At this moment, two Cadillacs arrived to support the remaining gang members.
Ten armed thugs stepped out, quickly taking cover behind nearby objects and scanning the darkness for their assailant.
But the night was impenetrably black, and they couldn't spot a thing.
Jason, on the other hand, could see them clearly.
The Cadillacs' LED headlights illuminated the area, granting him a perfect line of sight.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Gunshots echoed, and three more thugs collapsed, blood pooling beneath their bodies.
"Where is he? Kill him!" one of the gangsters screamed, panic creeping into his voice.
The muzzle flashes briefly revealed Jason's position, prompting the remaining seven gangsters to fire wildly in his direction. Bullets whizzed through the air, hitting nothing but the void.
Jason had anticipated this. After his shots, he melted back into the shadows, moving silently to a new vantage point. The gangsters' chaotic gunfire proved useless, their hundred bullets scattering harmlessly into the night.
When they paused to reload, Jason struck again.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Four more men fell, leaving only three standing.
Fear began to grip the survivors. They were being hunted, one by one, and the enemy seemed invisible. Terror distorted their thoughts, magnifying their helplessness.
"He's a devil! I'm out of here!" One thug broke down, throwing his rifle to the ground and sprinting toward the Cadillac.
Jason raised his gun and, with a precise shot through the windshield, ended the man's escape.
The bullet shattered the glass and pierced the man's skull. Blood splattered across the interior as his body slumped over the steering wheel.
The remaining two gangsters stood frozen, their faces pale with dread. One looked to the other, their eyes communicating the same desperate idea.
Run.
Without a word, they sprang into action. One fired aimlessly to provide cover while the other scrambled toward the second car. Their plan dissolved into chaos when they glanced at each other mid-action.
The realization hit them simultaneously:
'You coward, weren't we supposed to fight together?'
'You idiot, weren't we supposed to escape together?'
Jason didn't waste the opportunity. He swiftly shot the thug firing recklessly, leaving only the runner. The man sprinted toward the car, but Jason hesitated.
"Maybe I should keep him alive. He might know something useful about the gang."
Lowering his aim, Jason fired a shot into the runner's calf.
Bang!
The bullet shattered his leg, sending him crashing face-first into the car door. His momentum snapped his neck on impact with a sickening.
Jason sighed.
"Well, so much for questioning him."

Gun at the ready, Jason vaulted over a guardrail and cautiously approached the truck. He checked his surroundings, wary of any lurking enemies. Reaching the container, he slapped a C4 charge onto its side and stepped back to a safe distance.
The truck's windshield was shattered, the cab painted in crimson gore. Driving it out of here would be impossible—too conspicuous. Any passing motorist would call 911 at the sight of it.
Jason's plan was simple: blow open the container, take the most valuable goods, and transfer them to his Ford truck. The rest would burn, leaving nothing behind for Kingpin.
The timer on the C4 ticked down. Jason sprinted away, covering his ears.
Boom!
The explosion ripped through the night, sending a shockwave of dust and debris into the air.
When the dust settled, Jason approached the container. Through the gaping hole, he saw it was packed with thick cardboard boxes. His eyes lit up with greed.
"I'm rich!" He muttered, rubbing his hands together.
"Whatever Kingpin's smuggling must be worth a fortune."
He climbed into the container, tearing open the nearest box. Inside, he found... six barrels of cooking oil.
Jason froze, disbelief plastered on his face.
"What the hell is this?"
Convinced it was a trick, he opened another box—only to find two-liter bottles of milk. Panic set in as he ripped open more boxes, revealing eggs, vegetables, bread, and even turkeys.
Jason stood amidst the cargo, his mind reeling.
"This has to be a joke. Kingpin's smuggling... groceries?"
Doubt gnawed at him.
'Could Kingpin have gone straight, ditching crime to start a food business like some reformed philanthropist?'
'No way. The odds of that are zero.'
Maybe Stan, his informant, had bungled the intel. Or worse, maybe Stan had betrayed him, feeding him false information.
Jason rubbed his temples in frustration.
"Damn it! I should've known better. Kingpin wouldn't make such a rookie mistake."
Kingpin was a brute, but his intelligence rivaled that of any Ivy League graduate. Jason once saw him reading an original Chinese version of The Thirty-Six Stratagems. And one particular strategy seemed eerily relevant: Repair the plank road openly, while marching through Chencang in secret.
Jason realized this entire operation had been bait. The real shipment had likely left the city hours ago along a different route.
Just as he was piecing it all together, his phone buzzed.
"Boss, we've got incoming!" His lookout warned.
"What kind of vehicle?"
"Cadillac. Looks like the ones from earlier."
Jason gritted his teeth.
"Damn it. It's a trap!"
He turned to flee but stopped in his tracks.
"Wait... just one car?"
"Yes, only one."
Confused, Jason moved to the middle of the road, weapon drawn.
"Only five people could fit in that car. Easy."
The Cadillac approached cautiously, stopping a few yards away. Jason aimed his gun, ready to fire. Yet no one exited with weapons blazing.
Instead, the rear door opened, and a single man stepped out.
Tall, broad-shouldered, and bald, he exuded an air of authority.
Jason's grip tightened on his gun as the man walked closer. Recognition dawned.
"Kingpin!"
The two men stared at each other, ten meters apart. Jason's mind raced.
'Why would Kingpin show up for a decoy? Was this all just to lure me out?'
Kingpin's expression shifted from surprise to calm as he finally spoke, his deep voice resonating:
"Jason... I wasn't expecting to see you here."
Jason sneered, keeping his gun trained on him.
"What a clever trap. You've outdone yourself this time. But if you wanted to catch me, you should've brought more men."
Kingpin smirked.
"Catch you? No, Jason... you're not worth the effort."
Jason's confusion deepened.
"If you're not here for me, then what's with the truck full of food? Don't tell me you've gone legit."
Kingpin's silence sent a chill down Jason's spine.
