Chapter 51: On the subject of children
"Alix why didn't you think of me first if you had a composition to sell? Am I scary?"
In an hours time, all negotiations had been successfully carried out and a contract was signed. The moment director Ban and the lawyers left, Yura, her mother-in-law turned to her and asked.
Caught unawares, Alix stared back blankly at Yura.
"That's not the case madam Yura." Jin Kang rushed in to answer for her friend. "Director Ban just happened upon us when Alix was recording in the studio."
Yura nodded and looked at Alix again. You explain, her eyes conveyed.
"Ermm, mother-in-law, it's just as Jin Jin has explained, I only recently started composing again. To be honest, I couldn't bring myself to do it for the longest time after my fingers broke."
"Oh, is that the case? Does this mean your family has two composers? Why haven't I heard about this before?"
Having one daughter as classical music genius composer and pianist had elevated the reputation of the Lin family in elite society. Having two daughters with such a reputation would be even better.
It would have people envious and curious about how they raised their children.
"Oh you have heard some of her compositions for sure, they have even won awards. They just_____"
"Jin Kang." Alix raised her voice.
She was not ready to pull the rug out from under Lin Billi's feet. Her reputation had to die bit by bit. A slow death was the worst kind of death.
"What is your friend saying?" Very curious, Yura looked at Alix for answers.
She had a resume on this daughter-in-law of hers. Nothing in there portrayed her as impressive. Had her lawyers missed something in the background check?
Which compositions of hers had won awards?
"Don't mind Jin Kang mother-in-law, she talks a little too much sometimes."
Jin Kang pouted and took one more sip of wine from her glass. She was willing to shout the truth from the roof tops if need be. Why was Alix the complete opposite of her?
Alix paid no attention to Jin Knag as her eyes darted to the entrance to the restaurant as the doors slid open again. Every time they did, she would look over.
"Caishen's meeting will be running a little long dear." Yura mentioned.
Alix looked down and blushed shyly.
Yura laughed and put her hand on Alix's head.
"It's okay, don't be shy. I am happy that you like my son even in his present condition. I also know that you are taking good care of him and Xiaobo.
Honestly, I think I am now happier that you married him over anyone else. Have you both discussed the future, like children?"
Jin Kang suddenly start to cough, and she put down the wine glass.
Alix on the other hand froze, thinking that perhaps she had misheard what her mother-in-law had said. She and Caishen had only been sharing the same bed for two days and held hands out of necessity a few times.
How could they be discussing children already? They did not even know what their future held?
She grabbed her bag and scrambled to get up before any more questions could be asked.
"Mother, look at the time, we are running late. I have a full class of students to teach."
"Do we?" Jin Kang asked.
"Jin Kang." Alix called her friend through gritted teeth.
As friends of many years, they did not need to say more to understand each other.
"Yes, we do." Jin Kang changed her words.
Yura had a feeling that this was a little fib but she let it play out as Alix wanted. She would find another opportunity to press the issue again.
"I ordered for some side dishes from this restaurant for you. It's a special service for their VIP guests. Tell me when you run out and I will send more."
Alix smiled stiffly and nodded.
"Thank you mother-in-law." she replied softly.
They walked out of the restaurant together, Yura projecting absolute confidence, Alix politeness and Jin Kang amusement.
"Send me pictures of Xiaobo when you get time. I miss that little trouble maker."
They shared a few more words and escorted Yura to her car.
Once she left, Alix sighed and her stiff shoulders sagged.
Standing beside her, Jin Kang bumped into her arm and said, "So, children, huh."
Alix raised her hand and clenched it into a fist. Then, she waved it in front of Jin Kang's face.
"Don't even talk about it." she threatened.
Jin Kang took a seat back and laughed at her friend.
"You must admit that it's funny and I don't think it's the end of this topic. Your in-laws are surely bound to bring it up again.
Zhang Caishen is already in his thirties and he was involved in a life threatening accident. That kind of life and death situation makes you reevaluate your priorities. The Zhang's must be in a hurry to see their next generation as soon as possible."
They entered the car and set off the school. Alix pretended that Jin Kang had not raised a heavy topic and she played the game on her phone to distract herself.
Jin Kang looked at other car models and downloaded pictures of cars that were aesthetically pleasing.
When they did make it back to the school, madam Qian's face was what welcomed them. She was sitting in one of the four chairs which they left outside the entrance for visitors.
"Crap, she is here personally to chase us out." Jin Kang spoke in shock.
I knew you would come, Alix thought.
"I don't think so." Alix said. "I am going to send money to your account so that you go car shopping on your own."
She walked over to madam Qian and smiled. This could go either way, but at this point, Alix was not as worried as she had been before twenty five million hit her bank account.
"Madam, should we talk inside my office?"
Madam Qian did not reply, but she led the way inside, leaving Alix to follow after her.
Alix scoffed and laughed under her breath.
If all went successfully, she would see who was holding their nose high between the two of them.
