Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The Edge of Survival
I woke to the faint hum of the Dungeon. The cold stone beneath me was hard and unrelenting, its chill wrapping around me like a second skin. My body ached all over, heavy and sluggish, like I'd been wrung dry. I tried to move, but the stiffness in my limbs and the dull pain in my arm made every motion feel like climbing a mountain.
I opened my eyes slowly, the faint blue light of the Dungeon crystals blurring into view. Their glow flickered across the chamber walls, illuminating the jagged stone and casting shifting shadows. The air was damp and cold, with an unnatural stillness that made my skin crawl.
I struggled to sit up, bracing myself against the wall. My arm throbbed, and I glanced down to see my sleeve torn and stained. The marks left by the Scavenger Beast's claws still tingled, but the worst of the discomfort had faded into something manageable.
Then my eyes drifted to the place where the beast had fallen, and I froze.
---
The body was gone.
Where the Scavenger Beast had collapsed, there was now only a faint crackle of blue sparks. They danced in the air, flickering like tiny fireflies before vanishing into the shadows. It was mesmerizing, almost beautiful, but it made no sense.
Monsters didn't just disappear. The stories I'd heard about Dungeons were full of tales of adventurers dragging back corpses to prove their kills, but there was nothing left of the beast. No body. No blood. Only those strange, flickering sparks.
And then I saw it.
---
Lying in the center of the fading sparks was something small and glowing.
A crystal, no larger than my palm, sat nestled in the stone. Its surface shimmered with a soft, golden light that pulsed faintly, casting warm ripples of illumination across the dark chamber. Unlike the cold blue crystals embedded in the walls, this one felt alive, its glow inviting and steady.
I stared at it, my mind spinning with questions. What was it? Why was it here? The beast had disappeared, leaving this behind, but I didn't understand how or why.
Despite the confusion swirling in my head, I felt an irresistible pull toward the crystal. Its glow seemed to reach out to me, cutting through the tension in the air and drawing me in.
Dragging myself closer was agonizing. My body protested every inch of movement, and my legs wobbled beneath me as I crawled across the rough stone floor. But I couldn't stop. I had to know what this was.
When I finally reached it, I hesitated. The crystal's glow seemed to brighten as I hovered over it, its light spilling across my hands. My fingers trembled, my instincts screaming at me to be cautious.
But I had already come this far. Whatever this was, it had to mean something.
Taking a deep breath, I reached out and picked it up.
---
The moment my fingers closed around the crystal, warmth spread through me. It started in my palm and coursed through my body, washing over me like sunlight breaking through clouds.
The hum that had filled the Dungeon since I'd entered surged, vibrating through the air and into my chest. The crystal's light grew brighter, spilling golden waves across the chamber, filling every corner with a soft, radiant glow.
I gasped as energy pulsed through me, lifting the heaviness from my limbs and steadying my breath. The dull ache in my arm faded into the background, no longer sharp but distant and manageable.
For a moment, it felt like the Dungeon itself had come alive, its presence pressing against me in a way I couldn't explain. The warmth wasn't just physical—it was deeper, resonating in a way that felt like it was touching something beyond my body.
The crystal pulsed faster, the light intensifying, until it reached a blinding crescendo.
And then, just as quickly as it had started, it stopped.
---
The light dimmed, retreating to a soft, steady glow in my hand. The hum faded into the background, no longer overwhelming but still faintly present, like the quiet echo of a heartbeat.
I slumped back against the wall, clutching the crystal tightly as I tried to steady my breathing. My mind raced with questions, but the exhaustion pressing down on me made it hard to think.
Whatever this crystal was, it had done something to me. I could feel it in the warmth that still lingered in my chest, in the way my strength had returned just enough to keep me upright.
I forced myself to my feet, using the wall for support. The room felt quieter now, the oppressive weight of the Dungeon lifting slightly, though a faint tension still hung in the air.
The golden glow of the crystal lit the path ahead, faint but steady, guiding me toward the chamber's exit.
Whatever this crystal was, I knew it wasn't ordinary. It had come from the Scavenger Beast—from the blue sparks that had replaced its body.
I didn't know why, but I had a feeling this was just the beginning.
