The Werewolf King's Bride

Chapter 527: Always Ready

(From Ruby's Perspective)

"How is she now?" Luc asked as the King came to the magic tower to leave his son with us.

When Her Highness was working too hard without getting rest, all of us got very anxious for her. Luc told me what he had seen that one day. I got way too worried and tried to find ways how to make her rest. However, in the end, I knew I could do nothing. Neither could Luc.

I had seen how she acted during the war. She was not herself. And she was changing. She was not the person who married His Majesty as the innocent and insecure woman who came from a very humble background. She was now the Queen and one of the most powerful dark mages ever. She knew her worth very well and acted like her position.

It was all good. But I was afraid she was pushing herself too far. She was expecting too many things from herself, even when her loved ones did not, her husband did not.

"She is better now. She gets enough rest," His Highness said.

"How did you persuade her?" I asked, surprised.

"I did not," His Highness shrugged. "Her body did."

"Her body?" Luc mumbled.

It took me a while to understand what he meant. Then, it all became clear. So, that was why His Highness had been leaving Dion with us for hours every single day for the last fifteen days. We loved our nephew and loved having him with us, but we did not know the exact reason he did it.

Well, knowing His Highness, I should have thought he would do something like this to prevent Her Highness from using her power to the point of fatigue.

"Does she still…?"

"She does still work, but not as much as she used to," His Highness answered even before I finished my question.

He kissed Dion gently on the forehead before handing him to me. I was truly shocked at how much the King who did not want a child loved his son. Her Highness had always been right. His Highness just was not sure of it himself, but if he tried, he could be a good father too.

"What did he mean by that?" Luc asked after the King left. He still had not figured it out.

"He meant he is tiring her body enough and she can't work because of fatigue," I explained. "No wonder they leave their son to us for a few hours a day. Arrange his bottles and blankets, Luc."

"Tiring her body? Do they exercise together? Ah, they must be taking a walk or something, or maybe hiking?"

I was not sure whose head I wanted to slap, mine or his. My husband was a genius mage, the master of the magic tower of Querencia, but he also was someone whose head was in the clouds about things that people of his age could easily understand.

"For god's sake, Luc, he meant sex, damn it!"

"What? Sex? He meant he has so much sex with her that she cannot work much? Ah, so that explains. He could have been clear from the beginning."

"He was. You are just thick-headed."

He shrugged. "At least, they left Dion with us. Look how big he already is. Isn't he growing too fast?"

"It just feels like so," I said. "We have seen him since he was born. He truly seems to be growing so fast… It still feels like yesterday that I have seen a really little baby in King Ford's arms."

"That said, I am jealous that he got to be his godfather and not me," Luc said.

"You are already his uncle. Why would Her Highness make her brother her son's godfather? That's odd," I pointed out.

"Uncles cannot be godfathers?"

"Don't be ridiculous, Luc. You already have a relationship with Dion- uncle and nephew. Godfather is another relationship. When you already have one, why would you get another one, or need another one?"

"What does a godfather do anyway?"

"Don't you have a godfather?"

"Nah. Do you?"

"Yeah, my father's best friend. He died three years ago though," I said. "He was a good man. We had a good time whenever he came over. He liked me a lot, you know. So, basically, my godfather was to support me with anything.

Kind of like a father figure. That's why the term is 'godfather'. He was my guardian and in case something happened to my parents, he was to take care of me."

"What if he doesn't want to?"

"Then, he would have refused to be a godfather. It's not like you are forced to be one," I said.

Dion was sleeping. I placed him in his crib and watched his beautiful little face. "My godfather was really loving. We used to run in the garden together. He was Reece's godfather too," I said.

"Do you miss him?" Luc asked softly, rubbing my nape.

"Kind of. He had helped our family as much as he could during hard times. He was poor too, so it was not enough. But, at least, he tried," I said. "You know, Kind Ford might be… Actually, it's rather weird that a King and a Queen of a kingdom befriend and get truly close to the King of another kingdom. He is a good friend if not a good person.

Kind of like King Demetrius."

"Nah, Demetrius and he are not the same. But yes, both of them are true friends. If I had any doubt before, the moment I heard what he did for Blue, how he had been there when she gave birth and how he remained with her son and protected him, when he could get rid of the heir of the King of Querencia. I am not ever doubting this man's loyalty to his friends. No, just friend actually.

Demetrius said he is not close to him. It's just Blue. He is Blue's friend and a really good one as well. Who ever thought this could happen?"

Dion woke up just then and started crying. Luc hurried to get one of his milk bottles and I held him in my arms as Luc fed him. Both of us were getting used to taking care of a newborn rather well. If we ever had a kid, at least we would not be inexperienced. Her Highness did not want to leave Dion with us at first as he might poop or vomit and we would have to clean him.

We did not mind it and said it was fine.

Dion was our nephew after all. It was no problem at all.

"Did you see how Demetrius acts around Dion? I have never seen him like that," Luc said.

"Obviously. None of us did. He did not have a son back then," I said. It was more like he did not have Her Highness in his life back then. The King had changed because of his wife. Not entirely though.

No one could change entirely. But he did change, even if it was just a bit. He changed in a good way and all the credit went to Her Highness. I had seen everything with my own two eyes.

"Do you want to have a child too?" Luc asked.

"Why? Do you?"

"I am asking you," he said.

"Not really, honestly. Not so soon," I said. "I was worried that you might want to have one soon or never want to have one at all."

"I don't care, actually. We can have a child, or we cannot. It doesn't matter. I don't think it's a must. Besides, it's not like I need an heir like the King. The master of the magic tower could be anyone.

If we never have a child, we can always have Dion in our life. He is already like our own son."

"Kind of, yeah. But someday, I want to have a child," I said. "Not so soon, however. I still want to… just stay like this a little longer."

Luc kissed me on the forehead. "Well, that's okay. We can have one later. You know, I am always ready," he smirked, "to make one. Just say the word."

I chuckled. "What are you saying in front of a child?"

"He doesn't understand a word of what we are saying. Do you, Dion? Do you understand what uncle and aunt are talking about?"

The little child could not care less about Luc's words and kept on drinking milk from his bottle.

"Every time I look at his face, I have this feeling he will be just like Demetrius when he grows up. Then, both father and son will drive me crazy."

"I think he will be more like Her Highness in personality than His Highness, even if he looks like His Highness."

"Or, maybe a mix of both. Let's hope he becomes like Blue. We both will get peace. Not just us, but literally everyone. His father is crazy. His mother can be crazy from time to time, but she at least has more basic sense than that dumbass."
