Chapter 138: Chapter 138: The Chosen One Arrives
In the upper levels of the underground hive, a cloaked figure passed through the tunnels and entered a small, secluded chamber.
Once inside, the cloak fell softly to the ground, and a black raven emerged, landing on the fungal-covered wall.
Within the cave, a figure in wizard robes was heating a test tube in his hand. As the temperature rose, the liquid inside began to boil, its blood-red color fading to a clear, pale blue.
Once the tube cooled, the wizard uncorked it and drank the contents in one swift motion.
"No trouble, I assume?" Richard inquired.
"Caw, what trouble could I possibly have?" Ulysses boasted. "Those little bugs wouldn't have even made it to my table before."
"That's good."
With that, Richard closed his eyes and began channeling magic to help his body absorb the pale blue liquid.
The primary ingredient of this liquid was the hatching pool fluid, detoxified and highly beneficial to a wizard's physique.
When consumed at a dosage of fifty milliliters every twenty-four hours, after thirty doses, a first-circle wizard could enhance their constitution by one point (excluding those at the extreme limit of 99.9).
Of course, this improvement wasn't limitless.
After boosting ten points, further consumption would cease to enhance constitution, though it could still serve as a healing tonic.
"Caw, how's the haul?" Ulysses asked, curious about the tube in Richard's hand.
He could sense the life-active substances within, a temptation to any flesh-based life form, compelling them to consume it.
"Not bad. Ten kilograms of hatching liquid and two eggs should be enough for us to lie low for a while."
"Caw, lie low?" Ulysses was surprised. "Is there a problem with this method?"
Richard shook his head. "No problem, just that frequent actions increase the risk of being caught."
Statistically, the more often one acts, the higher the chance of discovery. Richard knew his limits well—a first-circle wizard couldn't dominate within the hive, so minimizing actions was prudent.
Besides, the hatching fluid he had was sufficient to boost his power considerably, negating the need for frequent operations.
"Caw, alright," Ulysses conceded. "You're the boss, you decide."
...
Bang!
A priest insect clad in moon-white silk slammed a clay tablet onto the ground.
Before it, several warrior insects in golden armor stood with their heads bowed, antennae drooping.
The priest insect issued a sharp, screeching reprimand:
"Five years! Those wizard creatures have been infiltrating our rear for five years! In that time, over a thousand granaries burned, two hundred small hatching pools and thirty medium ones destroyed, and even the large pool at Eisen Settlement was attacked last week!
Now you're telling me, after searching the entire hive, you've found mere dozens of first-circle wizard creatures!"
Bang!
The priest insect stomped on the shattered tablet.
"Are you saying those warehouses and pools were targeted by a bunch of first-circle wizard creatures? That the wizard creature who escaped the Grand Priest was a bunch of first-circle wizards?"
Faced with the priest insect's scolding, the golden-armored warrior insects remained silent.
Outside, they were commanding three-star warrior insects, but here, they were subordinates who had failed in their duties, sinners of the Black Mushroom Insect Kingdom.
If not for the Grand Priest's presence and numerous three-star priests and warriors during last week's large pool attack, the wizard creatures might have succeeded.
The Black Mushroom Insect Kingdom had only ten large pools; if one were destroyed, the population—and thus the military strength—would decline.
In this critical wartime, a population drop translated to a loss of combat strength!
With such an incident, as the warrior insects responsible for searching the wizard creatures, they were culpable.
"Sigh, enough."
After a moment of silence, the priest insect hissed, sending a mental wave through the black crystal.
Soon, a young priest insect in silk entered the room.
"Allow me to introduce Insect Inhart, the chosen insect ordained by the great Mother Insect God."
The golden-armored warrior insects were taken aback, their antennae perking up.
A chosen insect—such a being hadn't appeared in ages.
The last chosen insect appeared during the war with the Cavern Spider.
Insect Inhart bowed slightly to the warrior insects, displaying none of the arrogance typical of a chosen one.
"During this time, Insect Inhart and some junior priests will assist you in searching for the warrior insects. The Black Mushroom Insect Kingdom cannot afford another attack on a large pool!"
The priest insect's voice was resolute. If another incident occurred, not only would the warrior insects be sent to the frontlines, but the priest itself might be sacrificed to the Mother Insect God.
Though returning to the Mother Insect God's embrace was the ultimate desire for priests, it wasn't eager to go just yet.
The golden-armored insects' antennae perked up: "Understood!"
...
Leaving the priest insect's chamber, the warrior insects exchanged glances before the oldest one spoke first:
"Chosen One, forgive my boldness, but what star level are you now?"
Though a chosen insect was far more powerful than ordinary insects, if its star level was too low, it could still fall to sheer numbers.
While searching for wizard creatures was urgent, the chosen one's death would still result in them being sent to the frontlines.
"No need to worry," Insect Inhart assured, shaking its antennae. "I've recently advanced to two-star and received the Mother Insect God's armament."
"Those wizard creatures might be formidable, but I can ensure my escape."
Hearing this, the golden-armored insects breathed a sigh of relief.
Two-star was sufficient—capable of handling most wizard creatures, especially a chosen priest insect.
"In that case, we won't assign you bodyguards. The hive needs insects everywhere; we ask for your understanding."
Insect Inhart smiled. "That's fine, I don't need bodyguards."
"If you have the time, I'd like to show you the methods employed by the wizard creatures to give you an understanding of these foes," a golden-armored insect offered.
"I'm free," Insect Inhart replied. "I've been in the temple long enough; I'd like to see the wizard creatures' methods."
...
In the settlement, the golden-armored insect led Insect Inhart to a ruined small hatching pool.
Unlike warehouses, which could be rebuilt at any time, each hatching pool was meticulously sited at leyline nodes. Once destroyed, the energy disruption rendered it unusable as a pool for years.
This disruption wasn't permanent but could last over a decade. For the Black Crystal Insects, it was as good as total destruction in the current war.
"This is the work of a wizard creature we've been tracking for years," the golden-armored insect explained. "This creature is elusive, striking four times over the years, always managing to destroy a pool unnoticed.
Luckily, it targets small pools, so our losses are manageable."
Insect Inhart bent low, the black crystal on its brow emitting a soft glow. A gentle breeze swept through the chamber.
"What is this..." The golden-armored insect tensed at the environmental shift but soon relaxed.
The change felt familiar, like the Mother Insect itself.
After a while, Insect Inhart stood up.
"My apologies, I was attempting to commune with the Earth Spirit for information on the wizard creature."
"No need to explain so much to me," the golden-armored insect replied respectfully.
It was knowledgeable enough to have seen the Grand Priest commune with the Earth Spirit. Seeing Insect Inhart use the same technique was astonishing.
Barring any surprises, Insect Inhart was poised to become Black Mushroom Insect Kingdom's next Grand Priest.
"Did you learn anything?" the golden-armored insect asked cautiously.
The black crystal on Insect Inhart's brow flickered as visions flashed through its mind—vast, rapid, fragmented, and disjointed.
This was typical when communing with the Earth Spirit.
The Earth Spirit recorded everything that happened on the land, but the information was overwhelming, filled with chaos. Anyone seeking knowledge from the Earth Spirit had to learn to sift through and forget.
From the visions, Insect Inhart saw a black-robed wizard infiltrate the settlement, plant something, and then the pool was destroyed.
It also saw the wizard creature leave the settlement, enter a secluded chamber, and meet another wizard creature... no, that wasn't a wizard creature; it was a bird disguised as one!
And the chamber was... was...
Insect Inhart's mind reeled, overwhelmed by the massive influx of information. It needed to forget these memories, or its mind would turn to mush.
In the final second before forgetting, Insect Inhart saw something unique in the visions—a rare type of mushroom.
"Chosen One, Chosen One..."
The golden-armored insect's call snapped Insect Inhart back. Without delay, it used starlight to sketch a mushroom.
Eyes closed, its mouth emitted a halting cry:
"Great Blue Insect Mushroom... find the chamber with these mushrooms! The wizard creature is hiding there!"
