Chapter 395: 395:Escape
Adrian stood, his sharp features marred by a faint scowl as he assessed Daniel's transformed state before turning to leave.
"Interesting," he murmured.
Despite the reassurances of his team, Daniel felt an unease crawling up his spine—a sensation he couldn't shake no matter how much he tried to rationalize it.
He glanced at his team. Their faces were grim and determined. His suit thrummed with latent energy, ready to react to any threat.
Yet, deep inside, a thought churned ominously in his mind.
'I can probably take him down with this suit and these people. Removing Adrian might eliminate a dangerous foe.'
Hovering mid-air, Daniel's body froze mid-air as he noticed Adrian smirking, his calm demeanor stating as if everything was under his control, which pissed him off.
Aurora's voice cut sharply into his mind.
[No, that's idiotic.]
Daniel clenched his jaw, his fingers twitching against the controls.
'No! I need to do something. You don't understand.'
The memory of Adrian's earlier touch resurfaced, sending a chill through his body. The current that had passed through him was unnatural as if something was winding its way into his mind. It wasn't just physical pain; it was invasive, probing. Every instinct screamed that Adrian wasn't an ordinary man.
Without warning, he made his decision.
"Change course!" Daniel barked.
The guards exchanged wary glances but complied. Aurora's voice sharpened, almost pleading.
[Daniel, disengage! This is irrational.
But Daniel ignored her. His thrusters flared to life, propelling him toward Adrian at breakneck speed. Amidst the chaos, Adrian remained calm, his posture calm yet commanding.
The sudden shift caught Adrian and his men off guard. Daniel streaked toward them like a meteor, the glowing lines of his suit leaving a fiery trail in the dim light.
The guards reacted immediately, unleashing gunfire. Bullets ricocheted harmlessly off Daniel's armor, the metallic pings drowned by the chaos. Even the grenade that followed barely made him flinch.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The explosions lit up the area, sending debris in every direction. Daniel was thrown slightly off course but landed with a heavy crash, his boot carving grooves into the ground. Smoke billowed around him, and through the haze, he surged forward.
Adrian remained still, his eyes narrowing as Daniel closed the distance.
Daniel leaped into the air with a roar, his armored fist gleaming with raw energy. He brought it down with all his might, aiming for Adrian's head.
BOOOOM!
The resulting shockwave tore through the warehouse, shattering windows and toppling nearby crates. For a moment, Daniel thought he had landed a decisive blow.
But then, a searing pain erupted in his arm as Adrian's fist met his own.
The force rippled through Daniel's suit, making his arm quiver violently. Despite the advanced technology designed to absorb impacts, the sheer power of Adrian's punch was staggering.
Unprotected by any visible armor, Adrian stood unscathed. His expression was blank, almost bored.
"What… how is this possible?" Daniel's voice cracked as he struggled to steady himself.
Adrian's smirk deepened as he unfurled his fingers to clamp Daniel's fist.
CRACK!
A sickening sound filled the air as Adrian's grip crushed the armored gauntlet, denting the suit and sending waves of pain shooting up Daniel's arm.
'What the hell is this? It even went through the suit…' Daniel's thoughts raced, panic beginning to take hold.
Adrian's reptilian eyes glinted with something between amusement and menace.
Aurora's voice cut through Daniel's panicked thoughts.
[Disengage. Now!]
In response, the suit's fist guard emitted a hissing sound as freezing smoke poured out, encasing Adrian's arm in a layer of frost.
BOOM!
A blast erupted, flinging Adrian backwards. Daniel staggered, his instincts screaming at him to retreat.
[Run!] Aurora's command was immediate.
The suit's thrusters ignited with a deafening roar, propelling Daniel skyward. He shot straight through the roof ceiling, leaving debris raining down as he disappeared into the night.
Back on the ground, Adrian slowly stood, brushing off shards of ice and debris. His guards scrambled to regroup, but he waved them off.
His arm, still frozen from the blast—hung limply at his side, the flesh shredded to reveal the skeletal structure beneath.
But then, something grotesque began.
The mangled flesh started to bubble and grow as if knitting itself back together in raw and squishy layers. The fingers reformed and the skin smoothed over in mere seconds.
Adrian flexed his regenerated hand, his face morphing in eerie waves until it settled into a new visage.
The handsome features faded, replaced by someone far more familiar.
Walter.
"Evan…" Walter muttered, his voice tinged with cold amusement. "You surely have lots of tricks, don't you?"
_____
The night sky stretched vast and dark, punctuated only by the distant shimmer of city lights and the occasional flashes of lightning in the clouds. Daniel soared through the air, his thrusters roaring as he left the chaos behind. His mind was still reeling from the encounter with Adrian—or whatever that thing was—but he forced himself to focus.
Far ahead, a cluster of his guard squad hovered in formation, their suits glinting faintly in the moonlight.
"Sir!" One of the guards broke the formation, speeding closer to Daniel. "The evacuation plan is in motion. We've got clearance to exit USL airspace. However…"
The guard hesitated, his eyes darting to the radar feed on his HUD.
"What?" Daniel barked, his tone sharper than intended.
"There's been a shift in the situation. We're catching the flight mid-air, but enemy anti-air defenses are active. They know we're here."
Daniel's lips thinned. "How much time do we have?"
"Ten minutes, sir. But the air defenses are already locking onto us. Aurora's working on a countermeasure."
Aurora's voice echoed in his ear.
[Daniel, I can disable their systems remotely, but it will expose our tech capabilities. Should I proceed?]
"No," Daniel growled. "They can't know what we're capable of. We'll handle it ourselves."
A sudden alert blared through the squad's comms.
[Incoming: Anti-aircraft missiles detected. Five targets locked on.]
"Break formation!" Daniel shouted.

The squad scattered like startled birds, their suits twisting and diving to avoid the missiles streaking toward them. Daniel surged upward, his thrusters roaring at maximum. The first missile streaked past him, close enough to leave a searing trail of heat.
[Evasive maneuvers!] Aurora's voice was calm but urgent, cut through.
Daniel spun mid-air, his suit's gyroscopic stabilizers compensating for the rapid shift. He banked hard to the right, narrowly avoiding a second missile. Around him, his guards weren't faring much better, but their training and advanced suits kept them one step ahead of the explosions.
One of the guards fired flares from his suit, distracting two missiles that veered off course and detonated harmlessly in the distance. Another launched a small drone equipped with EMP pulses, which zipped toward a cluster of missiles and released a pulse that disabled their guidance systems. The missiles spiraled out of control, exploding far from the group.
"Good work!" Daniel called out, weaving through the chaos.
A third missile locked onto Daniel, its relentless trajectory impossible to shake.
Aurora intervened. [Deploying decoy.]
From Daniel's suit, a small spherical device shot out, emitting a burst of electromagnetic signals. The missile honed in on the decoy and detonated mid-air. The shockwave rattled Daniel's suit but left him unscathed.
"Clear!" Daniel's voice rang out as the squad burst through the enemy's defensive perimeter.
Ahead, their flight a massive stealth aircraft appeared, cloaked in the shadows of the clouds. The rear hatch was already open, the faint glow of interior lights guiding them in.
[Brace for docking!] Aurora instructed.
One by one, the guards entered the aircraft, their suits magnetizing to the deck. Daniel was the last to land, his thrusters shutting down as his boots touched down on the platform.
The hatch sealed shut, and the aircraft's engines roared to life, propelling them out of USL airspace.
As Daniel removed his helmet, the events of the night replayed in his mind. Adrian's unnatural strength, the eerie invasion of his mind, the way the missiles had hunted them down with relentless precision—none of it felt coincidental. Too deliberate.
"Aurora," he said quietly, his voice laced with tension. "Monitor for any follow-up pursuit. I want to know if anyone's tracking us."
[Already on it, Daniel.]
He leaned back against the cold metal wall, his breath steadying. For now, they had escaped. But the encounter with Adrian had shaken him in ways he wasn't ready to admit.
And somewhere deep inside, a gnawing fear remained at the back of his mind.
This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.
