Black Rebirth – Asta’s Journey in Soul Society

Chapter 29: Chapter 28: The Path to Bankai and an Unexpected Meeting

Asta's feet pounded against the stone paths of the Seireitei, his breath steady despite the weight of his ambitions. He had been training relentlessly since joining the Eleventh Division, fighting, learning, and pushing himself to new limits. Yet, despite everything, he knew he had only taken the first steps on his true journey.

Kenpachi's words from their most recent battle still echoed in his mind.

"If you want to get stronger, then keep fighting. And if that's not enough… then find the power buried inside you and tear it out with your own hands!"

Bankai.

The word alone carried an overwhelming sense of power. It was the next stage, the ultimate evolution of a Zanpakutō. Only a handful of Shinigami had ever achieved it, and now, Asta wanted to be one of them.

But how?

He had no idea how to unlock it. Still, he wasn't the type to overthink things—if he wanted it, then he'd just have to go and take it!

A smirk stretched across his face as he walked through the training grounds, his hands twitching with energy. The Eleventh Division had some of the strongest fighters, and training with them had been exhilarating. But even with all the battles he had fought since joining, he hadn't come any closer to awakening his Bankai.

"Tch, whatever. If Bankai is locked behind some ridiculous trial, then I'll just smash through it!"

Just as he was about to find an opponent to spar with, a familiar voice called out to him.

"Asta?"

He turned his head to see Renji Abarai standing nearby, arms crossed and a smirk playing on his lips. His red hair was tied back, and his lieutenant's badge gleamed under the sunlight.

"What's got you running around like a maniac this time?" Renji asked, raising an eyebrow.

Asta grinned widely. "Oh, you know, just trying to figure out how to get even stronger! I'm gonna unlock my Bankai soon, and when I do, I'll be unstoppable!"

Renji let out a small laugh. "Tch, you don't even know how to unlock it yet, do you?"

Asta's grin faltered for a second before he shook his head. "Nope! But I'll figure it out!"

Renji sighed, placing a hand on his hip. "You really are something else. But unlocking Bankai isn't something you can brute force your way through."

Asta raised a brow. "Then how do I do it?"

Before Renji could answer, another voice—calm and composed—interrupted them.

"You have quite the ambitious goal."

Asta turned to see a woman approaching, her white Shihakushō contrasting against her dark hair. Her violet eyes studied him curiously, and there was a quiet strength about her that made Asta straighten his posture.

Renji gave a small nod. "Asta, this is Rukia Kuchiki. And standing behind her is Captain Byakuya Kuchiki."

Asta blinked, finally noticing the tall figure beside Rukia. Byakuya exuded an air of authority, his noble features unreadable as he gazed at Asta with cool indifference.

Asta's grin widened, and without hesitation, he pointed at Rukia.

"Oh! You're the one Renji's always talking about!"

Rukia blinked in surprise. "What?"

Asta continued. "Yeah! He's always going on about how strong you are and how much you've been through. He never shuts up about it!"

Renji coughed loudly, his face turning red. "O-Oi, shut up, Asta!"

Rukia smirked slightly, while Byakuya merely observed.

Asta crossed his arms. "So, since you're here, you must be really strong too! Maybe you know something about unlocking Bankai?"

Rukia hummed in thought. "Bankai, huh? That's no small goal."

Byakuya finally spoke, his voice composed and authoritative.

"It takes years of dedicated training to achieve Bankai. Few Shinigami ever reach that level."

Asta smirked. "Well, I don't have years! I gotta do it now!"

Renji sighed. "You really don't change, huh?"

Byakuya studied Asta for a moment before speaking again.

"You wield an unusual Zanpakutō. If you wish to achieve Bankai, you must first understand the spirit within your blade."

Asta nodded. "That's the plan! I've been hearing my Zanpakutō's voice more and more lately. I think it's trying to tell me something."

Rukia raised a brow. "That's a good sign. Your Zanpakutō spirit will test you. If you wish to attain Bankai, you must be prepared for whatever it throws at you."

Asta grinned, cracking his knuckles. "Bring it on! No test is gonna stop me!"

Byakuya turned slightly as if losing interest. "Then we shall see if your resolve is as strong as your words."

With that, he began walking away. Rukia gave Asta a small nod before following, leaving Renji behind with him.

Renji sighed. "Man, you really don't know how to hold back, huh?"

Asta laughed. "Nope! But that's why you like me, right?"

Renji rolled his eyes but smirked. "Alright then, if you're serious about this, I'll help you out. Training for Bankai is brutal, but if anyone can do it through sheer willpower, it's you."

Asta's grin widened. "Awesome! Let's get started!"

As the two began walking toward the training grounds, Asta felt a surge of excitement.

Bankai was within his reach.

And Asta was going to seize it.
