Chapter 180: Home sweet home
The wonderful familiar smell of lavender hit Alix like a bullet the moment the doors to their house were opened. She closed her eyes for a few seconds and drew in the sweet scent.
"Home sweet home." She whispered.
She had barely taken five steps inside when two small bodies catapulted themselves at her.
Meow... Majesty cried out.
"Auntie." Xiaobo yelled.
She caught both cat and boy in her arms. She couldn't fathom if they were excited to see her or had been fighting and were both seeking justice.
"What's the matter my cuties?" She asked them.
Zhang Bo's voice followed his son thirty seconds later. "Xiaobo get down."
Alix tilted her head over Xiaobo's body and noticed Zhang Bo. What is he doing here?
As she was wondering about that, Xiaobo wiggled and went down as his father desired.
"We were not expecting you." Caishen wheeled past Alix and went further into the house.
She followed him, Majesty in one hand and Xiaobo's little hand in the other.
"That one was clamoring to come home." He used air quotes when he said home. Technically this was not Xiaobo's home, Zhang Bo's house was his home.
"I should buy a few floors here to make life more comfortable for Xiaobo. What do you think?"
Alix diverted her steps and moved to the kitchen. She gave the brothers privacy to talk.
"Nanny Luo." She called out.
"She went to the market with uncle Ju." Xiaobo told her.
The kitchen was empty, not even nanny Wang was inside. It was almost two hours past lunch, way beyond eating time.
"Are you hungry?" She asked Xiabo?
Meow.
"Yes." Was the response from the cat.
"You are always hungry." She told the cat.
Xiaobo thought she was talking to him and he shook his head, denying the assumption. "I am not hungry auntie."
She ruffled his hair, leaned down and kissed his head. Then she replied, "Not you sweetie, I am talking to this greedy cat."
Xiaobo giggled and nodded. "Majesty is always eating. He will become fat very soon and he won't be able to walk. My friend Runchu has a fat cat."
Alix put Majesty down, walked to the pantry and got some cat food and beef jerky for Majesty.
Xiaobo followed her, babbling on about his friend and she indulged him with a smile and small responses in between.
"Runchu has a horse too, and two dogs. He is always showing everyone pictures of his animal farm. They have chickens too, he said chicken poop stinks. Auntie, does it stink?"
"Ho, my Xiaobo, why does it sound like you ha e never seen a chicken?"
Xiaobo smiled shyly and Alix laughed. Unbelievable, she thought. Was it really possible that he had made it to eight years without ever touching a chicken? Was this a side effect of being born into a rich family or was it a side of education the Zhang's ignored.
"It's called being born with a golden spoon." The system said.
On the virtual screen, a golden spoon danced comically, controlled by the blue elf.
"Huh!" She replied.
The blue elf rolled it's eyes and curved it's lips, judging her. Was she so foolish that she had no idea what it meant.
"It means he was born to extremely rich parents of high standing in society. Tch! And you claimed not to be dumb." It told her.
"Don't insult me, I was just confused because I am more used to hearing that one was born with a silver spoon." She explained, quite flabbergasted by the dumb accusation even though this was not the first and would probably not be the last time the system would be making it.
She mixed food and put it in Majesty's bowl.
Then, she got a smaller bowl and took ice cream from the fridge. She scooped some for Xiaobo and extended it to him.
"Thank you auntie." He accepted it with a smile and found his chair around the kitchen counter. It was there because often times, when he was staying over and Caishen worked late, he would eat in here with Wang Ma.
"Mmm, you are welcome sweetie." She ruffled his hair as she replied.
She was about to sit down with her own bowl of ice cream when another meow joined them. Caishen's baby sauntered into the kitchen and made her way to Majesty.
Meow.
An angry sound escaped Majesty's mouth and he lifted a paw swiping at Baby not to come closer.
"I will prepare a second bowl." With a sigh, Alix did as she said and gave Baby food as well.
Then, she sat down and got her phone out to play the game for a while.
Xiaobo, when he noticed what she planned to do run out of the kitchen as fast as his little legs carry him and he returned with his own gaming console.
Alix didn't comment, but she could hear Caishen's voice in the back of her mind telling her that she was teaching the boy bad habits.
She didn't put her headphones on and played with one hand. The other hand was scooping ice cream slowly. This was the ice cream she got from her fans. It came in a silver tin with thin glass like lining on the inside which kept it in a perpetual frozen state.
Even when it was out of the container, it melted at a pace slower than the normal ice cream. Best of all, it was smooth, rich and creamy.
Her only complaint was the fact that it didn't come with a proper label. It had the initials IKG on the container but nothing else. Not even the flavor was named.
So, while it tasted fruity, she could not name the fruit with precision.
"Your brother and his mother have made it safely to Xicheng." The blue elf told her.
"I thought we are gaming, why is your mind elsewhere?" She responded.
"You have taken on an herb delivery task. I don't think you need my assistance, especially now that you have safely secured a spot among the guilds that will take on the final boss of the second world." It responded.
A smile of pride filled her face. The sweet victory of that task was still lingering in her mind.
"I wouldn't relax if I were you. Don't you want more teleportation scrolls?" It asked her.
"I do, that's why I am doing herb tasks. I want orchids for sale. There is an orchid exhibition next week and I believe that I can make some quick easy money from there." She responded to it.
Someone bought an orchid for as high as two million yuan the previous year. Alix remembered because it mad headline news. Some of the common rewards she received were flowers, seeds, fruits and gems.
If she could sell off some of them for high prices, she would happy. She recalled the gold fish in the fish tank and a brilliant thought crossed her mind.
"Oh and when the fish exhibition begins, we will do the same."
The system didn't respond verbally but on the virtual screen, eleven recommended tasks appeared.
"These are the most likely tasks which will guarantee you rewards in plant form." They system told her.
She hurried off to finish her current task and take on these. She would finish them all before the next day.
