Coal Archer

Chapter 7: Prologue

Class, Job, and Profession

These three will appear in your status window, determining your fate as a player. They define your role when clearing a dungeon or fighting: whether you are the Warrior, who cuts down monsters; the Tank, who takes hits and taunts enemies away from teammates; the Support, who provides buffs and heals fallen allies; or the Mage, whose destructive power surpasses everyone in the group, turning impossible battles into winnable ones. There are also specialized roles, such as the Appraiser or Leader, who guide others on what to do. This is basic knowledge that everyone should know. But something seems to be missing...

That something is the Archer, who provides additional support from the backline, taking out unforeseen enemies and ensuring that the Warrior and Tank can continue fighting on the frontline. So, how did this class become an abandoned one? To understand this, let's go back to the beginning—back when the 10 Trials of Dungeons did not exist, the Ranks in the system were nonexistent, magical diseases were feared daily, and only a small portion of humanity had awakened as players.

The Beginning of the End

In the year 1997, when humanity had less than 6 billion people, DVDs were emerging, the Mars Pathfinder landed, and Harry Potter made its debut, strange occurrences began to unfold. Unknown creatures appeared all over the world: grotesque, green, child-like beings; giant lizards lurking in city sewers, feeding on rats; shattered glass appearing in the sky a Portal like structures found in deep caves and high mountain areas; and tower-like structures discovered in the deep sea. These were the first appearances of monsters, dungeons, towers, and gates.

As the world celebrated the coming of the new year, an event took place that would change the structure of the world forever. When the Chinese clock struck midnight, the entire planet was introduced to monsters that killed humans without hesitation. Dungeons, towers, and gates began pouring out monsters endlessly. An asteroids struck Earth, destroying multiple countries. The Ring of Fire erupted, causing volcanoes to explode, earthquakes to shake the land, and tsunamis beyond what humanity could withstand.

It was said that it only took 19 hours for humanity to drop from 6 billion to 147 million survivors. By this time, one might expect the survivors to awaken supernatural powers, as in fantasy stories. Yet, it didn't happen. Humanity struggled to adapt to this new world. As they managed to survive, demons began appearing across the surviving countries. They introduced themselves as survivors from another world that had faced the same fate as Earth.

Humanity, losing hope, felt a connection with them. They trusted the demons, took them into their survivor camps, and treated them like their own. However, 10 years after the first appearance of monsters, humanity's numbers had dwindled to just 17 million survivors. As expected, the demons began killing, eating, enslaving, and treating the survivors as playthings.

The Goddess of Mercy

In the year 2007 10 years after the Calamity struck, as humanity continued to lose numbers, a god introduced herself. She announced herself as the Goddess of Mercy and asked for forgiveness from humanity for being late. As she introduced herself, she gifted the remaining survivors a **System**. This system would choose a portion of humanity to awaken supernatural powers, allowing them to grow stronger and gain new abilities as they leveled up. With the existence of the system, the chosen ones began to level up and fight off the demons and monsters that plagued the world.

The Three Great Heroes

Among these chosen ones were three individuals who would become legendary: the Hero of Swords, the Hero of Healing, and the Hero of Shield.

The Hero of Swords

A Chinese citizen who managed to survive with the help of others, the Hero of Swords was the only one chosen as a player in a group of elderly survivors aged 60 to 80. These elders, who shared the same master as the Hero of Swords, decided to keep his existence hidden and take on the punishment to raise him and wait for him to grow stronger. With his power, he struck down demons with ease and continued to save the remaining survivors. Over time, he became a symbol of hope and strength.

The Hero of Healing

A Canadian woman with a pure heart who worshipped the self-introduced gods while others doubted her existence, thinking she were the same as the demons who had betrayed humanity. The Goddess of Mercy, seeing her faith, decided to take the risk of losing her godhood and being erased from existence to grant her a drop of her divine power—a power completely opposite to the darkness they faced. With this power, the Hero of Healing vanquished thousands of demons with a single chant, purified the land, and created safe areas where monsters could not exist. Her actions allowed humanity to regain its footing.

The Hero of Shield

A Zealander who was vacationing in the Philippines—a country in the Ring of Fire—when the calamity struck. Forced to adapt to endless natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and asteroids, he developed a resilient body. It was said that to save newborn children's and pregnant women from an erupting volcano, he pushed a truck carrying them on his own for three days straight to escape the eruption zone, while others fought off the monsters emerging from the volcano. With his well-built body and monstrous strength, he defended the frontline, allowing survivors and warriors to gather their strength. Later, he created a barrier over the last three surviving lands on Earth. This barrier, cast over 1,000 years ago, remains visible even in the current era where Zane lives, growing stronger over time.
