Chapter 199: The Pigeon Egg Worth Five Hundred Million
"That... Chu Senior is in the kitchen, Mr. Lu, please come in!"
Tang Tang's face flushed slightly as she stepped aside, her starry eyes filled with excitement and barely concealed thrill.
In the Magic City, the younger generation might not be familiar with the nickname Mr. Lu, but for the local elderly, this name resounds like thunder.
As it happened, Tang Tang was a local from the Magic City. From a young age, she grew up listening to her grandmother's stories about Mr. Lu. To her grandmother, this widely respected figure in the entire Magic City was deeply admired, and consequently, Mr. Lu became akin to a hero in Tang Tang's eyes.
Previously, at the gate of Normal University, when Chu Mo asked her if she knew Mr. Lu, Tang Tang nodded subconsciously. It would be hard not to know such a well-known figure, but the reality was, Mr. Lu couldn't possibly know such an insignificant person like her.
In the car, Tang Tang had several times wanted to address this but stopped short, simply because Chu Mo never gave her an opportunity to explain.
The old man, exuding an aura of prosperity, nodded with a smile as he leisurely walked toward the kitchen door. Seeing the young figure busily cooking inside, he nodded slightly without interrupting and turned to head to the living room.
"Mr. Lu, may I take a photo with you later? My grandmother really admires you. She used to tell me stories about you from when I was little, about how you personally went to the battlefield and performed great deeds when you aided Pole Country, about how you sacrificed so much for the development of the Magic City.
My grandmother, she once got up in the middle of the night to wash her hair and put on makeup just to see you... Unfortunately, she still didn't get to meet you in the end!"
The head of the Lu family in the Magic City settled comfortably on the living room sofa. He looked around at the small but exceptionally cozy room, nodded slightly, and then, when his gaze rested on the delicate-looking girl, the kindly old man said affectionately,
"Haha, did your grandmother ever tell you about how I eradicated traitors?"
Upon hearing this, Tang Tang immediately widened her dazzling starry eyes and nodded vigorously, her expression one of excitement,
"Yes, she talked about it. My grandmother admires you so much that even my grandfather gets jealous!"
"Haha...!"
The old man was in high spirits. He found himself increasingly fond of the young woman in front of him and nodded,
"It seems your grandmother is truly passionate. Those events from the past are now hardly remembered by anyone other than us locals from the Magic City."
While they were talking, Chu Mo came out of the kitchen with a large pot of beef stewed with potatoes. Seeing the old and the young engrossed in their conversation and Mr. Lu's face showing a gratified smile, he couldn't help but take a second look at the girl with the dazzling eyes before saying with a chuckle,
"Mr. Lu, I hope you won't mind the simple hospitality. Would you like to join us for a bite?"
The old man had already eaten dinner but in Hua Country, there's a rich dining table culture where many subjects are more easily broached over a meal. Given he had come to discuss matters with Chu Mo, he didn't decline. The vigorous old man rose from his seat with a beaming expression,
"Alright, today I'll have a taste of your cooking, Chu Mo!"
"Tang Tang, there are bowls and chopsticks in the kitchen cabinet, wash them and bring them here!"
After Chu Mo served the cooked rice, the girl with sparkling eyes entered the kitchen. After a while, seeing that she hadn't come out, Chu Mo went back into the kitchen just to find her bending over, searching through the cabinets, unable to find the bowls and chopsticks. He shook his head and with a light smack on her shapely behind, he laughed,
"Silly, let me do it."
Chu Mo opened the cabinet effortlessly, took out the bowls and chopsticks, washed them, and then returned from the kitchen. Meanwhile, the stunning girl's face turned crimson. She bit her lip, touched the spot where she had been smacked, and her brilliant eyes seemed on the verge of watering.
After Chu Mo had served the rice, Tang Tang finally raised her head, her face still flushed, and came out of the kitchen.
The three of them each had a bowl of rice. On the dining table, there was only a large pot of fragrant beef stewed with potatoes. The dinner was really rather modest, both for Mr. Lu and for Chu Mo, who was accustomed to no fewer than sixteen dishes at each meal.
However, considering who had cooked the meal, this beef stew could be considered an incredibly lavish feast.
It wasn't easy to have a meal cooked by Chu Mo himself in the Magic City.
"Mr. Lu, I don't know if you can eat spicy food. I put in less chili. Please try it and see if it suits your taste."
Chu Mo picked up his bowl and chopsticks, truly feeling famished. After signaling the start of the meal, he didn't wait for anyone else and directly helped himself to a large slice of beef. After it entered his mouth, the taste was rich and fragrant.
Grandpa Lu was advanced in years and usually ate very little at night. Plus, he had already had dinner, so he merely went through the motions with his chopsticks. On the other hand, Chu Mo wolfed down his food. Meanwhile, Tang Tang beside him acted far more ladylike, nibbling on her rice and only occasionally picking up a juicy piece of potato for herself.
"What were you all chatting about just now? I could hear Grandpa Lu laughing so happily all the way from the kitchen."
Chu Mo had devoured more than half of his bowl of rice, and his hunger had subsided somewhat; only then did he initiate the conversation.
Grandpa Lu across from him put down his bowl and chopsticks, nearly untouched, but the elderly man's complexion was good, and he said with a smile:
"I was whispering with this young lady here. It's been a long time since I felt so lighthearted, truly as if I've found a kindred spirit too late in life. Here's the thing, your grandmother wanted to meet me but never had the chance, which is a moderate regret in my life. Today, I'll rectify that regret. I have a small item here that I wish to give to you as a gesture of our meeting."
As the old man finished speaking, he pulled out a blood-red jade stone the size of a pigeon's egg from his bosom. He handed it to Tang Tang beside him with the air of an elder bestowing a meeting gift upon a junior.
Tang Tang blushed and immediately set down her bowl and chopsticks, but she dared not accept the jade stone the size of a pigeon's egg.
Although she wasn't familiar with things like jade, she knew that anything carried by Grandpa Lu of the capital and given as a gift couldn't be worth less than several million—Tang Tang was the first one who wouldn't believe that. She naturally didn't dare to accept such an unearned and precious gift.
Tang Tang turned her gaze towards Chu Mo, her eyes sparkling like gemstones and filled with a plea for help.
Seeing Grandpa Lu still holding out his hand and the old man's face full of springtime cheer and a kind smile in his eyes, Chu Mo said with a laugh:
"A gift from Grandpa Lu can't possibly be taken back. Tang Tang, just accept it!"
As he spoke, Tang Tang, who was swallowing hard, finally took the pigeon's egg-sized jade stone with both hands, then bowed her head slightly and said:
"Thank you, Grandpa Lu!"
The old man nodded gently, got up himself, and helped Tang Tang wear the jade stone around her neck. Afterward, he smiled and nodded, saying:
"I've carried this thing for decades. Originally, it was intended for Siyue, that mischievous girl, but I feared she might break it while wearing it, ruining such a fine object. This young lady looks quiet and gentle; wearing this suits her perfectly."
Upon hearing this, Chu Mo's expression brightened. Everyone in Hua Country knew that Grandpa Lu from the capital was fond of antiques and calligraphy; any collection item in his home was worth hundreds of millions. Last time Chu Mo bought a piece of calligraphy from him for four to five billion, and the item destined for Grandpa Lu's granddaughter, Siyue, surely was not something simple.
Driven by curiosity, Chu Mo casually inquired:
"Grandpa Lu, how does this item, which you've carried for decades, compare to that piece of calligraphy by Huang Tingjian?"
The elderly man across smiled and nodded, his voice carrying a hint of amusement as he said:
"Some years ago, an old friend offered this price to exchange for this jade stone, but I did not agree."
Upon hearing this, Chu Mo's eyes brightened again.
It cost Chu Mo five billion to acquire Huang Tingjian's calligraphy, and someone offered five billion for a piece of jade which Grandpa Lu was unwilling to sell...
That pigeon's egg-sized jade stone must be worth at least five billion.
Chu Mo turned his gaze to Tang Tang beside him, and in a gentle tone, he said:
"Tang Tang, you must take good care of this jade stone. It's a heritage piece; don't let down Grandpa Lu's kindness."
The girl beside him nodded slightly, but clearly, she still had no idea what kind of treasure she had stumbled upon by mistake.
