Chapter 183: Chapter 21: The Past of the Human Race
The Demon and Devil Uprising?
Cao Jiu Feng was puzzled and asked, "Are the demons and devils the ones from the dimension battlefield?"
The Painted Skin Scholar shook his head, saying, "No, the demons and devils in the dimension battlefield don't have the kind of power that could cause such a large-scale uprising, forcing the human race to exert its full strength."
"Then what is it?" Cao Jiu Feng asked, his curiosity piqued.
"It was a group of demons and devils from the hellish abyss!" The Painted Skin Scholar said in a deep voice.
"Demons and devils from hell?" Cao Jiu Feng stared at the Painted Skin Scholar in shock.
"Yes," the Painted Skin Scholar confirmed again.
"Does the dimension battlefield have a connection to hell?" Cao Jiu Feng asked in disbelief.
"It does," the Painted Skin Scholar said, surprised by the question. He chuckled and said, "What do you think hell is?"
"Isn't hell beneath the human world?" Cao Jiu Feng replied. "The dimension battlefield is above the human realm, so logically, they should have no connection."
The Painted Skin Scholar shook his head and replied, "Your statement shows that you don't understand hell at all."
"I'd like to learn more," Cao Jiu Feng said humbly.
"The human world, the immortal realm, and hell are the three major worlds of the source universe. These three worlds are not separated by a simple up-down relationship. They intertwine with each other—'you within me, I within you.' Even the weakest human world has its own concepts of death and hell. But that doesn't mean hell is necessarily below; it's a real world. So, the connection between the dimension battlefield and hell isn't that strange," the Painted Skin Scholar explained.
"The three major worlds of the source universe..." Cao Jiu Feng muttered.
"Yes, the source universe has these three vast worlds, each with complete natural laws, including birth, aging, illness, and death, as well as the cycles of the sun and moon. But the mystic realm we opened doesn't have these attributes. That's why it's called the mystic realm, not a world," the Painted Skin Scholar elaborated.
"Forget about these worlds for now. Why did the demons and devils from hell invade the dimension battlefield?" Cao Jiu Feng pressed.
"That's something I don't know. Even the ancestors of the human race who died during the battle left no words behind. I only know it was a bloody and brutal war that spread across the entire dimension battlefield. The human race was at the forefront, and we had no choice but to fight," the Painted Skin Scholar said.
"Actually, according to some historical records, the human race at the time could have preserved more of their strength and avoided such heavy losses," Sword Emperor Liu suddenly said.
"How could they have preserved it?" Cao Jiu Feng asked.
"By entering the immortal realm through the immortal gate," the Painted Skin Scholar replied.
"The human race ancestors found the immortal gate?" Cao Jiu Feng suddenly recalled that the Painted Skin Scholar had earlier mentioned that the human ancestors planned to open the immortal gate for everyone in the dimension battlefield, so that top experts could reach the immortal realm.
The Painted Skin Scholar nodded and quietly said, "The ancestors of the human race found the immortal gate. When the demons and devils from hell launched their full-scale invasion, if the human race's ancestors had entered the immortal gate, they could have preserved a portion of their strength. But they gave it up..."
"Why did they give it up?" Cao Jiu Feng asked in confusion.
"If the human race's ancestors had entered the immortal gate to save some strength, leaving the dimension battlefield behind, the entire dimension battlefield would have fallen to hell. All the tribes inside, including us ascended from the human realm, would have become food for the demons and devils of hell. No one could resist," the Painted Skin Scholar said.
Cao Jiu Feng was stunned, then said after a long pause, "The human race's ancestors stayed behind and fought the demons and devils because of this?"
The Painted Skin Scholar and Sword Emperor Liu nodded silently.
"Since ancient times, our human ancestors sacrificed their lives to ensure the later generations would have a good cultivation environment. They spilled blood, burning their last ounce of strength. Those bloody fourteen years drained the top experts of the human race, and ninety-nine great cities were destroyed, leaving only ten. Ordinary cultivators and people suffered massive casualties, and the entire dimension battlefield was shattered. After that battle, the human race was severely wounded," the Painted Skin Scholar said with sorrow.
"After the battle, with the human race heavily weakened, we still had to host the first Hundred Races Battle. In this situation, the human race's remaining strength was scattered, and other races, seeing that the demons and devils had been defeated and the human race was weakened, immediately stabbed the human race in the back, slaughtering its remaining forces. That Hundred Races Battle was incredibly brutal. For the human race, it was a dark and bloody period in history," Sword Emperor Liu said angrily.
Cao Jiu Feng furrowed his brow deeply, feeling anger and regret for the sacrifices of the human race's ancestors. "They really saved a bunch of ungrateful wolves. Without the sacrifice of the human race's experts, the so-called Hundred Races would have been long gone."
The Painted Skin Scholar sighed. "The Hundred Races were ungrateful, and I had prepared myself for that. What's worse is that there was a traitor from within the human race. At the most critical moment during the war with the demons and devils, he secretly polluted the Nine Continents' Flames, reducing the power of the nine flames and causing the human race to pay a heavy price."
"Who was this traitor?" Cao Jiu Feng asked, his face cold with murderous intent.
"His name was Wu Tongtian, a figure from several hundred thousand years ago," Sword Emperor Liu said.
"Is he still alive?" Cao Jiu Feng asked, his killing intent rising.
"He died a long time ago. After he sabotaged the Nine Continents' Flames, he was killed by the human ancestors," the Painted Skin Scholar said, shaking his head.
"He died too easily," Cao Jiu Feng muttered angrily. "He should have had his soul extracted and burned in the hell flames for tens of thousands of years. Living would be painful, and death wouldn't be any better."
Sword Emperor Liu gave him a thumbs-up. "I agree!"
The Painted Skin Scholar chuckled and shook his head. "The human ancestors didn't have the time for that. There were so many demons and devils to slay, they couldn't afford to waste time on him."
"Then what about the immortal gate the human race discovered?" Cao Jiu Feng asked, curiosity piqued once more.
"The immortal gate wasn't exclusive to the human race. The human ancestors discovered it and tried to open it. But after the bloodbath with the demons and devils, the immortal gate naturally concealed itself. Since then, very few people have been able to open the immortal gate," the Painted Skin Scholar explained.
"Why is it so rare for people to open the immortal gate?" Cao Jiu Feng asked in confusion. "With so many races in the dimension battlefield, so much spiritual energy, shouldn't it be relatively easy to reach the immortal realm and open the gate?"
The Painted Skin Scholar shook his head. "I don't know. My own strength isn't enough to open the immortal gate, so I can't say for certain."
Just as Cao Jiu Feng and the Painted Skin Scholar were engrossed in their conversation, many races began to arrive in the area, filling up all the hundred positions. Those not in the Hundred Races stood at the edges, looking eagerly at the seats, vowing to claim one for themselves.
Among these races, the human race was the most coveted. Here, they were the fewest in number, the weakest, and lacked the necessary aura to deter others.
