This Danzo Is Weird!

Chapter 116: 116. Welcome to the Root

Lord Danzo's actions were truly devious—so devious that if "devious" had a home, he had just walked through its front door!

But… Aburame Ryouma loved it!

He enjoyed following such a cunning leader to carry out their dark deeds!

Feeling the fiery admiration in Ryouma's eyes, Danzo was momentarily taken aback.

Fortunately, another Root ninja arrived, breaking the tension.

"Lord Danzo, the new recruits approved by the Hokage have arrived at the entrance. Should we let them in?"

"Hmm?"

Danzo slowly rose, leaning on his cane.

"In that case, let's go and inspect these new seedlings."

His raspy voice was swallowed by the darkness as he made his way to the Root's private training grounds.

Truthfully, Danzo had high expectations for this batch of recruits.

After all, he had specifically selected them based on their potential, as seen in the original storyline.

There were six recruits in total:

Kakashi Hatake

Fū Yamanaka

Ebisu Morino

Aoba Yamashiro

Raidō Namiashi

Genma Shiranui

Aside from Kakashi, each of them possessed the potential to become Tokubetsu Jōnin.

The youngest among them was Fū Yamanaka from the Yamanaka Clan.

He was notably tall, with bright orange hair parted in the middle, tied into a high ponytail. He wore a sleeveless, collared outfit and a pair of black gloves that extended over his forearms.

His eyes burned with excitement as he eagerly observed his surroundings.

That wasn't surprising—after all, in the original story, Fū was a loyal member of Root and later served as Danzo's personal guard when he became the Fifth-and-a-Half Hokage.

Compared to him, Ebisu looked much more rugged.

Already in his twenties, he wore a black headscarf, a long black coat, and bore two large scars running across his entire face, giving him a stern and righteous appearance.

Aoba Yamashiro had long black hair and wore sunglasses along with the standard Konoha flak jacket.

At this younger age, he looked sharp and efficient.

He excelled in controlling crows, memory extraction, sensory techniques, and had a solid grasp of Fire Release and Taijutsu—an exceptionally well-rounded talent.

With just a bit more refinement, he was destined for Jōnin rank.

His partner, Raidō Namiashi, had a hairstyle reminiscent of a noble's son but bore a centipede-like scar across his face, making him look rather menacing.

A black katana was strapped to his back, coated with lethal poison—he specialized in assassination.

Lastly, Genma Shiranui stood casually with a senbon in his mouth, hands tucked into his pockets, his gaze sharp and wary.

The group stood in silence, awaiting Danzo's arrival.

"You joining Root, Kakashi? Didn't expect that," Genma commented, his voice carrying a hint of amusement.

Like Kakashi, he wore a black headscarf and had a laid-back demeanor with the ever-present senbon between his lips.

He was about the same age as Kakashi, both not yet twenty, currently in their prime growth phase.

However, his talent was nowhere near Kakashi's.

Kakashi had become a Chūnin at six years old.

Genma, on the other hand, hadn't reached that rank until he was fourteen.

Hearing Genma's greeting, Kakashi shot him a half-lidded glance and replied indifferently:

"As a ninja, I simply follow orders."

Genma sighed.

"Yep… still as boring as ever."

He then shifted his gaze toward Fū and Ebisu, muttering under his breath:

"One's a fanboy kid, the other's a stiff old man…"

"Looks like only Aoba and Raidō are worth talking to."

Before he could say anything else, a loud and energetic voice suddenly rang out in the dim underground space.

Everyone frowned.

This was Root.

The deepest, darkest part of Konoha.

Such an enthusiastic voice felt completely out of place.

Only Kakashi was momentarily stunned, his usually calm face showing a slight ripple of emotion.

That voice… it sounded familiar.

Sure enough, with a loud yell, Might Guy made a dramatic entrance!

"Even in Root, I must let my youth burn brightly!"

Dressed in his signature green jumpsuit, Might Guy descended from above, landing forcefully in the center of the training ground.

"Yo, Kakashi! You're here too!"

Recognizing his eternal rival at a glance, Guy enthusiastically greeted him.

Kakashi silently tugged at his mask, as if trying to hide his face.

Of course, the ever-spirited Might Guy didn't notice Kakashi's reaction.

Or rather, even if he had, his personality wouldn't allow him to care.

He immediately moved to Kakashi's side, slung an arm around his shoulder, and declared loudly:

"Kakashi, my lifelong rival! Let's burn our youth together for Lord Danzo!"

Kakashi didn't respond—he simply and quietly slipped out of Guy's grip.

The others remained equally silent.

Was this guy… really suited for Root?

Wasn't he a bit too… lively?

Though everyone was thinking it, they kept their thoughts to themselves.

Everyone except Fū Yamanaka, Danzo's biggest fanboy.

"You idiot! This is Root! Keep your voice down!"

Fū harshly scolded him.

With a teammate like this, wouldn't their cover be blown immediately during a mission?

Just when it seemed like a major conflict was about to erupt, Might Guy suddenly scratched his bowl-cut head, looking awkward.

"Ah… I got a little too excited. Sorry about that."

His sincere apology left Fū momentarily speechless.

In the end, he could only begrudgingly swallow his frustration.

At this moment, Kakashi finally spoke up.

Rubbing his temple tiredly, he asked,

"Guy… why are you here in Root?"

Grinning, Guy answered,

"Because I went to the Hokage and asked to be transferred here!"

Kakashi frowned.

"So you applied… and the Hokage just agreed?"

Might Guy nodded matter-of-factly.

"Not only that, but the Hokage even encouraged me to shine in Root!"

Kakashi was speechless.

It seemed the Third Hokage thought Root was too quiet and had sent Might Guy here just to shake things up.

With Guy's addition, the team now had seven members.

"When is Lord Danzo going to show up?"

After waiting for a long time, Genma Shiranui finally couldn't help but ask.

Kakashi, on the other hand, remained expressionless.

If not for Guy's arrival, his face wouldn't have shown any reaction at all.

The others were starting to feel restless as well.

After all, it had already been an hour and a half since they arrived.

That meant the legendary Darkness of the Shinobi had kept them waiting for ninety minutes.

Just as Genma finished speaking—

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

A sudden, intensely sharp sound filled the air!

These recruits weren't weak—they had all been personally selected by Danzo.

Without hesitation, they instantly drew their weapons and turned toward the source of the noise.

From all directions, countless kunai materialized out of nowhere, shooting toward them from every angle!

Judging by the deadly whistling sound cutting through the air, these kunai were no mere training weapons—

They were real killing tools.

These weren't training kunai—they were real weapons.

In other words, if they couldn't dodge, they would die.

This realization sent everyone's adrenaline surging.

Except for Kakashi.

His expression remained calm, as if this trial was nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

And in truth, it was.

As the kunai rained down upon him, he weaved through them with effortless agility, his movements fluid and precise.

He looked like a dancer moving gracefully through a storm, only using his own kunai to deflect attacks when absolutely necessary.

It was almost artistic.

The others, however, weren't having such an easy time.

Might Guy… started breakdancing.

Supporting himself on his hands, he spun his legs rapidly like a street dancer, using his sheer physical strength and the generated wind pressure to deflect the incoming kunai.

Namiashi Rado immediately drew his black-bladed katana, deflecting as many kunai as he could.

The rest of the recruits were in similar situations.

The attack had come too suddenly, leaving them no time to form hand seals.

They could only rely on their raw taijutsu to defend themselves.

Within moments, several of them were injured.

The only exception was Aoba Yamashiro.

It was as if he had anticipated the attack.

The moment the kunai appeared, he immediately started forming hand seals.

By the time the kunai were about to strike, his jutsu was already complete.

A swarm of black crows erupted around him, their eerie cries filling the air.

Spinning rapidly, the crows formed a protective vortex around him, blocking every single kunai.

Not even a scratch.

His sharp reflexes and quick thinking caught even Kakashi's attention.

The others also glanced at him with various expressions.

Genma Shiranui openly complained:

"You knew there was an attack coming and didn't warn us?!"

Among those hit, Genma and Fū Yamanaka had suffered the most—mainly because neither of them specialized in taijutsu.

But their reactions were very different.

Genma was grimacing in pain.

Fū, on the other hand… looked excited.

As for Ibiki Morino?

These minor injuries meant nothing to him.

After all, in his infamous interrogation chamber, he would personally endure the pain he inflicted on prisoners.

That terrifying mental fortitude was why he was known as one of Konoha's top interrogators.

In response to Genma's frustration, Aoba calmly adjusted his sunglasses.

"I suspected something, but it happened too fast to warn you. Sorry."

Genma clicked his tongue, quickly bandaging his wounds before casually draping an arm over Aoba's shoulder.

"If this happens again, next time, give me a heads-up, yeah?"

At that moment, a shadowy figure, leaning on a cane, finally emerged from the darkness of the steel bridge above them.

"Welcome to Root, everyone."
