"The Silent Ascension"

Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Phantom Reflex

The air was thick with tension, the kind that coiled around the body like invisible chains, suffocating and inescapable. The glow from the crystal at my waist pulsed steadily, its rhythmic light the only thing keeping me grounded in the overwhelming darkness of the Dungeon. My fingers were slick with sweat, the hilt of my knife threatening to slip from my grasp as I braced myself for what was coming.

Two of them.

The second anomaly had stepped forward, its golden eyes boring into me, dissecting me, measuring my worth. Unlike the first, which writhed and lunged with a primal hunger, this one was eerily still, its elongated limbs poised in deliberate control. It was studying me, calculating the precise moment to strike.

I swallowed hard, forcing my body to remain still, to ignore the tremors of exhaustion and blood loss weighing down my limbs. The system's message still hovered in my mind, a glaring warning painted across my thoughts.

[Survival Mode Activated]Time Limit: 10 Minutes.Survive.

Ten minutes. Ten minutes against two creatures that had already pushed me past my limits. It might as well have said an eternity.

The first anomaly recovered quickly from its injuries, its form still flickering, unstable. It moved first, dashing forward in a blur, its claws slicing through the space where my head had been a second before. I threw myself to the side, my back hitting the cold stone wall of the chamber as I gasped for breath. My chest ached, my ribs protesting violently with every movement. I couldn't take many more hits like that.

The second anomaly didn't move immediately. It merely watched, like a predator letting its pack wear down the prey before going in for the kill. The realization sent a chill down my spine. These things weren't just mindless monsters. They were intelligent. They were working together.

I gritted my teeth, my grip tightening on the knife. I couldn't just dodge and react. I had to be proactive. I had to fight like my life depended on it—because it did.

With a deep breath, I lunged at the first anomaly, ignoring the screaming protests from my body. My knife slashed upward, catching it just beneath what I assumed to be its ribcage. The moment the blade connected, resistance met my strike—like cutting through wet stone rather than flesh. Sparks danced in the dim light, and the creature let out an enraged screech. But I had drawn blood. Or something close to it.

A dark, viscous substance oozed from the wound, evaporating into thin air before it could hit the ground. The anomaly staggered, its form flickering more violently. It was unstable.

The second one finally moved.

A blur of motion. A rush of air. Pain exploded in my side as its elongated arm caught me mid-movement, sending me sprawling across the chamber floor. My vision swam, a coppery taste filling my mouth as I struggled to breathe.

[Health Critically Low]

My fingers twitched against the stone, desperate to hold onto my weapon, but the impact had rattled me more than I had anticipated. Through blurred vision, I saw the two anomalies closing in, their golden eyes locked onto me, unblinking, unrelenting.

I couldn't last ten minutes. Not like this.

Desperation clawed at my throat. I needed something—anything. My gaze flicked to the glowing crystal at my waist. The warmth of it pulsed against my skin, as if responding to my thoughts, to my fear.

And then it spoke.

[Emergency Override: Skill Activation Pending]

A wave of heat rushed through my body, overpowering the pain, dulling the edges of my agony with something raw and potent. Energy surged through my veins, something unfamiliar yet eerily natural. My fingers tightened around my weapon, my body moving before my mind could fully process the change.

The anomalies lunged in unison, a coordinated strike meant to end me. But I was faster this time. My body twisted, reacting instinctively, the knife flashing through the air with precise force. I ducked beneath one claw, sidestepped another, and then drove my blade deep into the first anomaly's chest.

A deafening shriek echoed through the chamber. Its body convulsed, its golden eyes flickering wildly as its form began to disintegrate into blue smoke. The second anomaly faltered for a fraction of a second, its control momentarily disrupted.

I didn't waste the opportunity.

Every muscle in my body screamed in protest as I pushed forward, my knife slashing through the remaining anomaly's shoulder. The blade dug deep, deeper than before, the energy surging through me making my movements sharper, stronger. The creature recoiled, its molten gaze flashing with something I couldn't place—surprise, maybe. Or recognition.

I didn't stop. I couldn't.

I drove the knife up again, striking true. The second anomaly let out a guttural screech, its limbs flailing as its body began to dissolve into the same blue smoke as the first. It writhed, fighting against the inevitable, but it was over.

Both were gone.

The chamber was silent once more, save for the heavy sound of my breathing. My body trembled, the aftershocks of the fight settling in. The glow from my crystal dimmed slightly, the energy within it retracting, leaving behind an emptiness that made my knees weak.

The system message blinked in my vision.

[Survival Mode Complete][Time Remaining: 01:27]

I had made it. I had survived.

I collapsed to my knees, the weight of everything crashing over me all at once. My body was wrecked, my wounds raw and bleeding, but I was alive. And the system… it had done something. It had given me a skill, a power beyond what I had before. A chance.

As I struggled to steady my breathing, another notification flickered.

[Anomaly Neutralized: Data Retrieved][New Skill Acquired: Phantom Reflex][Adaptive Combat Data Stored]

I frowned, exhaustion making it difficult to focus. Data? The system had… stored something from the fight. But what did that mean?

I looked down at the crystal, its glow faint but steady, as if waiting for me to ask the question.

And for the first time, I wondered if I was truly in control of what was happening to me—or if I was just another piece in something far bigger.

But I had no time for answers now.

I needed to get out of here before something worse found me.

And I had a feeling something much worse was coming.
