Chapter 8: Family Ties
The families were worlds apart. My family, the ones who raised me and made me who I was, ran a finance company, though no one would call it an ordinary one. We weren't exactly a shining example of ethical business practices. Our company was built on lending money at exorbitant rates, and to many people, we were nothing more than loan sharks. The kind of business that thrived on desperation, taking advantage of those who had nowhere else to turn. I hated the way it made me feel, but it was the life I'd been born into.
Then there was Phillip's family. They were the complete opposite. Phillip's family was well-respected, deeply rooted in the upper echelons of society. The Becker family was known for their power, their wealth, and their influence. They ran legitimate, high-profile businesses and had a reputation that made them untouchable. The kind of family that wouldn't even glance in the direction of someone like me, not unless they had a very specific reason to.
And yet, here we were. Our families were about as different as two families could be. It was almost laughable that they would ever cross paths, that my stepsister Tila would ever be in the same room as someone like Phillip. But that was the thing about my stepmother, Josey. She always had a way of bending the rules, manipulating situations to her advantage, and finding ways to get what she wanted. And in this case, what she wanted was to secure Tila's place by Phillip's side.
Josey had a plan. She had arranged the conditions for Tila and Phillip to meet, and she'd done it in the most calculating way. I had to admit, she was good at this. She wasn't above bribing people to make sure things went in her favor. And in this case, she used a painting—a piece of artwork she knew would interest someone in Phillip's family. She bribed a madam with that painting, creating a scenario where Tila just so happened to "accidentally" bump into Phillip and his mother at an event.
It was a move straight out of Josey's playbook—manipulative and designed to put Tila in the perfect position to catch Phillip's eye. And, of course, it worked. Phillip's mother, a woman who was always meticulously involved in her family's affairs, immediately took notice of Tila. She saw the potential to elevate her son's status even further by pairing him with someone like Tila, who was both beautiful and well-connected, despite the chaos of her family's background.
Now, Tila was practically convinced that Phillip was hers for the taking. She had everything planned out, the way she always did. But I wasn't going to sit back and let her have him. I couldn't. She had done so much already to get herself in this position, but now, it was my turn to change things. And I wasn't going to do it the way she did, with games and manipulation. I had to outsmart her, find a way to get close to Phillip, and make him see me as more than just an option—make him see me as the one who was worth his time.
But there was one problem. Phillip was no easy man to approach. If anything, he was almost unreachable. He had high standards, far higher than any man I had ever met. He wasn't interested in superficial things, and he certainly wasn't interested in someone who was pretending to be something they weren't. He had a reputation to maintain, and he only surrounded himself with people who could meet his expectations.
I knew I couldn't rely on anything superficial to get his attention. I wasn't going to try to outdo Tila in her attempts to manipulate and control the situation. That would never work on someone like Phillip. If I wanted him to see me, to notice me, I had to be smart. I had to show him who I really was, not just the person I thought he might like.
But that wasn't the only challenge. Phillip's family was tough to approach. It wasn't just Phillip himself—his mother, his grandmother, and even his younger sister were all formidable people in their own right. They weren't easily impressed, and they certainly didn't just let anyone into their circle. Phillip's family had standards that went beyond even his own. They were protective of him, and anyone who wanted to get close to him had to pass through them first.
That meant I had to be careful. I couldn't just walk into their world and expect them to accept me. They would need to see that I wasn't just after their son, that I wasn't another opportunist trying to climb the social ladder. It wasn't enough to charm Phillip—his family had to like me too, or my chances would be ruined before they even began.
I thought about the things I would need to do. I had to be subtle, play my cards carefully. I couldn't afford to make any mistakes. If I was going to stand a chance with Phillip, I had to win over not only him but his entire family.
His mother, for example, was fiercely protective of her son. She wasn't going to let any girl get close to him unless she could prove herself. It wasn't about being the prettiest or the most charming—it was about showing that I could be a good match for him. That meant being more than just the daughter of a controversial business owner. It meant being someone who could hold her own in their world, someone who could fit into their society and not disrupt the carefully built image they had worked so hard to maintain.
And then there was Phillip himself. He wasn't someone who could be easily swayed by looks or charm. He valued intelligence, strength, and independence. He didn't want a woman who needed him; he wanted someone who could stand beside him, someone who was strong enough to face the challenges his life brought. I wasn't sure I could measure up to his expectations, but I wasn't about to give up. This was my chance, and I wasn't going to waste it.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized how much of a challenge this would be. Phillip wasn't like the men I was used to, the ones who could be manipulated with a few kind words or a carefully planned move. He was his own person, with his own mind, and he wouldn't be impressed by someone who wasn't genuine. He was looking for someone who was real, someone who could match his intellect and his ambition.
It wasn't going to be easy, but I had to try.
I had no idea how it would all play out. I didn't know if I could even make Phillip see me as more than just someone in his periphery. But I was determined to try. And this time, I wasn't going to back down, not until I had given everything I had.
So, I braced myself for the difficult road ahead. Phillip was a man who didn't fall easily, but I had no intention of giving up just because the odds were against me. The game was on. And this time, I was going t
o make sure I played it to win.
