screens.
Chen Ningxi: [I'm sorry I wasn't able to help you.]
Cheng Qiaobei put his glasses back on, sent a smiley emoji, and typed:
[Good night.]
Chen Ningxi: [Good night.]
Saying goodnight didn't mean going to sleep, just like bidding your friend goodnight on WeChat, only to encounter them later in King's Valley.
In different spaces, Chen Ningxi poured a cup of coffee and walked out of the kitchen, while Cheng Qiaobei carried his coffee cup back to his seat.
She inserted the USB drive into her laptop and began to view videos from the first one, while he opened a web page and typed "Danjiang City Hengshun District Zhoushan landslide accident" into the search bar and hit enter, bringing up related entries, moving the mouse to click on the first link.
In the wee hours, the laptop screen's light reflected on Chen Ningxi's pale face as she hit the video's pause button, where Guo Heming was pinning a woman beneath him.
The reality of the affair was laid out before her eyes, and after a thoughtful moment, there was finally a hint of relaxation in her gaze. She glanced at the time in the lower right corner of the screen, showing 00:46.
She closed her laptop, ready to put an end to this sordid relationship.
…
Chen Ningxi drove straight to Jiangnan Royal Residence, and upon entering, she saw a pair of women's short boots added on the doormat. She walked past the boots, a black handbag was tossed on the sofa, clothes scattered on the floor, and her favorite "Violence Bear" had a pair of sexy panties hung over it. Chen Ningxi's face showed an unprecedented calm.
The bedroom door was ajar. She pushed it slightly open with a hand and aimed her phone at the two people on the bed, snapping a picture and then recording a video.
She closed the door again and sat down on the living room sofa.
Now the drama was set to unfold.
Her relationship with Guo Heming was ticking down to the last seconds.
A ringtone from the room was heard, followed by a languid voice from the receiver.
"Hello?"
It was particularly quiet on the other end of the phone, only to hear Chen Ningxi's voice coldly say:
"I'm back."
Guo Heming's brain stalled for a few seconds, "Back? Back where?"
Chen Ningxi said, "I'm at the expressway exit, come pick me up."
Before Guo Heming could reply, the call was cut off.
He immediately got up to wake the woman beside him, "Wake up, get up, my girlfriend is coming back, you need to leave quickly."
After a few calls, there was no movement under the covers, Guo Heming pulled the person up, the woman disheveled and limp as a noodle, mumbling, "Hmm... what for... so sleepy."
"Stop sleeping," Guo Heming frantically started picking up his shirt and trousers from the floor while dressing, "My girlfriend's back, you need to get ready."
The woman opened her eyes, complaining, "Is she crazy? Coming back so early?"
"Hurry up, I'll take you home." He remembered something and reminded her, "Check everything, don't leave anything behind this time, last time you almost left your panties and she nearly found them."
The woman chuckled at the mention, hugging Guo Heming from behind, "Were you scared then? Let me feel, does your conscience hurt?"
"Shh... where are you touching."
The room filled again with the ambiguous laughter of the two.
Guo Heming checked the time and said, "Stop messing around, we don't have much time."
"I got it, I'm heading to the restroom."
The woman flirtatiously flipped her hair aside, threw on a piece of clothing and went out.
As soon as she opened the door, she froze, regressing into the room and closing the door in panic upon identifying the person on the sofa, saying to Guo Heming with a frantic tone:
"There's someone in the living room."
