Chapter 2: chapter 2
5:30 AM
Ara Jeon is jogging under the open sky with the idea of forgetting all the past in her mind and moving forward. Every morning, she sees the sun rising. The cool morning air kissed her cheeks as the sun's early rays began to warm the street beneath her feet, offering a temporary sense of peace. Birds also wake up one by one and start their journey towards a new day and roam the open sky. Birds can also travel to different countries to fulfill their regrets and dreams. But before the dream of the girl running down in the open sky could be fulfilled, the sapling of her dream tree was uprooted.
The sound of running feet. She is panting while jogging. The sun is rising in the sky.
"Who would have thought that the streets of this same busy city would be so quiet in the morning?....."Ara Jeon said with a light breath.
Ara Jeon ran a little further.
Ara Jeon stopped for a moment and took a deep breath and said, "It's been a few years since that incident, but now that incident has become my nightmare and is not leaving me....Will this past still leave me?"
Ara Jeon started jogging again and while remembering the old days she spent, she started talking to herself,.....
"I'm Ara Jeon. An ordinary girl. An ordinary employee who works at a cafe store. Very ordinary..." She took a deep breath.
As her feet hit the pavement with rhythmic steps, Ara's mind drifted back to her past.....
[Scene change]
[Hospital, June 23, 2014] (It's raining outside)
The harsh fluorescent lights above flickered, casting a cold, sterile glow over the hospital room. Ara Jeon lay motionless in the bed, her body covered in bandages and bruises that told a silent story of the horrors she had endured. Her breaths were shallow, her chest rising and falling in a rhythm that didn't quite match the frantic pounding of her heart. The soft beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound accompanying the deafening silence that had settled around her.
Her mother sat beside her bed, her face buried in her hands, crying uncontrollably. Her shoulders shook violently with each sob. The sound of her distress was gut-wrenching, but it barely registered to Ara, who was lost in a haze of pain and confusion. Every part of her felt numb, like a fading echo from a life she once knew.
"You have to save her!" her mother screamed at the doctor, her voice hoarse from the tears. "Please! Save my daughter! Do whatever it takes!"
The doctor stood at the foot of the bed, his expression solemn, hands folded in front of him. "We're doing everything we can, Mrs. Jeon. But her condition is—"
"I don't care about her condition!" her mother cried out, her eyes wide with fear and disbelief. "I care about her life! You have to save her!" Her voice cracked, and for a moment, she collapsed into the doctor's arms, shaking with helplessness.
Ara's eyes drifted toward her mother, but she couldn't bring herself to speak. She could only watch as the tears continued to flow down her own cheeks. They seemed endless, as if the floodgates to her soul had been opened, and all the sorrow, fear, and rage that had been pent up inside her had finally found its way out.
But no words came from her lips. No cries. No pleas for help. She could barely hold onto the fragments of herself that hadn't been shattered by what had happened.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, and a uniformed police officer stepped inside, followed by another officer with a notepad. The air seemed to grow colder with their presence, as if the truth that had yet to be spoken was hanging just out of reach.
"Mrs. Jeon, we've been informed of the incident. We need to take Ara's statement," the officer said, but his tone was strangely distant, as though he wasn't fully invested in his own words.
Ara's mother wiped her eyes and stood up, trying to keep her voice steady. "Yes… yes, please," she begged, her voice faltering. "The men who did this, they're dangerous! They must be stopped!"
The officers exchanged glances, their expressions unreadable. One of them spoke again, his voice lower this time. "Mrs. Jeon, we understand how difficult this is. But… the individuals involved in this… they hold powerful positions. We can't guarantee that they will be held accountable."
A heavy silence fell over the room.
Ara's heart sank into her stomach, and the world seemed to close in on her. Her mind raced, but everything felt like a blur. The truth of the situation hit her like a tidal wave—those men would walk free. No matter how hard her mother screamed, no matter how much she pleaded for justice, there was nothing anyone could do.
Her life, her dignity, and her dreams—all of them had been ripped away by the same people who could never be touched. Ara couldn't help but think, This is it. This is the end of everything I've ever known.
Her mother's cries became muffled in the background as Ara closed her eyes, feeling an overwhelming sense of defeat. Every dream she had ever had, every hope she had nurtured in the silence of her heart, seemed so distant now. She had been nothing more than a pawn, a helpless victim, caught in the web of power and corruption.
This is my fate now...
Her tears, once again, flowed freely as she thought of all the things she would never be able to do—things like becoming the woman she had always wanted to be, living her dreams, falling in love, finding peace. Those things seemed so far beyond her reach now.
Outside the hospital window, the rain continued to pour relentlessly, as if the sky itself was mourning the brokenness of the world Ara now found herself in.
