The Witcher: Wolf School's Hunting Notes

Chapter 399: 400. A Bountiful Harvest!

"Divine intervention! A miracle!"

"By Melitele's grace…"

"Did you see that light…"

The chaotic clamor stirred Allen awake.

"Hah~"

He instinctively sat up from the ground, shivering violently as the biting cold struck him to the core.

A faint, icy mist, like the breath of a frost dragon, exhaled from Allen's mouth, coating the marble floor—still marked with traces of the ritual—in a layer of pure white frost.

"The White Frost…"

He stared blankly at the white traces on the floor, muttering to himself.

It took a long while before the sweltering heat of July finally chased away the chill within him, allowing his thoughts to flow normally again.

"I must have blacked out," he murmured, tilting his head toward the noisy commotion outside the shrine room. "But it couldn't have been for long. With how radiant Melitele's light was when she departed and her promise to grant Ianna divine magic, this place would have been swarming with people by now."

"This is absurd!" Allen looked down.

The frost on the floor had already melted into faint water stains in the summer heat.

One cutscene could have such a lasting impact...

Wait!

What about the seven fused golden chests? What did they contain? And the remaining two golds and two purples?

Allen hurriedly opened his Witcher's Journal.

[Warning! Warning! Warning!]

The moment the pages of the Journal unfurled, three blood-red words burned into his vision.

The warning, crimson like freshly spilled blood, bathed everything before him in an eerie red hue.

The flickering candlelight turned the compassionate face of Melitele's statue into something grotesque.

The system notifications followed—a long string of warnings, much like the celestial conjunction alarms when a Hunt quest was completed. However, this time, there was no "detected signs of a celestial conjunction" afterward—just pure warnings.

Allen recalled the relentless dinging of the system notifications at the end of the cutscene. Looking at the unnervingly bizarre system alerts before him, a chilling thought crossed his mind.

Could it be… that he had really seen the White Frost?

In an instant.

The image of that "window" radiating intense white light flashed through his mind. It blinked...

Allen shuddered involuntarily.

"What exactly is the White Frost?"

Although the cutscene had revealed a lot—"Avallac'h leading the Wild Hunt in a desperate race through the Spiral to transport something," "the White Frost indeed chasing the Wild Hunt," "the White Frost seemingly corrupting the lower layers of the Spiral"...

The more he learned, the more questions he had.

-----------------------------

Shrine…

Melitele…

Miracle…

The sound of footsteps grew louder outside the shrine room. The miracle of Melitele's descent was quickly spreading among the people.

However, as the shrine room was the heart of Melitele's temple and the holy place where the high priestess served the goddess, no one dared enter without Ianna's permission—especially after a miracle had just occurred.

"But I'd better make use of the time I have. There are still plenty of treasure chests to open…"

Setting his questions about the White Frost aside for now, Allen focused his intent.

----------------------------------

[Ding! Aen Elle's Treasure Chests x18 Opened]

[Obtained: Wild Hunt's Warlord Armor (Red) x1, Unicorn Horn (Gold) x1, Wild Hunt's Standard Fireball Spell (Gold) x1, Parnoys' Staff (Purple) x1, Thera's Rose Pendant (Purple) x1, Experience Orbs x34]

"The Wild Hunt's Warlord Armor…"

Allen's eyes immediately landed on the blood-red text indicating a transcendent-tier item.

Although the system described it as a single armor set, upon inspecting his inventory, it appeared as separate golden-tier pieces: helmet, breastplate, gauntlets, pauldrons, greaves, and boots.

Each piece had its own effects, much like Francesca's gift to him, "Night.Shade."

However, the design of the Warlord Armor was far more akin to the two Wild Hunt warriors Allen had seen days ago: sinister steel ribs across the chest, sharp crimson spikes on the shoulders, knees, and elbows. It was nothing like the long robes, floral motifs, and elegant tassels of the elf-like attire he had seen in the cutscene.

---------------------------------

[Name: Wild Hunt's Warlord Armor]

[Type: Magical Item]

[Abilities:

1. Helmet - Spectral Skull: Masks the wearer's face with a spectral illusion, instilling fear in non-extraordinary beings and occasionally affecting extraordinary beings.

2. Breastplate - Phantom Ghost: Grants ghostly intangibility, making the wearer immune to physical attacks upon activation.

3. Gauntlets - Iron Grip: Enhances strength and grants immunity to disarm effects.

4. Pauldrons - Elemental Balance: Stabilizes elemental energies, significantly suppressing elemental volatility.

5. Greaves - Arcane Amplifier: Increases spellcasting potency and enhances mana gathering.

6. Boots - Tread of the Wastes: Negates adverse effects of terrain such as swamps, quagmires, and snowy fields.

Set Bonuses:

1. Spiral's Path: Allows the wearer to traverse the Spiral physically.

2. Rebirth: Upon receiving a fatal blow, the armor can be sacrificed, either actively or passively, to transport the wearer to a predetermined location via the Spiral. Current saved location: Tir ná Lia.

---

[Note: Created by the elven sages Avallac'h and Eredin after surviving the pursuit of the White Frost and pillaging most of the worlds conquered by Aen Elle. For the long-lived Aen Elle, every kin who could and would fight for their people was as precious as gold.]

Every piece of the Wild Hunt's Warlord Armor was incredibly practical, and more importantly, laser-focused on the purpose of waging war across worlds.

Illusions concealed the elven elegance of their delicate beauty, while enhanced strength and magical potency made every Aen Elle donning this armor a terrifying force on the battlefield.

Allen reviewed the details of each component, cold sweat forming on his brow, especially when he saw the effect "immune to disarmament."

Thankfully, when he ambushed the two Wild Hunt members earlier, their staffs had been carelessly planted into the ground. Otherwise, even with the element of surprise, the sheer amplification of their abilities through this armor would have made them formidable opponents.

It was no exaggeration to say that the Warlord Armor provided an all-encompassing enhancement to its wearer.

Even the seemingly less useful effect of the "Pauldrons - Elemental Balance"—balancing elemental forces and suppressing elemental instability—struck Allen as particularly chilling.

The Wild Hunt had seemingly devised an unconventional use for this effect. By actively triggering elemental instabilities and then controlling them with precision, they wielded power like that of Parnoys, the Wild Hunt mage.

Fire, the most temperamental element, was commanded to rage—and just as quickly, to cease.

Even the most skilled fire sorcerers of the Northern Realms knew that once fire magic spiraled out of control, it had to be contained within five seconds, or the caster would be consumed in flames, reduced to a screaming human torch. This was a principle hammered home by Magus Hen Gedymdeith during his lectures.

Thus, even though the Warlord Armor's strength and magic amplification were vaguely described, Allen instinctively knew they must be immensely powerful.

The individual effects of the six pieces of armor alone already justified the cost of seven legendary treasure chests. Let alone the additional set effects.

- "The Spiral cannot be traversed with a mortal body? Interesting, I've learned something new..."

- "Rebirth…teleports to a predesignated location..."

- "No wonder the druids in the forest were so obsessed with Wild Hunt corpses. It seems the ones attacking Ban Ard weren't entirely dead..."

He hesitated.

"...But that doesn't seem entirely true. At least, the Wild Hunt member called Sera truly fell to me, which suggests these effects aren't absolute."

When his gaze fell upon the Current Recorded Point, Allen's voice faltered, a note of astonishment creeping in:

"Tir ná Lia!"

Tir ná Lia, the capital city of the Aen Elle in another world. It was the seat of King Auberon Muircetach and the heart of the Wild Hunt's operations.

Allen stared at the unassuming text written in the common tongue on his interface, deep in thought. This teleportation ability could prove more useful than any other feature of the armor.

As the commotion outside the statue chamber grew louder, Allen shifted his focus back to his other loot.

--------------------------------

[Name: Unicorn Horn]

[Type: Alchemical Reagent / Magical Material / Relic]

[Effects:

1. Antidote: The unicorn horn can neutralize all poisons.

2. Toxin Detection: It can identify the presence of poisons.]

[Note: Unicorns are capable of traversing not only different worlds but also time itself. Detoxification and toxin detection might only scratch the surface of its potential. What do you think? ]

Allen couldn't help but agree.

This was the first magical material he'd encountered that came with stats and a golden rarity, no less. And unicorns were the only magical creatures known to rival the Wild Hunt.

For now, however, its uses would require experimentation. He shelved it for later.

--------------------------------

[Name: Standard Wild Hunt Fireball Spell]

[Type: Fire Element Advanced Spell]

[Learning Requirements: Fire Affinity 40, Mysticism 70]

[Effects: Allows the caster to conjure a fireball with extreme heat, powerful explosive force, and incredible velocity. The spell's potency is only limited by the caster's magical energy. ]

[Note: This elegantly structured spell would drive the Brotherhood of Sorcerers or the academies of Ban Ard and Aretuza into a frenzy. It's worth several top-tier papers and could launch a promising sorcerer's career. Too bad you're just a Witcher...]

Allen recalled the destructive power of the fireball spell used by Parnoys of the Wild Hunt.

A mere few fireballs had shattered the protective barrier of an entire druid circle, slain seven intermediate druids, and flung five senior druids—one of whom was a Source—into the air like ragdolls.

Unfortunately, Allen's current Fire Affinity was far from the required level to learn the spell.

---------------------

[Name: Parnoys's Staff]

[Type: Magical Artifact]

[Effect: Enhances Fire Element Magic Efficiency]

[Note: Remember this above all—specialization is the key to true mastery.]

------------------------

The staff was clearly designed to complement the Standard Wild Hunt Fireball Spell.

Still, for now, Allen set it aside in his stash.

---------------------------

[Name: Serra's Rose Pendant]

[Type: Magical Trinket]

[Effect: Preserves the dream of a rose using masterful alchemical techniques.]

[Note: While its purple rarity might seem underwhelming, it only shows that some people are willing to pay dearly for spiritual indulgence.]

Allen was curious about the so-called dream of the rose.

Unfortunately, this was hardly the time for a detailed examination.

After going through the contents of the 18 treasure chests looted from the Aen Elle, Allen grew increasingly intrigued by the Eternal Ones' Memory Crystals.

"It's a shame I missed the animations for the remaining two golden and one purple loot due to what seemed like the presence of the White Frost," Allen sighed.

Still, he didn't regret his decision. The Harvest Blessing clearly had a time limit, and he had to open all the chests at once to maximize its effect. Splitting the process wouldn't have been an option. Even if he were to do it all over again, his choice would remain the same.

Besides...

Allen had a hunch that the "window" that knocked him unconscious might be key to uncovering the core of the White Frost.

Sadly, there just wasn't enough information yet.

---------------------------

The sound of hurried footsteps reached his sharp ears.

"Ianna, Vesemir... and a sorceress," Allen murmured, immediately recognizing the approaching figures.

-----------------------------

[Treasure Chests Remaining:

Sorcerer's Chests × 18

Scurver's Chests × 5

Alghoul Chests × 5

Ghoul Chests × 5

Rotfiend Chests × 5 ]

With 38 treasure chests left in his inventory, Allen quickly muttered a prayer, "Praise be to the Mother of All Things…" before gritting his teeth and opening all of them.

The haul wasn't bad.

Aside from rotting flesh (which would serve as food for the rock trolls), he gained:

[67 Experience Orbs

11 Small Experience Orbs

Two golden and one purple item:

Purple: Scurver Heart Essence.

Gold: Two alchemy formulas.]

------------------------------------

[Formula 1: Hanged Man's Venom]

[Name: Hanged Man's Venom]

[Type: Sword Oil Formula]

[Crafting Requirement: Alchemy Level 1]

[Ingredients: Dog Tallow × 1, Arenaria × 4]

[Effect: Enhances damage against humans and humanoids when applied to weapons.]

[Note: Even witchers are human, after all… ]

-------------------------------

[ Formula 2: Grapeshot]

[Name: Grapeshot]

[Type: Bomb Formula]

[Crafting Requirement: Alchemy Level 2]

[Ingredients: Saltpeter × 1, Calcium equum × 2]

[Effect:

1. Inflicts shrapnel damage and minor fire damage to enemies within the blast radius.

2. Destroys monster nests.]

[Note: Luck's on your side!]

----------------------------------

The Hanged Man's Venom wasn't immediately useful, but Allen knew it would come in handy against the Wild Hunt or sorcerers in the future. However, its utility might depend on whether it could weaken magical barriers—otherwise, it would be limited in scope as just a poison.

The Grapeshot, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise.

Though he wasn't certain how effective it would be in the field, both saltpeter and calcium equum were commonly stored in temples, allowing him to craft several bombs for Arthur and the others.

Unlike dwarven blasting charges—massive, half-human-sized devices weighing 20-30 kilograms—the Grapeshot was lightweight and portable. The dwarven explosives were too cumbersome for ordinary humans to carry without compromising their combat effectiveness, and setting them up to destroy monster nests was even more challenging.

The Grapeshot offered a more practical alternative. If one wasn't enough, he could always toss in a few more.

--------------------------------

The footsteps were now within 10 meters of the sanctuary door.

Allen calmly scanned the statue chamber, hastily erasing the ritual traces on the floor.

The windows of the chamber were high and narrow, too small for a person to squeeze through. Silently, he donned the Nightshade, activating its invisibility and sound-dampening effects, and concealed himself behind the goddess's statue.

It wasn't that he intended to hide anything.

But the goddess's miracles were sensitive matters by nature, and exposing any connection between them and himself in front of outsiders, especially with Ianna's stance uncertain, could lead to unnecessary trouble.

More importantly...

He had no intention of informing Ianna of his plans to join the fight.

For now, it was better to let things be.

"Hopefully, Vesemir hasn't mentioned my visit to the statue chamber to anyone else," Allen thought, reassured by Vesemir's generally discreet nature.
