Chapter 147: Chapter 147: Breakout
The High Priest's gaze pierced through the wall's crack, locking eyes with Richard. An indescribable mental pressure bore down on him, causing his heart to skip a beat.
Ulysses suddenly knocked Richard aside. Before Richard could react, a starlight beam shot through the wall, narrowly missing his head.
Had Ulysses been a moment slower, Richard's skull would have been pierced by the starlight.
"Caw, that insect spotted you!"
The High Priest, noticing his attack had failed, was slightly surprised.
"He actually dodged it."
But then, a mental message emanated from the black crystal on his forehead:
"Insect Inhart, capture the wizard creature near my usual prayer chamber."
...
"The insect's senses are incredibly sharp."
Richard followed Ulysses, speeding through the corridors and heading swiftly towards the Mother God Temple.
Although uncertain if this was a trap, fleeing seemed the best course.
Descending the sloped path, Richard and Ulysses suddenly encountered a squad of Mother Insect Guards.
"Damn it!"
Richard cursed, raising his staff to cast Obliterate Heart. But Ulysses' black flames flared, his wings flapping as he streaked through the guards like black lightning.
"Caw, taken care of!" Ulysses called back.
In the next instant, four dull thuds echoed as the guards fell, their black crystals inexplicably shattered.
"So fast, so powerful!" Richard was astounded.
Was this the true power of Ulysses at stable second-tier strength?
"Caw, don't dawdle. If that insect finishes with your kin, we're both stuck here. He can definitely summon the old insect's avatar!"
At Ulysses' urging, Richard quickly bypassed the fallen guards, collecting their bodies.
Even with a head-sized piece of Orichalcum, insects were still valuable. One could never have too much Orichalcum.
Ideally, Richard dreamed of crafting a suit of armor entirely from pure Orichalcum.
As they moved through the corridor, Richard saw Ulysses abruptly turn, spotting a familiar figure rushing toward them.
"Shit, not this bastard again!"
It was none other than the Mother Insect God's chosen—Insect Inhart, who had previously driven Richard into the Abyss of Origin!
Seeing the duo, Insect Inhart was elated, his wings spreading as he surged forward.
"Truly, you've walked into hell willingly."
With the perfect setup, Insect Inhart vowed to sacrifice this duo to the Mother Insect God.
Boom!
Before he could advance, a black flame chain bound him in place.
Ulysses spat a spark, his stable second-tier strength allowing him to deploy tricks without worsening his soul injury.
Though wary of the chosen, Ulysses had countermeasures ready.
Flying past Richard, Ulysses veered into a side passage.
"Caw, this way!"
...
Outside the Mother God Temple, Lawrence and Ellie ceased their assault upon receiving Richard's message.
"Looks like Richard noticed something," Lawrence said, eyeing the battlefield.
He, too, sensed something amiss.
The insect defenses were suspiciously weak.
Even as first-circle wizards, they were evenly matched with the insects outside the temple, pushing them back in some areas.
This was unusual.
As one of the insects' most sacred sites, the Mother God Temple should have far stronger defenses.
"Ellie, we're leaving."
Lawrence made a decisive call. As an experienced wizard, his instincts told him Richard's warning was valid.
"Aren't we waiting for Richard?" Ellie hesitated.
"No, we leave now!" Lawrence insisted. "Richard is strong and resourceful. Following him will only hinder him."
Lawrence recalled the crow that could obscure the blue fungus.
He wasn't sure what the blue fungus was, but the Mushroom Lands' reaction suggested it was extraordinary.
A crow capable of blocking it was not to be underestimated.
He even suspected the crow might be a third-tier creature!
Ellie glanced deeply toward the temple's depths.
She knew Lawrence was right; she would be of little help to Richard.
"Let's go!"
...
On the outskirts of the temple's settlement, squads of insects were busy setting up equipment. Any wizard present would recognize the installation as miniaturized Mother God cannons.
Unlike battlefield cannons, these were small and looked diminutive.
"Sir, the mini Mother God cannons are ready!" A warrior insect reported to a silver-armored warrior insect.
Nearby, under a priest insect's guidance, a mound of flesh sprouted a black chitinous shell.
Though losing ground on the battlefield, the Black Crystal Insects had learned much and developed new warfare capabilities.
These mini cannons were a special weapon developed by an insect kingdom for hive assaults.
Previously, no insect had thought to miniaturize the Mother God cannon, but after this, tunnel skirmishes might become obsolete.
"Good, now we wait."
The silver-armored insect twitched an antenna, peering into the tunnel's dark depths.
Half an hour ago, he received an urgent command from the High Priest to set up the cannons and prepare for wizard creatures emerging from the temple.
Honestly, he thought the High Priest was joking.
With such tight security, how could wizards infiltrate the temple? Even if they did, it would be just a few, not warranting such a weapon.
Upon confirming the High Priest's seriousness, he complied.
Warriors must obey priests' commands, especially in wartime.
The silver-armored insect approached the squad's sole priest insect.
"Priest, why did the High Priest issue such a strange order?"
The priest glanced at the warrior, emitting a hiss.
"Sigh, I have no idea, but the High Priest's wisdom surpasses ours. We just follow orders."
Then, the priest glanced around, lowering its voice.
"I heard we've been infiltrated by a wizard spy. Our patrol routes were leaked."
"What!" The warrior's antennae stiffened, whipping through the air.
"How could a Black Crystal Insect become a wizard spy!"
The priest smacked him: "You fool, keep it down!"
Realizing his outburst, the warrior bowed slightly.
"It's inconceivable that a Mother's offspring would spy for wizards."
The priest hissed softly, reassuring him:
"Probably forced. Those wizard creatures have many vile methods, including forced enslavement.
Some might become wizard slaves to survive, but I believe no insect would willingly serve wizards."
...
Outside the Mother God Temple, as Lawrence and Ellie departed, seasoned wizards sensed something was off.
The insect counterattack was too weak.
With a thunderous boom, dozens of second-circle wizards burst from the temple wall, leaving a straight path to its depths.
They had carved a path through the temple itself!
"Attention all wizards, this is a trap! Prepare to break through!"
A second-circle wizard cloaked in lightning shouted to the ground wizards.
Moments ago, guided by the puppet wizard, they reached the dungeon holding the captive wizards.
But upon arrival, the puppet wizard collapsed like a marionette without strings.
Simultaneously, the supposed dungeons revealed their true form. Cannons, primed and ready, fired in unison, acidic energy balls vaporizing a dozen unfortunate wizards.
Only then did they realize the trap.
Fortunately, the insects' setup was incomplete, and the High Priest was occupied with the struggling puppet wizard, allowing their escape.
At that moment, Richard reached the temple's outskirts, scanning the battlefield to confirm Ellie and Lawrence's absence. He sighed in relief.
It seemed they had escaped early.
In the sky, the surviving second-circle wizards split into four groups, dispersing in different directions.
The ground wizards followed suit, each choosing their breakout path.
Richard and Ulysses joined the throng, ready to break through with the main force.
Amid the chaos, Richard was unsure of the insects' full preparations and decided to stay with the group to gauge the situation.
With so many wizards together, even without white wizards, they were a formidable force.
Against a third-tier insect, they could still inflict significant damage.
Rumble!
The breakout wizards swung their staffs, launching head-sized purple lightning balls at the advancing insects, lightning snakes dancing and charring dozens of warrior insects.
Though successful, the second-circle wizards felt unease rather than triumph.
These insects were all first-tier, too weak for a blockade.
But the battle's pace left no room for thought. Leading the charge, the wizard pressed toward the tunnel.
With hundreds of wizards in tow, they could shred any encirclement.
Yet upon entering the tunnel, they understood the insects' feeble resistance.
"Mini Mother God cannons, ready! Fire!"
