Chapter 137 - Stranded
Lu Qiusheng waved forcefully and shouted, “Let’s go!”
The first wave of teleportation had been seized by the Tianfu Academy, leaving the disciples of Qianxue Sect glaring resentfully at the scoundrel Lu Qiusheng. Chi Changye and Gu Yao joined this group heading into the light beam, with Tian Feirong and the chubby disciple following closely behind.
As soon as Gu Yao entered the beam of light, he felt an invisible force pulling and dragging at him. After a brief moment of dizziness, the scenery around him shifted entirely. He looked down at his left hand and found it empty. Just a moment ago, it had been tightly clasped with Chi Changye’s. A sense of loss washed over him.
Behind him, it was equally desolate. Tian Feirong and the chubby disciple, who had each been holding a corner of his robe, were nowhere to be seen.
The only solace was the little cat still inside his spirit beast pouch. Gu Yao quickly released it.
The small creature leapt onto his shoulder, meowing at him before curiously glancing around. Then it suddenly seemed delighted, prancing and pacing back and forth on Gu Yao’s shoulder.
Fortunately, Senior Xu Chen was still present in the spatial artifact, able to see the outside world through Gu Yao’s eyes.
Gu Yao took out the communicator. This device, crafted from a unique sea beast in the oceans, allowed those from the same group to detect one another within a certain range. However, none of the lights on it were glowing, indicating that no one else was within range.
Without hesitation, Gu Yao hung the communicator around his neck. He then retrieved a mask and put it on, transforming his face into an extremely ordinary one. Choosing a random direction, he stepped onto his flying sword and began to move forward slowly.
Since I’m already here, I might as well explore this secret realm thoroughly, he thought. Turning to the still cheerful and frolicking little cat, he instructed, “Conceal yourself. Don’t let anyone discover your presence.”
After all, even with his face disguised, the little cat could easily give away his identity.
Gu Yao didn’t assume that his presence in the secret realm would make him universally liked. Until he reunited with the others, he knew it was safest to keep himself hidden.
The little black cat stomped heavily on Gu Yao’s shoulder a few times before perching there, its figure slowly fading into invisibility. Thanks to their contract, however, Gu Yao could still “see” everything about the cat, including the look of dissatisfaction on its tiny face. The displeasure didn’t last long, as the cat quickly found its amusement—leaping off Gu Yao’s shoulder to bully the surrounding plants and bugs below.
Though it played around, the cat faithfully remembered Chi Changye’s instructions and stayed close to Gu Yao at all times.
The spiritual energy in this place was exceptionally dense. The secret realm would remain open for six months, after which everyone, regardless of their location, would be ejected. Even if one did nothing but meditate and cultivate in such an environment, the gains could rival more than a decade of effort outside.
Using his formidable spiritual power, Gu Yao flew slowly while absorbing the surrounding spiritual energy. It felt like soaking in a warm spring, enveloping his entire body in comfort. This abundance of energy also meant that flying on his sword consumed almost no spiritual power, as he could replenish it effortlessly.
Suddenly, the ground trembled, and a large tiger roared as it emerged from the forest. Its gaze toward Gu Yao was filled with greed. Gu Yao immediately understood—the tiger had mistaken him for prey.
The tiger exhaled a powerful gust of wind. Though Gu Yao wasn’t blown away, the cat, which had been frolicking nearby, tumbled backward several times. Enraged, the little black cat revealed itself.
“Roar!”
Its fur stood on end as it growled back at the massive tiger. Compared to the hulking beast, the cat was nearly insignificant in size. Yet, the aura it emanated was no less imposing. The tiger clawed the ground in panic, leaving deep grooves in the soil as it struggled to stop itself. Its eyes darted downward for a moment before finally noticing the tiny creature.
Feeling insulted, the cat grew even angrier, releasing an overwhelming aura from its small body. The tiger began to tremble uncontrollably before doing something that left Gu Yao utterly dumbfounded—it turned tail and fled. Faster than it had arrived, the tiger disappeared without a trace.
Gu Yao, who had been ready to fight, stared incredulously at the little cat.
The cat, still displeased, let out a few more growls toward the fleeing tiger. These sounded adorably kittenish, but the tiger was already too far away to hear them.
Pleased with itself, the cat strutted back and forth in front of Gu Yao, its tiny head held high as if to say, Look how amazing I am. See? You need me to protect you.
Gu Yao, amused, tossed a premium-grade pill toward it. The cat jumped up, caught the pill in its mouth, and happily wagged its tail.
“Thank goodness its ancestors can’t see how silly it looks,” Xu Chen muttered from the spatial artifact.
Suppressing his laughter, Gu Yao called out, “Let’s go.” He resumed his journey, and the cat quickly concealed itself again. The natural abilities of such a spirit beast were far beyond anything humans could hope to match.
The abundant spiritual energy and the long duration of the realm’s opening meant that rare herbs were scattered everywhere. Gu Yao’s eyes lit up when he spotted the primary ingredient for making Cloud Mist Pills. Carefully, he uprooted the plant and stored it in his spatial artifact. Though it hadn’t matured yet, the artifact’s unique environment ensured this wouldn’t be an issue.
Just as he finished collecting a few herbs, Gu Yao’s expression sharpened. The little black cat also perked up its ears, staring vigilantly at a particular spot ahead.
Gu Yao waved his hand to the little black cat, then quickly took out a concealment talisman and applied it to himself, making sure to hide before encountering anyone. He had detected the smell of blood in the wind and remained cautious, always remembering that this place would not be peaceful.
After a while, he saw an injured cultivator flying toward him on a magic tool, swaying unsteadily, looking very disheveled. Behind him, three cultivators were chasing him like cats playing with a mouse. They casually floated on their magic tools, laughing mockingly: “Run, run faster! To be caught so easily—this is what they call a genius? This wilderness is full of geniuses, but they sure don’t seem very valuable.”
“Exactly, this guy can’t even compare to the outer disciples at our Changxian Sect, and yet they say he’s a genius disciple of the Tianhai Sect? It’s laughable.”
“I’ve heard that Ning Hui is looking for an Alchemist Master with the surname Gu. I heard he’s also some kind of genius.”
The word “genius” sounded full of sarcasm coming from their mouths.
Su Yang’s face turned pale with anger. Under a protective barrier, a junior disciple who had coincidentally fallen in with him was killed by these bastards. He and his junior were no match for them. He had only survived this long because they wanted to humiliate him further before finishing him off. Yet, Su Yang still wanted to live. As he saw the three pursuers leisurely continuing their chase, despair filled him.
Tianhai Sect? Gu Yao suddenly recalled who this person was. He had crossed paths with Su Yang before in the Tian Shui Marketplace, though he hadn’t remembered his name at the time since there were too many people around. Now, he recognized him and recalled that his name was Su Yang.
One of the pursuers casually released a spiritual attack, and Su Yang was knocked off his magic tool with a thud. The three pursuers immediately flew over and surrounded him. Su Yang closed his eyes in despair.
“Senior, please help me!” Gu Yao bared his teeth in anger. He couldn’t stand by and do nothing. The actions of the Changxian Sect were despicable—attacking and killing other cultivators without any reason, simply because they looked down on them. Their arrogant attitude was infuriating.
Also, who was this person they mentioned, Ning Hui? What did he have to do with him?
“Alright, what do you want me to do?” Xu Chen asked eagerly, clearly relishing the chance to cause some trouble.
Fortunately, there were only three of them; otherwise, rescuing the person would have been difficult. Gu Yao quickly formulated a plan: “The cat will handle one of them. I’ll take care of the one in the middle, and I’ll use a formation to trap the third person. Senior, please make sure that the third person doesn’t break free from the formation until the cat and I have dealt with our opponents.”
This meant Xu Chen would help control the formation.
“No problem, that’s easy,” Xu Chen happily agreed. Thanks to the premium-grade pills Gu Yao had crafted, Xu Chen’s soul power had recovered a bit, and controlling a small formation with his soul power was a simple task for him.
“Alright, enough wasting time on this trash. Let’s get this over with,” one of the cultivators from Changxian Sect said impatiently after having had enough of playing around.
“Attack!” Gu Yao’s voice rang out in the little black cat’s ears, and without hesitation, it charged at the nearest cultivator. Gu Yao, on the other hand, flew in the opposite direction.
“Who is hiding sneakily over there?” one cultivator shouted, not thinking much of it. He saw several formation disks surrounding him but dismissed them, thinking they couldn’t possibly trap him. He was eager to find out which reckless person dared to attack their Changxian Sect. Once they caught them, they would make them beg for mercy.
However, he soon realized that he was trapped in a fog and couldn’t find his way out. There were even faint laughter sounds around him, mocking him just like they had mocked that so-called genius earlier.
“Who’s there? Get out here! Don’t try to scare me with your tricks, show yourself!”
Outside, the first person to suffer was the one the little black cat had targeted. Caught off guard, the cat pounced on him with a single swipe. He immediately felt a crushing force entering his body, and his protective magic clothing couldn’t withstand it. Alarmed, he used his magic tool to defend against the shadow. However, the shadow darted around him, moving so quickly that his attacks couldn’t touch it.
At the same time, the shadow continued to strike him, and within a few blows, he collapsed to the ground. His body turned black, emitting thick black smoke. In just a short time, he stopped breathing, and his body rapidly shriveled, losing all its flesh and leaving only a skeletal frame. Su Yang watched in stunned silence.
After disposing of its opponent, the shadow crouched beside him. It remained a mass of black mist but revealed two eerie green eyes. It looked like a terrifying monster, and just looking into those eyes made one’s hairs stand on end.
The green eyes briefly glanced at Su Yang before locking onto the figure fighting another cultivator nearby—Gu Yao.
Gu Yao was skillfully controlling his sword while engaging in a battle with another cultivator. The green sword was well hidden, and no one could connect it to Gu Yao. The fight appeared chaotic, but soon, his opponent began to notice that their spiritual power was draining too quickly.
“You… you dare use poison!” the cultivator shouted in fury. “You bastard! Who are you? Do you dare to reveal your identity?!”
