Chapter 139 - Circumstances Stronger Than People
Tian Feirong and the little fatty were much luckier than Gu Yao and the others. As soon as they entered, they found that the others were within the range of their communicator’s sensor, so it didn’t take long for them to meet. Neither of them had reached the Foundation Establishment stage yet, so they were considered low-level cultivators in the secret realm. Since they weren’t particularly combative, they managed to avoid dangers by staying cautious and careful, and even exchanged some information with other Tianlin Continent cultivators who had entered the secret realm.
“Little fatty, this is big news, I just heard a rumor,” Tian Feirong said as he returned from outside to their temporary cave, where they’d been staying for the past two days. “Guess what it is?”
The little fatty rolled his eyes. “Just spit it out already.”
“Alright, alright, so it’s news spread by the people from Changxian Sect,” Tian Feirong said, his voice full of excitement. “They said there’s a sword cultivator who stole a treasure belonging to their sect, and they’re making it clear that they won’t let this sword cultivator go. Everyone’s guessing who this sword cultivator could be.”
The little fatty’s eyes lit up. “Well, that’s obvious. It must be Brother Chi! When others see Changxian Sect people, they just want to run, but not Brother Chi. Those people must’ve done something to piss him off, or said something he didn’t like. Would Brother Chi let them off? Hah, they’re just a bunch of sore losers.”
“Yeah, yeah, I think so too,” Tian Feirong said, nodding vigorously like a chick pecking at grains.
In their minds, Chi Changye’s image was larger than life—someone who would never start trouble but would never let anyone mess with him either. So, would Chi Changye take someone’s treasure? Pfft! Don’t smear Brother Chi’s name like that. Both of them vented their frustrations about the sore losers from Changxian Sect and then became worried.
“It seems like Gu Yao didn’t run into Brother Chi. I wonder where Gu Yao ended up. Changxian Sect really has issues. That so-called alchemist Ning Hui is even looking for Gu Yao. Pfft! Let’s wait until we heal up, then we can set off. Hopefully, we’ll meet up with Brother Chi and Gu Yao soon,” the little fatty said, clearly concerned. A few days ago, they had encountered a demon beast and had to use quite a bit of effort to escape. Unfortunately, the little fatty had been injured by the beast’s claws, so they dug a temporary cave to rest and heal, while Tian Feirong went out to gather information.
“Also, we need to change our faces before going out to avoid causing trouble for Brother Chi,” Tian Feirong said.
The little fatty nodded, took a Rejuvenation Pill, closed his eyes, and began focusing on healing his injury.
Five days later, Gu Yao finally saw some familiar faces. It was Du Lingdai and Tao Yue from Miaoyun Sect, along with a dozen or so other cultivators. Their attire indicated that they belonged to different factions, suggesting that they had come together after meeting in the secret realm.
After observing them with his divine sense for a while, Gu Yao decided to approach. He needed to exchange some information as well—strength in numbers was always useful, even here.
“Who’s there?” someone called out cautiously as soon as Gu Yao got close.
Gu Yao stopped just outside their range of alertness and cupped his hands in greeting. “I’m a rogue cultivator from Tianlin Continent, my name is Xu. This is the first time I’ve encountered fellow cultivators since entering the secret realm.”
“Oh, it’s Xu Daoist. Please come over,” Tao Yue said. Although the face was unfamiliar, Tao Yue felt a strange sense of familiarity with the person’s aura and, intuitively, did not believe he had any ill intentions.
Besides, there were over ten cultivators here—surely they weren’t afraid of one person, right?
After expressing his gratitude, Gu Yao walked over to them. Meanwhile, Xu Chen protested in his mind: “Hey, hey, you’re using my surname without my permission? Don’t tell me your name is Xu Chen.”
Gu Yao had just casually given a surname, and as for the first name, he hadn’t thought of one yet, so he ignored Xu Chen’s complaint.
Someone asked, “Xu Daoist, have you encountered any people from Changxian Sect?”
Gu Yao sat down on a cushion not far from them and said, “I have seen them, but I kept my distance. I didn’t dare to approach them.”
Another person spoke up, “It’s a good thing you stayed hidden. Those people are too overbearing. They came to our Tianlin Continent to steal our resources, and when they encountered our cultivators, they either insulted or killed them. They call themselves ‘heaven’s favorites.’ Pfft! They’re more like bandits.”
Gu Yao glanced at the others’ expressions. Several of them looked angry, and he thought to himself, ‘It seems like there are quite a few situations like Su Yang’s. Could it be that the disciples of Changxian Sect all have such a temperament? What kind of righteous sect is Changxian Sect, with such a mindset? Can they really cultivate the Dao with such hearts?’
“At least someone gave them a taste of defeat,” said a female cultivator, her eyes gleaming. “Tao Daoist, is that lightning sword cultivator the one from your academy, Brother Chi?”
Hearing the words “lightning sword cultivator” and “Brother Chi,” Gu Yao’s heart skipped a beat. It had to be Brother Ye! What had Brother Ye done? If he had encountered the disciples of Changxian Sect, Gu Yao was certain that the ones at a disadvantage would not be Brother Ye.
Tao Yue responded modestly, “I haven’t encountered Brother Chi yet, so I can’t be sure.”
Curious, Gu Yao asked, “What did this lightning sword cultivator do?”
As soon as the question was out, several people eagerly began to explain to Gu Yao. He soon learned that Changxian Sect had spread the word that Brother Ye had stolen their treasure. Hah! The treasures in the secret realm are all unowned. Did those people think the secret realm was their private property?
One cultivator angrily said, “Those bandits! How dare they say that the lightning sword cultivator stole their treasure? I think when they discovered the treasure, they couldn’t compete with the sword cultivator, so they framed him. Besides, haven’t they stolen enough of our things? Not only do they steal, but they also kill people.”
Gu Yao agreed, “That’s right. Even if they did steal something, so what? It’s just that they’re not as skilled, and they can’t accept losing.”
Du Lingdai curiously observed Gu Yao. “Xu Daoist is right. After all, entering this secret realm is about competing for treasures. It all depends on who acts fastest.”
“I heard that a pill master from Changxian Sect named Ning Hui is looking for your Gu Yao from Tianfu Academy. What does he want? Does he want to challenge Gu Yao?”
Gu Yao’s eyelids twitched, and he felt like digging his ears. Who is this Ning Hui? What does he want with him?
Before anyone from Tianfu Academy could speak, others began to defend Gu Yao. “Aren’t these people acting like bandits? Wanting to find Gu Yao just to prove he’s not capable. Hmph, Gu Yao isn’t someone who gained his reputation without merit. I heard he has already established his foundation and is an eighth-grade pill master. Is that right?”
A discussion started around Gu Yao and Ning Hui. As one of the topic figures, Gu Yao felt a little embarrassed listening to the talk. Earlier, he had joined in the conversation about Chi Changye, but now it was awkward. Xu Chen in the space laughed heartily and even encouraged Gu Yao to go meet Ning Hui.
Gu Yao rolled his eyes inwardly at Xu Chen. He would be crazy to go meet someone named Ning Hui. And with the mention of Ning Hui, he wondered if it had something to do with the troubles caused by the formula for Qingchen Pill.
After the conversation about Ning Hui passed, Gu Yao took the initiative to ask them about the places they had been. He also shared some valuable locations he had discovered, exchanging useful information. This proved effective, as Gu Yao learned from Tao Yue about several places where spiritual herbs grew. However, these places were either occupied by powerful beasts or surrounded by restrictions, and they hadn’t been able to break through even with their combined strength.
While they were chatting happily, a dozen or so rays of rainbow light streaked toward them from a certain direction. As they got closer, their identities became clear. The cultivators were wearing the distinctive robes of Changxian Sect. Everyone immediately grew tense, standing up and eyeing the newcomers warily.
Although there were a dozen of them, and their group was also about a dozen, Gu Yao quickly realized that several of the new arrivals had already reached the peak of foundation building. Their group would be no match for them. Once he saw the situation, even Du Lingdai and Tao Yue’s expressions turned grim.
Gu Yao even received a transmission. It was Tao Yue’s voice: “Xu Daoist, if a conflict breaks out, you should leave as quickly as possible. The farther, the better.”
Gu Yao pondered whether Tao Yue had recognized him or if there was another reason for the warning. What did these people want?
The group from Changxian Sect did not land but remained hovering in the air, looking down at them from above. One of them spoke: “There are a few newly established foundation cultivators. That should be enough. Listen, if you do something for our Alchemist Ning, we won’t make things difficult for you and will let you leave. Otherwise, hehe…”
“Alchemist Ning?” Gu Yao’s mood darkened. He had just heard this person’s name not long ago, and now he was going to meet him in person?
Du Lingdai furrowed her brow and asked, “What do you want us to do?”
She had no goodwill toward these Changxian Sect cultivators. If it were really as simple as completing a task and then leaving, they wouldn’t need to involve them at all, would they? Du Lingdai suspected that these people intended to use them as cannon fodder, and her heart burned with anger.
“Why all the nonsense?” The speaker sneered. “There are only two choices in front of you. Either do something for our Alchemist Ning, or don’t even think about leaving!”
Du Lingdai was furious. She immediately reached for the whip at her waist, itching to strike them across their faces.
Tao Yue, fully aware of Du Lingdai’s fiery temper, quickly placed her hand on Du Lingdai’s and urged her to calm down. She said, “As long as they keep their word, we’ll go along with this.”
“At least you have some sense. Hurry up and follow us, don’t think about running, and don’t delay our business!” The man impatiently urged.
Gu Yao sighed inwardly. There was no way to escape now. He could only follow them, suppressing his anger, just like everyone else.
Gu Yao also had another thought. From the looks of it, they seemed to need quite a few people. Perhaps he would run into Second Brother Tian and the others. This could give him an opportunity to gather more information about Big Brother Ye’s whereabouts. He didn’t think these people would fare well if they encountered Chi Changye.
Moreover, he was curious to see what kind of person Ning Hui really was.
