"The Silent Ascension"

Chapter 13: Chapter 13: The Beast in the Shadows

The glowing red eyes in the darkness bore into me, their intensity sending a shiver down my spine. I gripped my knife tightly, my knuckles white with strain as my pulse thundered in my ears. The air in the chamber was heavy and still, like the Dungeon itself was waiting to see what would happen next.

The creature emerged into the faint light of the blue crystals, and my stomach churned. It was massive, towering over me with a sinewy frame that seemed made of pure muscle. Its skin was black and leathery, stretched tight over its hulking body, and its long claws scraped against the stone floor with every deliberate step.

Its glowing red eyes locked onto mine, and I felt like prey caught in the gaze of a predator far above my level.

The golden crystal at my waist pulsed urgently, its hum growing louder, but I couldn't focus on it. My attention was locked on the beast in front of me, its movements slow and methodical as it circled me like a wolf cornering its meal.

I swallowed hard, forcing myself to take a step back. My knife felt woefully inadequate against something this large, but it was all I had.

"Alright," I muttered, more to myself than anything. "You've faced worse. You can do this."

The creature tilted its head slightly, almost as if it understood me. Then, without warning, it lunged.

---

The beast moved faster than anything I'd seen before, a blur of motion that made the Scavenger Beast feel like a clumsy child in comparison. I barely managed to throw myself to the side as its claws raked through the air where I'd been standing.

I hit the ground hard, the impact jarring my injured shoulder and sending a spike of pain through my body. My knife skittered across the stone floor, just out of reach.

The creature let out a low growl, turning toward me as it stalked closer. Its movements were measured, its glowing eyes unblinking as it closed the distance between us.

I scrambled to my feet, my heart pounding as I dove for the knife. My fingers wrapped around the handle just as the beast lunged again, its claws slicing through the air inches from my back.

I spun around, slashing out with the knife in desperation. The blade caught the beast's side, leaving a shallow cut that oozed dark, tar-like blood.

The creature roared, its deep voice reverberating through the chamber, and I stumbled back, raising the knife defensively.

---

The fight became a deadly dance. The beast lunged and swiped, each attack a blur of claws and raw power, and I dodged and countered as best as I could. My movements were clumsy and desperate, the result of pure adrenaline rather than skill.

I managed to land a few more hits, the blade sinking into its flesh and leaving trails of dark blood across the stone floor. But it wasn't enough. The creature barely seemed to notice the wounds, its attacks relentless and unyielding.

My stamina was running out. Every dodge left me slower, every swing of the knife felt heavier. The golden crystal at my waist pulsed faintly, its hum resonating through my chest, but I didn't know how to make it help me.

The beast lunged again, and I wasn't fast enough.

Its claws raked across my arm, tearing through fabric and skin, and I cried out as pain erupted in my shoulder. Blood dripped down my arm, warm and sticky, but I didn't have time to stop and assess the damage. The beast was already preparing for its next attack.

---

A notification flickered into view as I stumbled back, gasping for breath.

Skill: Focus Strike Ready

---

The words were a lifeline, a sliver of hope in an otherwise impossible situation. I tightened my grip on the knife, focusing on the faint glow of the blade as I activated the skill.

The creature charged, its claws raised for a killing blow, and I threw myself forward, driving the knife toward its chest. The blade glowed brighter as it sank into the beast's flesh, cutting deep and releasing a spray of dark blood.

The creature let out a deafening roar, its body convulsing as it staggered backward. I yanked the knife free and stumbled away, my chest heaving as I tried to steady myself.

The beast wasn't dead, but it was weakened. Its movements were slower now, less coordinated, and its glowing eyes flickered faintly as it let out a low, guttural growl.

I pressed a hand to my injured arm, grimacing as I felt the sticky warmth of blood beneath my fingers. I couldn't afford to drag this out. If I didn't finish it soon, I wouldn't have the strength to survive.

---

The beast lunged again, and I sidestepped its attack, using the last of my stamina to drive the knife into its side. The blade struck true, sinking deep, and the creature let out another roar as it collapsed to its knees.

For a moment, I thought it was over. The beast slumped forward, its body trembling, and the glow in its eyes began to fade.

But then the golden crystal at my waist pulsed violently, its hum growing louder and more urgent than ever before. A notification appeared in front of me, the text glowing brighter than anything I'd seen from the system so far.

---

[Warning: Anomaly Detected]

Threat Level Escalating…

Emergency Protocols Engaged.

---

I froze, my heart skipping a beat as the beast's body began to convulse violently. The glow in its eyes flared brighter than ever, and its wounds started to close before my very eyes.

"No," I whispered, stepping back in horror. "That's not possible…"

The creature let out an earth-shaking roar as it rose to its feet, its body swelling with newfound strength. The glow of the blue crystals in the chamber dimmed, as though the beast's presence was draining the energy from the very air around us.

I tightened my grip on the knife, my mind racing as I tried to think of a plan. But I knew, deep down, that I was out of options.

And then, just as the creature prepared to strike again, the golden crystal at my waist flared with blinding light, and everything went white.
