After I Let Go, She Regretted It Deeply

Chapter 4

Chapter 4: I Heard You’re Getting a Divorce:

I went home and packed a few things. Before Lin Muyao returned, I moved directly into a hotel.

Until everything was settled, I planned to stay at the hotel to avoid seeing her. There was no need to make things harder for myself.

More than half a month passed in the blink of an eye, and I successfully completed my resignation process.

When my colleagues found out I was leaving, they insisted on throwing me a farewell party.

I couldn’t refuse them, nor did I want to disregard their goodwill, so I agreed.

The gathering was set at a well-known restaurant in Beijing. The moment I stepped into the private room, a party popper exploded next to my ear, showering me in colorful streamers.

After tidying up my clothes and taking a seat, everyone at the table raised their glasses to toast me.

Having worked together for several years, I couldn’t help but feel a bit reluctant to leave.

After a few rounds of drinks, the head of the client relations team suddenly leaned over. “I heard you’re getting a divorce?”

She was a capable woman in her twenties, and I could tell she had feelings for me. However, because I was married, she had always restrained herself.

The moment she spoke, I already guessed what she was going to say next.

Sure enough, she smiled and tested the waters. “My parents have been pushing me to get married lately. I do have feelings for you—why don’t we give it a shot?”

Some colleagues started teasing, and a hint of expectation flashed in her eyes.

I raised an eyebrow and rejected her in a joking manner.

“Forget it. If you take a divorced man home, your parents might get so angry they’d end up in the hospital. I’d rather not be the reason you get scolded.”

The expectation in her eyes dimmed, and her smile became forced.

“They’re not that extreme. Besides, I’d be there to shield you.”

Just as I was thinking about how to respond, a hand suddenly landed on my shoulder, and a familiar voice rang out behind me.

“I didn’t expect my husband to be so popular when I wasn’t around.”

It was Lin Muyao. She had been away on a business trip for half a month.

She looked at the woman and said with a half-smile, “Team Leader Chen, my husband and I haven’t divorced yet. Isn’t it a little too early to be digging the wall?”

She wrapped her arms around my neck and rested her chin on top of my head. “Besides, he only loves me. There’s no room for anyone else in his heart.”

No one had expected Lin Muyao to suddenly show up—not even me.

I thought I wouldn’t see her again before leaving.

The atmosphere turned awkward. Team Leader Chen looked embarrassed and quickly apologized. “Manager Lin, sorry, I was just joking. Please don’t take it seriously.”

The others followed suit, trying to ease the tension.

Lin Muyao smiled, but her tone carried a hint of warning. “Next time, don’t make such jokes. They’re not funny at all.”

Then, she grabbed my hand. “I need to talk to you. Let’s step outside.”

To avoid making things more awkward for the others, I had no choice but to follow her out.

Outside the restaurant, we stood face to face.

I pulled my hand away and asked coldly, “What is it?”

Lin Muyao’s eyes reddened instantly, as if my action had stung her.

She questioned sharply, “Why didn’t you tell me you resigned?”

“If I hadn’t found out in time and rushed back, were you planning to disappear without a word?”

Looking at the tears welling in her eyes, I resisted the urge to wipe them away and replied calmly, “My resignation is my own business. I don’t need to report it to you, do I?”

“What about the divorce? Is that just your business too?”

She pulled a court summons from her bag and threw it at me.

“Why haven’t you withdrawn the divorce lawsuit? I already explained to you—it was just a misunderstanding. Wangchuan and I aren’t what you think.”

“I thought you were joking. I didn’t expect you to actually go through with it.”

She looked at me in disappointment. “Song Shiyue, do you think our marriage is some kind of game? Who gave you the right to make such a unilateral decision?”

I glanced at the summons on the ground and frowned slightly.

“I told you about the divorce lawsuit before. You were the one who didn’t take it seriously.”

“If I had kissed another woman, would you still be acting like it’s no big deal?”

Since she had come all this way, I decided to lay everything out once and for all.

“Lin Muyao, I care a lot about your relationship with Zhang Wangchuan. Regular friends don’t kiss each other.”

“You can’t let go of him, so I’m setting you free.”

“Let’s end this peacefully. I’m tired of dragging this on.”

Furious, she pushed me. “Song Shiyue, you’re just an irresponsible jerk!”

“I already told you, nothing happened between me and Wangchuan. Why won’t you believe me? What right do you have to make decisions for me?”

She grabbed my collar, shouting at me with red, tear-filled eyes.

Based on my understanding of her, she was waiting for me to soften and comfort her.

But I didn’t. I simply lowered my gaze and silently looked at her.

Her tears started falling without warning, and she collapsed against my chest, cursing me over and over as a heartless bastard.

I sighed helplessly. No matter how much I tried to stay indifferent, I couldn’t completely ignore her pain.

Just as I was about to take out a tissue to wipe her tears, Zhang Wangchuan suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

He called out frantically, “Yaoyao!”

Lin Muyao lifted her head from my chest, wiped her tears with the back of her hand, and turned to look at him in surprise.

“Wangchuan? What are you doing here?”

Panting, he said urgently, “Yaoyao, my mom had a heart attack! It’s too late to buy a train ticket. Can you drive me home?”

“You know I’ve had a psychological trauma since the accident. I can’t drive.”

“It’s only a three-hour drive. I really had no choice but to come to you for help.”

Lin Muyao’s expression became serious, and she immediately pulled out her phone. “I’ll book a car for you. You can take a hired ride back.”

Zhang Wangchuan quickly pressed down on her phone screen and pleaded, “Yaoyao, please, just come with me.”

“My mom has been wanting to see you. She knows how much you’ve helped me since I came to Beijing and has been wanting to thank you in person.”

“We grew up together. If she wakes up and sees you, she’ll be really happy.”

Lin Muyao hesitated and glanced at me. “But I…”

Zhang Wangchuan urged, “Yaoyao, don’t overthink it. It’s just a visit to see an elder.”

“Mr. Song isn’t that petty, right? He wouldn’t seriously get jealous over this, would he?”

I let out a cold laugh but didn’t say anything.

Lin Muyao was clearly wavering. She clenched my hand tightly and earnestly explained, “Wangchuan has trauma and can’t drive. I’m just helping him as a friend, and I’ll take the chance to visit his mother. Don’t overthink it.”

“And as for the divorce, I don’t agree to it. We’ll talk about it when I get back.”

After saying that, she saw that I didn’t respond, so she could only leave with Zhang Wangchuan.

Watching the two of them walk away in a hurry, I suddenly found the whole thing laughable.
