Chapter 145: Chapter 145: The Mother God Temple
Despite the tight security of the city, there were still many opportunities for wizards to infiltrate.
The fungal treehouses where cultivating insects lived on the city's outskirts provided Richard with the perfect opportunity.
Using Shadow Traverse and Shadow Infiltration, Richard easily avoided the airborne moth patrols and entered the city. Lawrence accompanied Ellie, using shadow magic to bring her into the city as well.
But this was just the beginning.
Richard signaled to Lawrence and Ellie, and the three quickly moved through the giant fungi, soon entering the building district.
This area was home to veteran insects—old and experienced, with significant contributions to the hive. The insect kingdom gathered them here to consult their expertise when planning strategies.
However, perhaps due to the proximity to the front lines, Richard saw no elderly insects other than warrior insects.
"Something's not right."
Watching the warrior insects moving between buildings, Richard felt an inexplicable unease.
Although this area was near the front lines, it wasn't a primary attack direction, so transferring all the support insects to the rear seemed unnecessary.
Richard signaled the other two to be cautious before entering the building district, advancing toward the pyramid.
In the shadows of the sandstone structures, Richard watched silently as a squad of Mother Insect Guards marched past him.
For first-tier insects, shadow infiltration was an unbreakable stealth technique.
Opposite him, Lawrence fully integrated into the shadows, while Ellie used invisibility and breath concealment to evade detection.
Though tempted by the Mother Insect Guards, Richard knew it wasn't the right time to act.
Their mission was to distract the insects around the pyramid, disrupting their sightlines. Acting prematurely would ruin the plan.
After the patrol passed, the trio continued toward the Mother God Temple.
At the temple's base, transport insects streamed through the main gate, bearing mountain-like loads of food, steadily entering the temple.
They carried sustenance for the Mother Insect, whose reproduction required a constant food supply.
Suddenly, a ball of fire erupted from the food, striking a priest insect inspecting the supplies.
Boom!
The fiery explosion tore the priest insect apart.
Simultaneously, shadows emerged from the residential area, and spells flew en masse, catching the temple's insect guards off guard. The outer defenses lost nearly half their number instantly.
"Enemy attack! Wizard creatures are attacking! Protect the Mother God Temple!"
A warrior insect in silver armor emitted a sharp screech, spreading its wings and instantly appearing beside a wizard.
In a flash of cold light, the wizard was diced into meat paste before they could react.
The disparity between first and second-tier creatures was immense; most wizards couldn't defeat higher-tier foes.
But the silver-armored insect, despite its prowess, was still just an insect.
Several black wizards targeted it instantly, their spells—lightning, fire, auroras—shredding half its body.
The silver-armored insect screeched, its flesh regenerating two new limbs.
It glared at the wizards, its dark eyes glinting red.
"Wizards! Die!"
With a flap of its wings, the silver-armored insect dove into the wizards, its lone blade-arm flashing, slicing two wizards to pieces in seconds.
But its prowess was short-lived. A shadowy figure wreathed in black flame flashed past, severing its head instantly.
"Caw, the head of a second-tier insect smells divine!"
Ulysses flew into the temple, landing on a black-robed wizard's shoulder.
"Caw, this is the old insect's temple. You lot dare storm it?" Ulysses remarked, surprised by his surroundings.
Richard had just released him from his pocket, and he hadn't realized they were in the Mother Insect God's temple.
"Just rescuing people," Richard replied coolly.
According to the plan, these first-circle wizards were meant to draw fire away from those penetrating deeper into the temple, scattering the insect forces and disrupting their vision.
"Caw, Richard, interested in a big score?" Ulysses asked, eyes gleaming.
"What do you mean?" Richard frowned.
"Caw, I sense faith energy in the temple. If you collect some, not even the old insect's avatar could stop us!" Ulysses boasted.
"Hmm? Won't refining faith energy worsen your injuries?"
Richard eyed Ulysses suspiciously. The crow was always scheming for personal gain. Why would he eagerly suggest something detrimental?
"Caw, isn't that why I have you?" Ulysses grinned. "Your furnace can even extract laws, so purifying some faith energy should be easy. Pure faith energy will ensure your safety and let me use some divine techniques—a win-win!"
Richard considered for a moment, finding no flaw in Ulysses' logic.
"Lead the way. We don't have much time. We must find the faith energy before the rescue mission concludes."
"Caw, plenty of time!"
...
Deep within the temple, a group of black-robed wizards sped down a tunnel toward their target.
These were the mission's main force—the second-circle black wizards.
Led by the puppet wizard, they charged through the temple, heading straight for the dungeons holding the captive wizards.
The temple's layout was complex, with paths hidden in places defying wizard logic.
As the wizard team rounded a corner, a squad of golden Mother Insect Guards emerged from somewhere, wings buzzing as they advanced.
Boom!
A wizard unleashed a stream of fire, incinerating the insects blocking their path.
Such narrow corridors were perfect for spells like these.
But before the flames could dissipate, a Mother Insect Guard with a crimson-gold shell emerged, blade-arms glowing with blinding gold light.
It was a second-tier Mother Insect Guard!
Snap!
The wizard's mana shield shattered, and the insect's blade dismembered him in an instant.
But before it could attack again, a metallic grinding sound filled the air. A giant metal serpent slithered from beneath a wizard's robe, coiling around the insect. Runes studded the serpent's metal spikes, and it constricted, shredding the guard.
Afterward, the serpent returned to the wizard's robe. The wizard looked at the puppet wizard calmly.
"Declan, why didn't you save him?"
The puppet wizard glanced at the wizard, emitting a powerful magical aura.
"I owe you no explanations. A wizard killed by natives deserves it!"
The wizards fell silent. Among black wizards, strength was respected, and no one challenged the puppet wizard's authority.
However, some wizards familiar with Declan harbored doubts.
"Is this really Declan's true body?"
Rumble...
Deep within the temple, a stone door creaked open, and a golden-armored warrior insect emerged, kneeling beside a black-robed wizard.
"Master, it's done. The High Priest is poisoned, and the other priests are distracted by your subordinates. The treasure room is unguarded except for me."
The black-robed wizard gently stroked the warrior insect's head. At first glance, the hand appeared human, but closer inspection revealed joint seams, hinting at spherical joints beneath.
"Number One, excellent work." The puppet wizard praised his puppet.
Creating this third-tier golden warrior insect as a puppet had cost him many treasures. But it was worth it.
The puppet wizard passed through the stone door into a grand hall, at the end of which stood a massive statue of a black crystal insect. Before it were four golden pedestals, crafted from rare Orichalcum, worthy of the treasures they held.
Each pedestal bore a relic of the Mother Insect God.
"Cackle, Mother Insect God relics—four of them! Even archmages would envy this."
The puppet wizard cackled, approaching the pedestals.
The relics were: a golden insect shell—Armor of the Insect God, a golden blade-arm—Blade of the Insect God, a fist-sized golden amber—Blood of the Insect God, and the object the puppet wizard couldn't take his eyes off since entering—the golden egg—Egg of the Insect God.
These relics were either possessions of the Black Mushroom Insect Kingdom or acquired from conquered kingdoms. Such treasures were rare, with a kingdom owning at most two or three.
The puppet wizard gazed greedily at the Egg of the Insect God. It was said to be an attempt by the Mother Insect God to replicate itself before birthing the Mother Insect—containing its primal essence and rules, especially rules!
This relic supposedly allowed the Mother Insect to produce more eggs.
Time was short, so the puppet wizard reached for the Egg of the Insect God without delay.
But as his fingers touched it, a beam of starlight shot from the egg, striking him.
"Starlight Seal!"
The puppet wizard's expression changed, struggling to break free with magic.
In the next moment, a starlight net rose from beneath, ensnaring him.
