Whispers of the Forgotten Pines

Chapter 18: The Doorway to the Forgotten

Ethan's heart pounded as he and Lillian approached the glowing doorway. The structure before them felt ancient, as if it had been standing for thousands of years, forgotten by time itself. The air around it shimmered unnaturally, bending like heat waves, though the cavern was as cold as a grave.

As they neared the base of the structure, the whispers grew louder. Not words—not yet—just a chorus of voices, rising and falling like a distant chant. The closer they got, the more Ethan felt like something was waiting inside.

Something that already knew they were coming.

Lillian hesitated. "This place… it feels like it's alive."

Ethan nodded. He could feel it, too. The stone beneath his feet seemed to pulse—a slow, rhythmic beat, like the heartbeat of a slumbering beast.

He swallowed hard and looked up. The staircase wrapped tightly around the tower, spiraling toward the doorway, which pulsed with a sickly blue glow. No other way in. No other way out.

Only forward.

Without another word, he started climbing.

The stairs were narrow, carved from the same obsidian-black stone as the rest of the structure. The surface was smooth, worn down by time—or by something else.

As they ascended, Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.

Not by the mist.

Not by the shadows.

By something inside the walls.

The whispers grew clearer. Words began to form, but they weren't in any language Ethan had ever heard. A guttural, ancient sound—like voices speaking from beyond the grave.

Then—

A thud.

A deep, resonant sound, coming from somewhere below them.

Lillian stiffened. "Did you hear that?"

Ethan nodded, glancing over the edge. The cavern below was as dark as before, but something was moving down there.

A shape, shifting in the shadows. Not quite seen, but felt.

They hurried up the steps.

As they neared the top, the temperature dropped sharply. Frost formed on the edges of the stone, and Ethan's breath turned visible in the air.

Then, they reached it.

The doorway.

Up close, it was more than just an opening. It was a threshold. A veil between worlds.

Ethan could see nothing beyond it—just an endless void of swirling blue mist, shimmering and shifting like water. The same symbol from the book and the Chamber of Echoes was etched into the stone above the doorway.

Lillian's fingers trembled as she ran her hand along the carvings. "This is it."

Ethan exhaled. He had no idea what was waiting for them on the other side.

But he knew one thing for certain—

Turning back was no longer an option.

Without a word, he stepped forward—

And the moment his foot crossed the threshold—

The world shattered.

Ethan didn't fall.

He didn't step.

He was simply somewhere else.

The air was thick, almost like liquid, pressing against his skin. The sky above was black, but streaked with veins of glowing blue, pulsing like the inside of a living thing. The ground beneath his feet was smooth, glass-like, reflecting distorted images of himself and Lillian.

Ethan turned to her. "Are you okay?"

She nodded, but her eyes were locked onto something ahead. "Look."

Ethan followed her gaze—and his breath caught.

In the distance stood a city.

Or at least, what was left of one.

Towering ruins stretched endlessly, their spires broken and crumbling. The architecture was unlike anything Ethan had ever seen—twisting, spiraling structures that defied gravity, covered in glowing symbols that flickered weakly, as if gasping for breath.

But what sent a chill down his spine was the silence.

No wind. No whispers.

Just stillness.

As if the entire place was holding its breath.

Lillian clutched his arm. "Ethan… This isn't just another place."

He swallowed hard. "I know."

"This is another world."

They stood there, staring at the ruins, as realization settled over them.

This wasn't a cave.

This wasn't the Whispering Pines they knew.

They had crossed a threshold into something far older.

And something was waiting for them in that dead city.

Something that had been waiting for a very long time.

What ancient secrets lie within the ruins? What force watches Ethan and Lillian from the shadows? And… was something else waiting for them before they even arrived?
