Chapter 122: The Closest is the Mystery
[Ongoing editing. Read Author's thoughts at the end]
The palace was eerily quiet that afternoon, the air thick with the kind of stillness that felt like the prelude to a storm. Argider wandered the halls aimlessly, her thoughts bouncing between Mira's recent lessons and the tangled chaos that seemed to trail her every step. She paused at the large bay windows overlooking the gardens, her mind drifting to tea—a soothing remedy for her many woes.
"Argider," a familiar voice cut through her musings.
She turned to see Callista standing a few feet away, her usual serene smile firmly in place. Clad in a flowing cream-colored gown that seemed to shimmer in the sunlight, she looked every bit the ethereal enigma she always had.
"Callista," Argider greeted, her tone a mix of surprise and suspicion.
"I was just about to have tea," Callista said, tilting her head slightly. "Would you care to join me?"
Argider blinked. It wasn't unusual for Callista to extend such invitations, but after the chaos Elira had stirred with her cryptic warnings, this simple offer felt oddly loaded.
"Sure," Argider said after a brief pause. "Tea sounds... nice."
The tea room Callista led her to was small and cozy, bathed in warm afternoon light. The table was already set with delicate porcelain cups and a steaming pot of herbal tea that smelled faintly of chamomile and lavender.
Argider sat down across from Callista, her eyes narrowing slightly as she watched the other woman pour tea with practiced grace. Mira's voice echoed in her mind: Watch for micro-expressions. Pay attention to tone and body language.
"So," Argider began, leaning back in her chair. "What's the occasion?"
Callista smiled, sliding a cup toward her. "Do I need a reason to spend time with my favorite ruler?"
Argider snorted. "Favorite, huh? I'm your only ruler."
"Semantics," Callista said, taking a sip of her tea. Her expression remained calm, but Argider noticed the subtle way her fingers tapped against the cup's handle. Nervousness?
She decided to test the waters. "You've been quiet lately. Anything on your mind?"
"Quietness is my nature," Callista replied smoothly. "But if you're fishing for gossip, I'm afraid I'll disappoint you."
Deflection, Argider noted. She leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand. "Come on, Callista. You can't fool me. Something's up."
Callista's gaze flickered for the briefest moment, her serene mask slipping just enough for Argider to catch a glimpse of something—what, she wasn't sure.
"You've grown sharper," Callista said, her tone carrying a hint of amusement. "I wonder who's been teaching you."
Argider grinned. "Oh, you know. Just a certain stoic scholar who thinks I'm a lost cause."
"Clearly, she's wrong," Callista said, her smile returning.
As the conversation meandered, Argider decided to push harder, testing the limits of her newfound skills.
"So," she said casually, "how's palace life treating you? No complaints?"
Callista raised an eyebrow. "Why would I complain? The palace is lovely, the company charming."
"Charming, huh?" Argider leaned closer, her tone teasing. "Does that include me?"
Callista chuckled softly, her fingers tracing the rim of her cup. "You, my dear, are endlessly entertaining."
Argider pretended to pout. "Just entertaining? Not dazzling? Not awe-inspiring?"
Callista's eyes sparkled with amusement. "If you insist, I can add 'dazzling' to the list."
Argider laughed, but her mind raced. Callista's lighthearted responses were as impenetrable as ever. If Mira's lessons had taught her anything, it was that Callista's unshakable composure was both her greatest strength and most infuriating trait.
Determined to uncover something—anything—Argider decided to employ one of Mira's strategies. She took a sip of tea, setting her cup down with deliberate slowness.
"You know," she said, her tone deceptively light, "it's funny how everyone in the palace seems to have their own agenda."
Callista tilted her head, her expression unreadable. "Is that so?"
"Absolutely," Argider continued. "Some are after power, some are after influence... and some, well, some are just mysteries."
Callista's lips curved into a faint smile. "And which category do I fall into?"
"The last one," Argider said, holding her gaze. "You're a mystery wrapped in silk and sunshine."
For a fleeting moment, something flickered in Callista's eyes—amusement, perhaps, or maybe something deeper. "A poetic observation. But mysteries, by their nature, are meant to remain unsolved."
Argider leaned back, crossing her arms. "That sounds like something a mysterious person would say."
Callista laughed softly. "Perhaps."
As the afternoon wore on, the conversation turned more personal. Argider found herself relaxing despite her earlier determination to analyze Callista.
"Do you ever get tired of all this?" she asked, gesturing vaguely at the ornate room around them. "The politics, the expectations, the endless games?"
Callista's smile faded slightly. "Of course. But what choice do we have? We play the roles assigned to us."
Argider frowned. "That's... depressing."
"It's reality," Callista said simply. "But that doesn't mean we can't find joy where we can."
"Like tea with me?" Argider asked, grinning.
"Exactly," Callista said, her smile returning.
For a moment, Argider saw past the mask—saw the woman behind the serene facade. It was a rare glimpse, and it left her feeling both intrigued and oddly protective.
Argider leaned back in her chair, trying to maintain her casual demeanor as she sipped her tea. Callista sat across from her, a serene smile gracing her lips. But behind that smile, Argider could sense an almost imperceptible edge—a sharpness concealed beneath layers of grace.
"You're quite the mystery, Callista," Argider said, tilting her head playfully. "It's no wonder everyone in the palace is drawn to you."
Callista's smile didn't falter, but her eyes flickered, ever so briefly. "Mystery can be alluring, I suppose. But it's often better left unprobed."
Argider raised an eyebrow, setting her cup down. "Unprobed? That almost sounds like a challenge."
Callista's fingers tapped lightly against the porcelain of her cup, a deliberate rhythm that seemed to echo through the room. "Not a challenge," she said smoothly. "More of a caution. Some truths, once uncovered, cannot be unseen. And some questions, once asked, cannot be taken back."
The words hung in the air, their weight sinking into Argider's chest. She shifted slightly in her seat, feeling a bead of sweat form at her temple despite the room's cool air.
"I'm just curious, that's all," Argider said, her voice light but her confidence wavering.
Callista leaned forward slightly, her serene smile turning just a shade sharper. "Curiosity is a double-edged sword, my dear. It can lead to enlightenment—or destruction. The question is, which path do you seek?"
For a moment, Argider was speechless, caught in the intensity of Callista's gaze. It wasn't threatening, exactly, but it held an unspoken warning: Tread carefully.
She forced a laugh, waving a hand dismissively. "You make it sound so ominous."
Callista leaned back, her smile softening. "Perhaps because some things are."
Then, she tilted her head, a mischievous glint sparkling in her eyes as she leaned closer to Argider. The distance between them vanished like dew in the sun, and Argider froze, her cup of tea trembling slightly in her hand. Callista's voice dropped to a velvety tone, smooth and enticing.
"Argider," Callista purred, her lips curving into a tantalizing smile. "You've always been so… inquisitive. It's one of your charms, truly. But perhaps you'd find better pursuits than prying into my little secrets."
Argider blinked, her heart pounding loudly in her ears. "P-Pursuits? Like what?"
Callista's delicate fingers brushed against Argider's hand, making her jolt slightly. She tilted her head ever so slightly, her expression softening into something that could only be described as dangerously alluring.
"Oh, I don't know…" Callista mused, her gaze never leaving Argider's. "Perhaps we could focus on something more… mutually satisfying? Something that doesn't involve you dissecting my every word or thought?"
Argider gulped, her mind racing. Was she being… seduced? The air felt heavier, charged with a tension she wasn't quite prepared for. She laughed awkwardly, trying to regain her footing. "Uh, I don't think tea counts as mutually satisfying, Callista."
Callista chuckled, her laugh low and honeyed, sending a shiver down Argider's spine. "Oh, sweet Argider. Do you really think I invited you here just for tea?"
Her hand slid up Argider's arm in a way that was both comforting and electrifying. Argider felt her cheeks burn as she tried to maintain composure.
"L-Look," Argider stammered, pulling back slightly but not enough to escape. "If this is your way of getting me to stop, I'll admit—it's effective. But… I'm still curious."
Callista smirked knowingly, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Curiosity can be so dangerous, my dear emperor. Are you certain you want to keep tempting fate?"
Her eyes gleamed with dangerous amusement as she leaned in, her lips brushing against Argider's in a featherlight kiss. It was soft, intoxicating, and over far too quickly. Argider barely had time to process the warmth before Callista pulled back, her smirk sharper than a blade.
"Consider that a warning, darling," Callista murmured, her voice dripping with playful menace. "Pry too much, and you might just lose yourself in the game."
Argider's heart thundered in her chest, her face burning as she stammered incoherently. Callista simply chuckled, her retreating steps as graceful as a predator savoring its victory.
