Chapter 49: Chapter 49 Hydra Hides & Wanda Seeks
The dim glow of the communicator faded as Wanda ended her conversation with Eska. Wanda stood silently for a moment, her crimson magic flickering faintly around her fingers as she considered the path ahead. Sokovia's future was clear in her mind, but the challenges she would face loomed large.
Far from Afghanistan, in a secret Hydra bunker buried beneath the Pyrenees mountains, Alexander Pierce sat at the head of a dimly lit conference room. Around him, holographic projections of Hydra's most influential leaders flickered, their faces cold and calculating.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Pierce began, his voice smooth and commanding. "Hydra has faced setbacks before. But the losses we've incurred in Sokovia are unparalleled."
The room was silent, the weight of his words sinking in.
Pierce gestured toward a holographic map of Sokovia, the image showing areas where Hydra operations had once thrived. Each point of interest was now marked with a red 'X.' "The Citadel is gone. Baron Zemo is dead. Strucker's legacy has been obliterated, along with Dimitri and his entire command. And now, the Ten Rings base where the Unified Ascendance Project was being developed has been reduced to rubble."
One of the European leaders, a gray-haired man with a sharp, angular face, spoke up, his tone bitter. "Wanda Maximoff. This… Scarlet Witch. She's dismantled decades of Hydra's work in a matter of months."
"And she hasn't done it alone," added a leader from Hydra's Asian division, her tone sharp. "She has allies. That spy, Natasha Romanoff, and her Sokovian ally—Eska. Together, they've turned Sokovia into a fortress."
Pierce leaned forward, his expression dark. "It's not just a fortress. It's becoming a sanctuary. Maximoff's vision is dangerous. Sokovia is no longer a fractured nation. It's united under her leadership, and she's inviting mutants, magic users, and other empowered individuals to join her."
Another leader, a Russian operative, sneered. "Let her invite them. It will only make her more vulnerable. The world fears these people."
Pierce's cold smile was devoid of humor. "The world may fear them, but Sokovia's people do not. They see themselves in these outsiders. Hydra turned Sokovia into a laboratory, using its citizens as test subjects and soldiers. That shared trauma has forged them into something stronger than we anticipated."
A hologram shifted, displaying recent attempts to infiltrate Sokovia. The images flickered: Hydra agents entering Sokovian cities, only to disappear without a trace.
"All attempts to infiltrate Sokovia have failed," Pierce said, his tone edged with frustration. "Every operative we've sent has vanished. No intelligence, no communication, no survivors. Something—or someone—is hunting them down."
The Asian leader frowned. "Do we know what's responsible?"
"No," Pierce replied, his voice clipped. "And that's precisely the problem. Whatever is protecting Sokovia is operating outside our intelligence. We don't even know if Maximoff is aware of it."
The room fell silent for a moment before another leader spoke, his voice low. "What about Eska? Have the assassination attempts been successful?"
Pierce's gaze darkened. "No. Every team we've sent to eliminate her has lost contact before completing their mission. Eska remains untouchable, and Sokovia's government continues to consolidate power under her leadership."
Pierce straightened, his voice cold and authoritative. "Sokovia is a lost cause. We've poured enough resources into that country, and we've gained nothing but failure. It's time to shift our focus."
One of the younger leaders leaned forward, his expression tense. "What do you propose?"
Pierce tapped a button on his console, and the holographic map shifted to reveal Spain. "Hydra has a well-established branch here. With Sokovia lost, Spain will become our primary operational hub."
"Spain?" a Russian leader asked, his tone skeptical. "What advantage does Spain offer us that Sokovia does not?"
Pierce's cold smile returned. "Spain offers us stability, resources, and most importantly, invisibility. Unlike Sokovia, where Hydra's presence has been thoroughly exposed, Spain is untarnished. Our operations there have been embedded for decades, and no one suspects a thing. It is the perfect location for us to rebuild and recalibrate."
The European leader leaned back, considering Pierce's words. "And what of the Unified Ascendance Project? With the base destroyed, we've lost significant advancements."
Pierce gestured to the hologram, which now displayed scattered remnants of the Unified Ascendance Project's blueprints. "What we've lost in Sokovia can be reconstructed in Spain. We still have key scientists and resources in the region. The project is delayed, not destroyed."
Another hologram appeared, showing Spain's sprawling Hydra network: underground labs, hidden safehouses, and corporate fronts. "Spain will allow us to consolidate our operations, rebuild, and prepare for the next phase of Hydra's evolution."
A leader from the Asian division spoke up, her voice sharp. "And what of Maximoff? She and her allies have already proven to be a significant threat. Are we simply going to allow her to continue building her sanctuary unchecked?"
Pierce's gaze turned icy. "Maximoff's sanctuary is ambitious, but it is also fragile. The more people she brings into Sokovia, the harder it will be for her to protect them all. Her inexperience will be her undoing."
The Russian operative frowned. "And if she succeeds? If Sokovia becomes a beacon for mutants and magic users, we could be facing an unprecedented force."
Pierce's smirk widened. "Then we'll let her enemies handle her for us. The world is full of organizations and governments that fear mutants and magic users. Let them chip away at her sanctuary. Hydra will bide its time, observing and waiting. When the time is right, we will strike."
One of the younger Hydra leaders leaned forward, his expression skeptical. "And what of Natasha Romanoff? She's S.H.I.E.L.D., Pierce. That organization is a thorn in our side."
Pierce's expression darkened. "Romanoff is a complication, yes. But S.H.I.E.L.D. has its own problems. Our agents within their ranks are well-placed, and their focus remains divided. Romanoff's involvement is concerning, but she is not Hydra's primary concern at the moment. Let her continue her games with Maximoff. They're playing into our hands."
The room fell silent as the leaders exchanged glances. Pierce leaned forward, his voice low but commanding. "Hydra is eternal. We have survived worse setbacks than this. Sokovia is a lost battle, but the war is far from over. Spain will be our new base of operations, and from there, we will rebuild. Maximoff and her sanctuary will not last. When the time comes, Hydra will rise stronger than ever."
One of the holograms flickered, revealing the Hydra emblem glowing faintly against a black background. A leader from the European division spoke, her tone resolute. "Spain is a stronghold, but it will take time to reestablish our projects. Are we prepared for the delay?"
Pierce's voice was calm but firm. "Time is our greatest weapon. Hydra does not act rashly. Let Maximoff think she's won. Let Sokovia grow complacent. When we reemerge, we will do so with precision and power."
Another leader nodded. "And in the meantime?"
Pierce's gaze swept across the room. "We fortify. We adapt. And we ensure that Hydra's reach extends deeper into global systems than ever before. Every government, every corporation, every institution—they all belong to us."
The holograms began to flicker out one by one as the leaders disconnected, their faces fading into darkness. Pierce remained seated, his expression unreadable as he stared at the glowing map of Spain.
"Cut off one head," he murmured to himself, "and two shall take its place."
As the room fell silent, Pierce rose, his footsteps echoing softly against the metal floor. Hydra had faced its share of defeats, but this was not the end. Sokovia was a setback, nothing more. Spain would be their rebirth—a new chapter in Hydra's long history.
And when the time came, Wanda Maximoff and her sanctuary would fall just like those before her.
